Hero of "The Clutch & Grab Era" - Peter Forsberg top 20 plays

The time between the lockouts 1994 - 2004 was named the clutch and grab era, the era of "the trap". It´s dominator was Peter Forsberg, "The force", "Foppa", Peter the Great.

I got to see a bunch of his games here in Denver from the mid '90s on and feel VERY fortunate that I did. Just an unbelievable talent. Shooting, puck handling, offense, defense, strong as hell... he did it all, the total package. I worked in a huge sports bar and met LOTS of athletes over the years, as well as some tv celebrities and musicians. Meeting and having a beer with him was the only time I've ever been starstruck!!

If you're not old enough to have seen this guy play in the NHL you will never really quite understand his greatness and why he won two cups, two WC and two olympic gold medals and is considered one of the best at the game in history even though he had a fairly short NHL career(700 games) due to all the injurys he got being the best player in the world during this specific era and the abuse he took. As a Finn we love to hate Swedish players, at the same time we have the most respect for them and the combination of those two things make each clash in the hockey rink an event, some more memorable than others, still it is always a special moment. Peter Forsberg gave us Finnish hockey fans some bitter lessons, so we were afraid of him, hated him, loved him and marveled at him. Sundin loved to taunt, that was his style, Forsberg was gracious off the ice; after going through this crazy fucking hooking and cross-checking etc, and never complained about his injuries. My kudos to Foppa.

All accolades have already been written. I’ll just reiterate them, because watching Peter Forsberg videos still gives me goosebumps, borderline tears. He was an absolute ice hockey phenom! What most younger folks don’t get is that Forsberg’s career coincided with the worst spectator-friendly and hockey-unaesthetic era of clutch-and-grab. Technical forwards were much more easily shut down without drawing opposing team penalties. It’s of course all hypothetical, and you can’t compare eras, but I honestly believe that Peter Forsberg would have surpassed Wayne Gretzky’s points per game average had he played either before the 90’s and early 2000’s, or after 2005.

As a Avs fan I would love to see Forsberg play in today's game without all the holding and grabbing. He would lead the league in assists without a doubt. His combination of toughness and skill was unmatched.

Forsberg was good enough to be a 150 point player on a good team in the 80s. Agree he had a run of several years when he was the best player in the league

i was born in '86, and wasn't really introduced to hockey until i was 8 or 9, so this dude was my first hockey hero. i knew gretzky was the goat cuz thats what everyone was telling me, and i was a penguins fan then so i loved lemieux but i didn't get to see much of him before columbus got a team. i saw a lot of prime forsberg tho, and he was special.

I once asked Forsberg ( foolishly ) if he remembered that play when he charged the net with a guy draped all over him and he scored anyway. He just smiled at me. I immediately realized I was an idiot but he was still kind and asked back, " which one? ". Really nice guy and of course one of the best to play the game. By the way, the play I was recalling was 13:25 , just in case you were still wondering Pete.

Swedes like to bolster the credit to bolster their egos. When they win, they won despite the cheating, bad reffing, being injured hurt etc. Winning at all odds because they're just so great. When they lose, they were cheated, refs were paid, and, oh, by the way, they didn't want to win or weren't really trying anyway. That's a Swede in a nutshell almost down to the last one. Thankfully there's only 5 million of them.

Forsberg and Lemieux.... Two indestructible machines. Both players could single handledly physically go through everyone. Both battled injuries and conditions that caused both players to rise to even greater heights to finish the game, and they did so beautifully. I'm a wings and sabres fan. Anytime Peter or Mario was on the ice I held my breath. They could create something from nothing. Unreal f***** legends. Never will there be more dominant players in our game at all aspects of the game like these two. I would give anything to have another one like these two. Players that can fight, dominate a game, and stick up for teammates.

I could care less about high scoring games. The unfettered desire to turn the core of hockey into the NBA has taken the spark out of the NHL. Forsberg was not the only player with a brilliant mix of finesse and hardcore physicality. This era created Jagr, Leetch, Roenick, Messier, Konstantinov and at the same time ultimate finesse players like Larionov, Kozlov, even the Great One flourished. I miss that era, to say the least. Stellar video!

evilTaker90V2 But you need to compare the NHL of Mario's pre-(1st) retirement years and the league when he came back. Mario was disgusted with the league when he returned. Mario is up there with the exclusive group of Gordie, Orr and Gretzky. Mario would never have scored 199 pts in the "Clutch & Grab Era."
