Heroes in History: The Wardens

Ойындар

This one isn't my best one, honestly. But I gave it my best all the same. Talking about the Warden's is difficult because they're the definition of the generic knight. So I decided to discuss chivalry and the big orders that the Warden could have likely been based on.
I hope ya'll enjoy it.

As a fan of Superman I find it disheartening that so many people would discard chivalry (the romanticized version) and other "good ol' fashioned" values. Is it harder? Yes. But that should be a challenge to live up to, not a reason to discard it. Be a hero kids.

In order to maintain air-speed velocity, a swallow needs to beat its wings forty-three times every second. But what is the air-speed velocity of an unladen swallow? And does it matter if it’s an African or European swallow? These are vital questions that need to be resolved. To begin with, I needed basic kinematic data on African and European swallow species. left: South African Swallow right: European Swallow Although 47 of the 74 worldwide swallow species are found in Africa,1 only two species are named after the continent: the West African Swallow (Hirundo domicella) and the South African Swallow (Hirundo spilodera), also known as the South African Cave Swallow. Since the range of the South African Swallow extends only as far north as Zaire,2 I felt fairly confident that this was the non-migratory African species referred to in previous discussions of the comparative and cooperative weight-bearing capabilities of African and European swallows.3 Kinematic data for both African species was difficult to find, but the Barn or European Swallow (Hirundo rustica) has been studied intensively, and kinematic data for that species was readily available. It’s a simple question of weight ratios A 54-year survey of 26,285 European Swallows captured and released by the Avian Demography Unit of the University of Capetown finds that the average adult European swallow has a wing length of 12.2 cm and a body mass of 20.3 grams.4 Because wing beat frequency and wing amplitude both scale with body mass,5and flight kinematic data is available for at least 22 other bird species,6 it should be possible to estimate the frequency (f ) and amplitude (A) of the European Swallow by a comparison with similar species. With those two numbers, it will be possible to estimate airspeed (U). In order to maintain airspeed velocity, a swallow needs to beat its wings forty-three times every second, right? Actually, wrong. By comparing the European Swallow with bird species of similar body mass, we can estimate that the swallow beats its wings 18 times a second with an amplitude of 18 cm: SpeciesBody massFrequencyAmplitudeZebra Finch13 g27 Hz11 cmEuropean Swallow20 g≈ 18 Hz?≈ 18 cm?Downy Woodpecker27 g14 Hz29 cmBudgerigar34 g14 Hz15 cm Note that even the tiny Zebra Finch flaps its wings no more than 27 times a second while cruising. If we ignore body mass and look only at bird species with a similar wingspan, we can estimate an average frequency of 14 beats per second and an amplitude of 23 cm: SpeciesWingspanFrequencyAmplitudeBudgerigar27 cm14 Hz15 cmEuropean Swallow≈ 28-30 cm≈ 14 Hz?≈ 23 cm?Downy Woodpecker31 cm14 Hz29 cmEuropean Starling35 cm14 Hz26 cm By averaging all 6 values, we can estimate that an average European Swallow flies at cruising speed with a frequency of roughly 15 beats per second, and an amplitude of roughly 22 cm. Skip a bit, Brother Last month’s article on The Strouhal Number in Cruising Flight showed how simplified flight waveforms that graph amplitude versus wavelength can be useful for visualizing the Strouhal ratio (fA/U), a dimensionless parameter that tends to fall in the range of 0.2-0.4 during efficient cruising flight. For a European Swallow flying with our estimated wingbeat amplitude of 24 cm, the predicted pattern of cruising flight ranges from a Strouhal number (St) of 0.2: ... to a less efficient 0.4: If the first diagram (St = 0.2) is accurate, then the cruising speed of the European Swallow would be roughly 16 meters per second (15 beats per second * 1.1 meters per beat). If the second diagram (St = 0.4) is accurate, then the cruising speed of the European Swallow would be closer to 8 meters per second (15 beats per second * 0.55 meters per beat). If we settle on an intermediate Strouhal value of 0.3: We can estimate the airspeed of the European Swallow to be roughly 11 meters per second (15 beats per second * 0.73 meters per beat). Three shall be the number thou shalt count Airspeed can also be predicted using a published formula. By inverting this midpoint Strouhal ratio of 0.3 (fA/U ≈ 0.3), Graham K. Taylor et al. show that as a rule of thumb, the speed of a flying animal is roughly 3 times frequency times amplitude (U ≈ 3fA).5 We now need only plug in the numbers: U ≈ 3fA f ≈ 15 (beats per second) A ≈ 0.22 (meters per beat) U ≈ 3*15*0.22 ≈ 9.9 ... to estimate that the airspeed velocity of an unladen European Swallow is 10 meters per second. Oh, yeah, I agree with that With some further study, it became clear that these estimates are accurate, though perhaps coincidental. An actual study of two European Swallows flying in a low-turbulence wind tunnel in Lund, Sweden, shows that swallows flap their wings much slower than my estimate, at only 7-9 beats per second: “Compared with other species of similar size, the swallow has quite low wingbeat frequency and relatively long wings.” 7 The maximum speed the birds could maintain was 13-14 meters per second, and although the Lund study does not discuss cruising flight in particular, the most efficient flapping (7 beats per second) occurred at an airspeed in the range of 8-11 meters per second, with an amplitude of 90-100° (17-19 cm). And there was much rejoicing Averaging the above numbers and plugging them in to the Strouhal equation for cruising flight (fA/U = 7 beats per second * 0.18 meters per beat / 9.5 meters per second) yields a Strouhal number of roughly 0.13: ... indicating a surprisingly efficient flight pattern falling well below the expected range of 0.2-0.4. Although a definitive answer would of course require further measurements, published species-wide averages of wing length and body mass, initial Strouhal estimates based on those averages and cross-species comparisons, the Lund wind tunnel study of birds flying at a range of speeds, and revised Strouhal numbers based on that study all lead me to estimate that the average cruising airspeed velocity of an unladen European Swallow is roughly 11 meters per second, or 24 miles an hour.

The Knight Captains wear helmets that hospitallers themselves wore. Since the Knights mainly speak in Latin, other countries like France, Spain and Italy were mixed together during the Great Cataclysm and so the dominant language became Latin and not German. Also, I wonder what happened to England. Because Highlander exists and he is obviously Scottish, but what happened to the English Knights? Were they wiped out or assimilated to the Vikings or did they assimilate with the Knights?

@@kyle4563. We don't really know what happened to England, though it's possible that, like Italy or France, the landmass got merged into Heathmoor during the Cataclysm; However, it's also likely that, like Japan itself, England sunk below the waves of the ocean during the Cataclysm. I was actually thinking up a pseudo faction in For Honor based on 18th-19th century England called Britannia, which is an obvious reference to England's name during the rule of the Western Roman Empire; The idea was that, while England survived the Cataclysm, it didn't exactly survive entirely intact, and the country was broken as a result both physically and politically. In fact, it was so broken that the government collapsed and the economy went into a nuclear meltdown, which caused further damage for centuries; This ended up pushing late 18th-early 19th century England back about 200 years technologically speaking in some places, though others went into an early form of Steampunk. It wasn't until around 120 years before the events of For Honor's campaign that the country was able to reunite as a full country after centuries of lawlessness and chaos when a new king and queen were able to take the throne through brute force in a civil war that lasted just over 20 years; Afterwards, the country was reformed, and the people could finally start to rebuild with some form of safety. Recognizing just how little of England was left after everything (Seriously, most of the country was physically split apart or sunken), the new monarchy renamed the country as Britannia after finding some of the ancient Roman maps in some dusty books while exploring the ruins near the Thames Bay during the war; (The post-Cataclysm evolution of the River Thames.) For the next few decades, Britannia started building up their military and naval forces as they knew they couldn't just stay on their ancestral island, but also knew that they were likely not the only ones to survive the Cataclysm. At the same time, though, the country as a whole went into partial Steampunk, and started to get into heavy industry; They also started to rebuild some of the cities and villages they lost during the Cataclysm. Many decades later after the fall of Apollyon in Heathmoor, Britannia sent out spies and scouts to get a lay of the continent and figure out what they were dealing with; However, during the process of exploring Heathmoor, the then current Britannian king and queen started to become disillusioned with the three factions constantly fighting each other, but didn't want to get involved just yet, so they refused to make their presence known. Many years later during the war between Horkos and Chimera, the Britannian people as a whole started to see the factions fighting against each other in Heathmoor as insubordinate children in need of discipline and new leadership, and this eventually included the monarchy. After the Medjay came to Heathmoor from the ruins of Egypt, Britannia saw their chance to invade the continent, "teach" the people they see as children, and "discipline" them; In other words, time to take over the continent, and crush the factions. Britannia also did this because they feared that the factions would eventually also have their own navy to counter their navy, so the reasons were actually twofold. As a faction, Britannia's units all use different weapons and armor, and have different personalities to go along with them, though this has caused the factions to unite as one much like what happened with Apollyon; The four factions now have a common enemy to unite against, though the connection is weak in some places, and some don't even see the threat of Britannia as a country, which has led to more than a few mistakes in all sorts of ways.

Don’t get me wrong, I definitely believe the Warden is a religious warrior, I believe every Warden does believe in god and follow the teachings of the bible HOWEVER, I feel like the Wardens are also the type of people that would throw away those religious ideals and teachings for something greater, something that they feel would be more important than a higher being they only BELIEVE exists, not entirely KNOW exists, and that is of course, protecting anyone and everyone they can Like I said, they definitely believe in God and follow the teachings of the bible, but if a priest were to tell them to slaughter a family of Vikings for no reason, I feel like the Warden would definitely say no, they value peace, prosperity and equality above everything else, even their faith in God The Warden is a noble warrior, who cares for one thing, and one thing only: their people, and that’s why only a few may join their order, it’s more than just an oath to God, it’s an oath to all people above all else Why does the Warden use a longsword? Surely a broadsword would be easier to use, as shown by the Black Prior, and it would allow for them to use a shield, but that’s missing the point A Warden has a responsibility to protect all people, a major weight to be put on anyone, and so if you can’t handle that weight, that responsibility, then you aren’t fit to be a Warden

These charges were very hard to believe at the time because of two reasons: 1.) The King owed a large amount of money to the Templars, so making them sound evil might get him out of it and he needed a good excuse to get rid of them. 2.) Many of these deeds he accused them of were the same things supposedly done by the Cathars, who the Templars had no contact with at the time. In short, while there were charges brought forward, we don’t know how much of it is true.

Well I wasn't used to playing Warden when I made this video, so I wasn't as familiar with the moveset and it's capabilities. But...with that said...if this is your comment, you must not be familiar with my work. I'm not a gamer as much as I am a historian.

Because, when I did this video, and many before it, I didn’t script it, so I was speaking by thought rather than reading. And sometimes my mouth works faster than my thoughts. It’s been a problem for me since I was a kid. I talk too fast for my own good. Sorry it’s such a distraction.
