There is a chapter that describes in detail Heron's theatre, and how we created the model for it. “Heron of Alexandria’s ‘Toy Theatre’ Automaton: Reality, Allusion, and Illusion”, in Performance and Analogue Technology: Interfaces and Intermedialities, ed. K. Reilly, (Palgrave MacMillan), 15-39.

Professor Atelbauers: I am showing this to my children who are learning about Heron. They are in elementary school and would like to know if you made this with a computer program, and if so which program. Thank you for sharing this.

That took a lot of dedicated work to build! Do you have a weblink for more info about this? I found your video while searching for Heron's play, described in Wikipedia as follows: Hero also invented many mechanisms for the Greek theater, including an entirely mechanical play almost ten minutes in length, powered by a binary-like system of ropes, knots, and simple machines operated by a rotating cylindrical cogwheel. The sound of thunder was produced by the mechanically-timed dropping of metal balls onto a hidden drum.

***** Thanks, Janis! But in fact, this is a little overkill for me... I was interested to see the script of the play, so that one could present it as originally intended: read the text and play (the second part of) your video clip to illustrate it, pausing it every so often to allow the narrator to catch up. Now I’ll have to really go all the way and extract that script from the PDF I guess-anyway, I asked for it :D

***** Strange! You must have performed the play for an audience at least once, I thought... but don't worry, I'll figure it out, at least it's good to know that no such script is existing yet. I signed up as "independent researcher" to get your file :)

***** Oh, it seems I really have to read your document. I had the impression that the automaton (real or digital) could be like the video part of a presentation, and a narrator would read the story. At least, just from watching the automaton I have no idea what it's about. Can the automaton's movement be paused, once it's started? That would then be a bit like a slideshow presentation, with some moving pictures here and there. If the program can't be paused halfway, that would be a different story.

@Janis Atelbauers I would like to read that pdf document because I need to do a presentation and a model about this theater but when I click the link there stands that this isn't an restricted area

You need narrated explanations for what we’re looking at.
