"Hevonniemi" is partly a Natura 2000 protected area in the north of Savonlinna, a small town in Eastern Finland, in the lake district of Saimaa. With the exception of some very few cottages it is mostly uninhabited and therefore difficult to access.
Though it has been actively exploited by forestry in the past, it has recovered a significant aspect of the wild. Unfortunately the area is crossed by electric high tension wires which are quite spoiling its beautiful landscapes.
« I visited there for the very first time in 1999 on a three days canoe tour. I had with me a Nikon FE2, 3 photographic lenses and a few rolls of Fuji films. It was the end of September and I would enjoy sunny weather all along my trip. For three days I saw nobody. However I observed from far some fishing boats and a barge for wood transport crossing the "Matari" strait. Hevonniemi, the "Horse Cape", is a very peaceful and mysterious place. I have returned there several times... It's not complicated because it's next to the place I live ».
