Hex Pegs: Drillable Tent & Canopy Stakes

Choosing the right tent or canopy stake can make the difference between a cozy tent or a picnic disaster in the event of rain or wind. Stakes come in many varieties of styles and materials, but stakes are often made of aluminum, steel, plastic, or titanium.
Most tents and canopies come with metal stakes that are usually thin and flimsy out of the box. If they are the kind that looks like a piece of thick round wire with a bend at the top, it is sure to get lost or bent in no time.
If your campsite ground is hard clay, these cheap stakes will not be strong enough to sink in. You are likely to bend or break them, trying to use them. Conversely, if you are in soft dirt or a sandy area, the basic metal stake will pull right out of the ground with little effort.

They are sold in pack sizes of 4, 10, and 15 stakes for each style (Hook or Flat Tops). Each pack will include a Hex Socket and a Black Velvet Carrying Bag.
An 18V cordless drill is recommended for anchoring your stakes. A hammer drill function is preferable for harder rocky ground types. On ground types that are as hard as rock and you may still struggle to get the Hex Pegs into the ground using a hammer drill. For these situations, you can use a 5/16" by 8" long masonry drill bit to put a pilot hole in the ground first, then drill the Hex Pegs into the pilot hole.
The Hex Pegs Hook Top can secure gazebos (shelters), awnings, tents, annexes, trampolines, dog leads, ladders, and anything with a 7/16" or larger opening, eyelet, or "O" ring.
The Hex Peg Flat Top has been designed for applications when the Hook Top is not required or not necessary for any attachment purposes. Such applications may include anchoring down groundsheets, mobile clotheslines, the base of tents, annexes, outdoor furniture, or anything else with a /16" or larger opening, eyelet, or "O" ring.

We use something similar to secure inflatables for our party rental business. I call them spiral stakes. I have a short video. They have 475 lbs of holding power. We do ask for customer's to know where their underground utilities, gas, electric, water, sprinklers are at since theyre 16" long. We also use 18"-24" 5/8" thick J stakes. Celina tents has a series of videos where they show how to stake down tents, these are commercial tents. Their tests showed that staking straight down has more strength than staking at an angle.

They look like a no brainer for clay soil but how do the Hex Pegs work in different kinds of soil? Sandy soil for instance?
Wow those are beefy! BTW keep your eyes open for irrigation lines (6-12 inches deep) if you are near civilization.

I am completely new to using a drill. I am wondering how to use the drill--since I won't be using a drill bit, what and how do I attach what I need onto the drill? sorry for such a basic question. Could use your help to explain this to me. thanks

You would need to know the size of the hex head on the stakes, then get a socket (for your ratchet or drill) that's the same size.
What is your best advice on how to anchor or tie down a canopy in loose sand? ? Over night beach camping

Any standard drill should be fine,unless it’s really rocky.

@@namita9031 it’s a socket, and it comes with the hex pegs, but maybe not any of the knock offs. If it doesn’t come with whatever you buy, you could just get a standard socket and an adapter at Home Depot for a couple bucks.
how do they compare to the ground grabbers?

I have not used those because their plastic, and here in Texas and in Colorado, I can’t see them actually working in the hard ground.

@@marioroberson3271 there are several things to consider. How big and heavy the gazebo is How strong is the wind? How hard is the ground that your drilling into How deep did you drill them into How many of them are you using? How much wind are we talking about? All of these items would be taken into consideration when you do something like gazebo. For the most part, it’s probably hold it down for every day use and light general wind as long as it wasn’t too big and you didn’t have too few mounts. Try looking for ground augurs instead something like this.amzn.to/42E5bJi please have a much larger blade across the bottom, which will hold quite a bit more weight but, it’s still depends on what grounds you’re screwing it into.
