Heroes and Villains - 18 Minute Pocket Symphony Mix Edition (The Beach Boys)

Комедия

FULL SMILE POCKET SYMPHONY MIX: • Video
DOWNLOADABLE MP3: drive.google.com/drive/folder...
This is what The Beach Boys' Heroes and Villains might have sounded like as the sprawling, playful musical comedy Brian Wilson wanted to make. Back are the casualties of Brian Wilson’s splice-and-dice editing process: Barnyard, You are my Sunshine, I'm in Great Shape, Vege-tables, Vega-table Fade, All Day, Bicycle Rider, Do You Like Worms. The result is obviously not historically accurate in any sense-- could you imagine The Beach Boys releasing a 19-minute single in 1967…? I GUESS ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE! (Note: KZread has removed some audio due to copyright claims, sorry!)

It may not be quite historically accurate, and you could probably edit out Vegetables & reduce the length of Do You Like Worms, but I think you've pretty accurately captured Heroes & Villains, which really is more of a sprawling sound-collage than one specific song. This works pretty darn well. It also helps show why both the SMiLE album and H&V single were so difficult to finish, essentially they are the same thing, distinct from but indistinct to each other; you can't easily separate a "single" out from the rest of the material.

@@drifter402 It's a sprawling sound collage because it has no actual structure. Heroes & Villains doesn't have any kind of verse/chorus and it doesn't have any real narrative, either. Working on Good Vibrations in sections was possible because there was a basic verse/chorus that could be played with; El Paso by Marty Robbins worked because it has a narrative structure. H&V has neither, it was just a bunch of sound snips that Brian was trying to arrange into a song. That's why it's more of a sound collage than an actual single.

The problem wasn’t that it was a ‘sprawling sound collage, not that there the lack of a narrative. There is structure: the Db verse, the Eb minor chorus, the Ab cantina bridge (if you want it) and the great acapella coda, Eb minor fade, The problem is that Brian lost confidence: re-recorded bits that may not have needed redoing, erasing others, recording variations of small motifs. it’s like his focus moved away from the bigger picture to obsessive minutiae. Maybe he tried to hard; maybe he couldn’t stop trying.

Honestly, that thought was the breakthrough I had putting it together. I think that Brian was under pressure to release SOMETHING from Smile, so he scavenged parts from all over it to make the Heroes and Villains single... which then meant it was impossible to finish smile because he'd "used" it up already. That's my theory anyway, so I rebuilt smile with that in mind... like making it into "one giant heroes and villains" ha.

H&V is first and foremost a narrative -- therefore you must assemble in the proper order: V1 V2 Chorus Bridge V3 Chorus V4. Bri removed Great Shape and Barnyard very early on -- simply because their lyrics don't obviously support H&V.
