I own 10 guitars ( you need different tunings, different gauges, diff types of strings ) because of my little home studio. And each neck size, neck thickness, how the frets are leveled, fret curvature/radius, shape, balance etc all of these are diff on each guitar. Comes down to ergonomics, hand size etc but yeah even Hetfield knows there’s “something about that guitar” that’s more comfortable for down picking, alt picking etc For example an esp or jackson neck is so much more thin on the back and the fret wires are more flat, while the strat has a higher radius (curvature). This makes the strings fret out (and stop ringing) when you bend them if you don’t have a medium to high action. While the flatter radius guitar can do that on lower actions. Cheers fellow tone seekers

It's just a half-step down, in this case it's Eb Standard. They've been tuning the guitars that way in live performances for every song since the 90's, I believe. This also includes songs that already had lower tunings to begin with like Sad But True, All Nightmare Long, and anything off St. Anger. If I remember correctly, the reason for it is for James to not strain himself on vocals night after night and also because.. lower tunings are heavier lol

The weight of the body and where the neck naturally sits can have a huge outcome on the way the song is played. Totally understandable. Ask Lars to put his drums a little further apart or closer to each other or tilted at another angle and see if he doesn't blame his tech for messing up.....
