I don't see desperation. I see them as turning up for a job they hate and getting it over with in a mechanical and businesslike manner. But (to me, anyway) they seem in charge, somehow. But I agree the choreography is amazing! I'm pretty sure the choreographer is Bob Fosse. I love the details with the hands!

Whoa! How did I not know about this until today? This is amazing - it's like a hit to the face. The bored mannequin zombie feel to the dangers' moves- the blank look in their eyes - the way everyone moves together with pretended sensuality but more like machinery rather than people - and the way they all sing the song so so perfectly - the whole thing is mesmerising!

The only black woman was Paula Kelly. She played a lot of bit roles in black films from the 70s. She is a very recognizable face from black cinema in the late 60s and 70s.

RIP the incomparable Chita Rivera-a Fosse muse, a legend, a star, a triple-threat, an inspiration and a groundbreaker. Never before, never hence.

I love seeing dancers of different ages. I don't think I've ever seen pro dancers beyond 30 years old on TV

I love how they're all standing like their feet hurt after a night of dancing with paying customers.

A superb rendition of this song. By cutting the choreography to a minimum the women are showing how bored but desperate they are to make a little money. You can actually smell the smoke, sadness and despair.

Paula Kelly's dancing in this film has the power of a locomotive. She's so great. Pairing her with Chita Rivera is insanely brilliant.

For as famous a scene as this is, it’s still so underrated! Absolute genius - everything about it!

One of the most cinematic and influential choreographers ever, Mr. Bob Fosse. He didn't let a single frame go to waste, what an artist, and what a performance from the ladies of the Fandango Ballroom.

This conveys so much without saying anything. Having to perform for a guy but not enjoying it at all.

I love me some Chita BUT you simply can't take your eyes off Paula Kelly. This whole number your attention immediately goes directly to her. She was absolutely mesmerizing. What an amazing talent. She will be missed. RIP!💔😪

She's just mesmerizing!

The greatest of all Fosse dance numbers with the greatest dancers. This is the heaviest of heavy hitters. The Paula Kelly body roll is worth the price of admission.

The one-eyed blink at 03:16 is quite impressive and pretty cool looking, funny even. This whole dance sequence is hypnotic yet so jarring, so seamless and refined yet so rough and mechanized, so sensual yet so harsh. Bodies commodified.

Who is the Black woman? That gold on her skin is CRAZY 😍

i love the contrast between this and 'there's got to be something better than this' where this is mechanical and bored (but incredible) whereas in the other number their movements are free and full and enthusiastic at even the idea of freedom, i just find it so interesting and such good storytelling even through dance moves

Chita Riveria (RIP) and Paula Kelly just kill this number. The overall choreography is fire!

Bob Fosse was an absolute genius. His work and creativity is impeccable and unparalleled. You can still see his influence in both musical theater and even popular music and music videos to this day. Even if people don't know where the influence comes from, those of us familiar with his work will always recognize it.

4/2024 Just now seeing this. I love how they are all leaning against the bar in different ways. This was lovely. RIP Chita Rivera and Paula Kelly and anyone else.

Fell in love with Paula Kelly, Bob Fosse and Shirley McLaine all at once with this movie.

Everything about this is perfection….so much said and set up without actually saying it through the movements and costumes and holy crap Paula Kelly is captivating!

I watched this musical live last weekend and it was absolutely FANTASTIC!

They not doing it like this anymore 😭. 10s across the board

This is brilliantly played and Fosse was brilliant. The women are like snakes - menacing and dangerous.

I’ve known this song for most of my life but have never seen this routine until today!! How is this possible. What an extraordinary piece of choreography. I just have to watch this film.

I only knew of it because of Grounded for Life, I feel ashamed lol. The director behind this, Bob Fosse, also did All That Jazz and he's iconic.

I’m 50 (but think I’m 25). Lol! I remember when I was about seven or eight years old, and my Nana had one of those huge record player/radio things and she taught me every song to every musical up until about that point. The hills are alive with the sound of nothing but a big spender…

Genius, this never gets old!

Fosse claimed he got the idea for this seeing the salesgirls at the makeup counter at Bloomingdales. They tried to be charming while their feet were killing them

This is the moment that Made Fossee a god in the dance world. I could watch this repeatedly and still find new things I missed. All dancers could take notes from this. It's a moment of perfection.

I have always wanted to hear this song and see the choreography here. Just brilliant. Can't go wrong with Fosse

I love Bob Fosse. I've always loved musicals, performed in many myself, but this scene has always been one of my favorites.

I won a part in this musical when I was living in west palm beach. They were going to put it on at a theater in Fort Lauderdale. God is good 🙏

Hahahahha I remember my highschool days when my teacher entered me to our school pageant for grades purpose and I end up doing my talent as this song. It was shocking for I was the only bold enough to do a semi exotic talent while the other contestant was so wholesome with doing poems, sing, story telling on stage 😂 I blamed my cousin who put me into it good thing I got the 1st place though 😂 What a weird experience 🤭

When I was 7 yrs old my sisters and I used to listen to this soundtrack nonstop and sing this song at the top of our lungs. 😅

We did a dance class with Arlene Phillips in the 70’s,when we were all about 8 or 9 years old,and she choreographed this number for us all😅,the parents watching at the end😮

I try not to be an elitest but I see so many different takes of this and they rarely get that bored, tired, and just olqin done but desperate for the pay aspect. Its usually very seductive and more energetic for the comedy.
