Hermit Crab Care & Tank Setup

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

* I misspoke I meant dechlorinated, not distilled* 💗✌🏻
Hey guys! Long video and lots of info!! lol This is a video all about hermit crab care and hermit crab tank setup! I hope this video helps you, and I hope you enjoyed it! Thanks so much for watching and please see all the links below for more information that I couldn't include in this video! My hermit crab are in a glass tank (20 gallon long) AND I suggest when getting crabs you consider getting getting at least 2 together! just make sure they get along!
*Just to clarify I do not recommend or support the purchasing of hermit crabs, they have been taken from the wild and it breaks my heart. I do not support this. However I have had my crabs almost 9 years and want to teach their care for those who have crabs or have had them for a long time like me.*
THANKS FOR WATCHING!

🦀QUESTIONS & CONCERNS🦀
1.) CALCIUM SAND: I usually and have always used this, but am not currently. Some say it is bad, some say it is not. Better to be safe than sorry.
2.) all of the foliage(sticks, plants, ropes, houses) are all hermit crab safe.
4.) all of my shells are boiled
5.) my salt water is bottles and not from the chemical powder that is offered. I feel bottled is safer so the measurements are accurate.
6.) my substrate level is FINE (now 5-6in). I appreciate all comments and advice! But my crabs can hide and molt perfectly. They have recently molted and moved shells since his was filmed and so check my current hermit crab tank video to see the new levels! It grows as my hermits do! :)
7.) FOOD and WATER: their food is very diverse. And the meal has never harmed them, and the bottled pellets have never harmed them. They are all about 6 years old. (They are even featured on my old channel when I first got them) I swap up what they get and change it every other day. Some believe in doing it daily but I choose not too. I've never had any problems so I will not be changing my routine with them :) their water is dechlorinated,you could also use distilled, I DONT RECOMMEND chemically distilled or dechlorinated with the powders from store. I do not believe those are healthy for fish or crabs.

    Hey Guys! Here are some helpful FAQS 1. I use dechlorinated water for my crabs by letting it sit out for 48hrs, but you can use drops. 2. I use Eco earth substrate which is SAFE but you can also use a eco & sand mix. 5+ inches 3. My hood light provides perfect heat for my crabs(incandescent bulb) but I'm in the south, for extra heat you can put a UTH on the BACK side of the tank if needed. Hermit crabs do not require UVB. But can be given it- be sure to not overhear. 4. 5 gallons per crab approx. 5. They need 3-5 extra shells per crab to switch into available at all times 6. Saltwater must be provided to help with molting, you can use bottled or a instant ocean mix you would use for fish. 7. Keep the tank warm, purple pinchers are okay with 75+ but most other species do well in the 78-80 range. 8. Humidity is always needed so the crabs can breathe, 75%+ and higher is fine! 9. If your crab is burried and hasn't surfaced in a few days THATS OKAY. This is very common, even if they are not molting. 10. Always provide your crab a great variety of food, pellets will not kill them! But their are better things you can provide them like veggies & fruits! 11. I clean my tank about 3 times a year :) Hope this answers SOME questions you guys have had, but obvi there is much more I didn't cover here, feel free to watch the rest of my videos! Xo :)

    AshLee Woodall ... I will try, in a nutshell don't bother them and allow them to eat the exoskeleton, and make sure to give them plenty of veggies for strength after 💗 and the saltwater helps the shed fall off easily :), I'm going to be totally honest, I've slowed down on the crab videos Bc I get so much backlash, but I do try to do about 1 a month 💗🦀

    my mom bought two hermit crabs for my brother about a year ago and put them in a plastic fish tank of sand with a water bowl. my brother kept saying he could do it on his own, and we let him. he didn't know how long they lived or anything at all, so he thought it was normal when they borrowed under the sand for a month and went limp when he resurfaced them to see them. i don't think he ever fed them. my brother has grown tired of the three crabs he now has, and i'm taking over them, and i want to give them the best life they can have. thank you so much for making this, my crabs will live long, happy lives with your help!!

    Or you could do some research instead of believing one girl on youtube who, upon any amount of further research, you will realize does everything wrong. owning hermit crabs isnt about what they can tolerate in captivity, its about creating their natural wild habitat inside s glass box. If these were captive bred animals, I might agree to lesser terms of care, but these are wild animals and anything less than what the require in the wild is cruelty.

    Thanks for the good information! I watched this video last night along with a few others on hermit crab care. I was gifted two small-medium hermit crabs a few months ago, and it was time to clean their cage so I wanted to learn how to do it and realized there was a few things I could do differently to give them a longer, happier life. I got some good climbing stuff, different kinds of food, a log and rocks. Also I arranged the sand(sorry I know you said eco but I didn’t want to shock them too much with changes) in a deep to shallow slope. They’ve been in the new tank for about 20 minutes and are already crawling around curious of the new stuff! I don’t usually comment on videos but found this very helpful! Thank you!

    Pet store worker here! We’re a small local pet store, our hermit crabs are in a 20 gallon with lots of java wood to climb on and lots of plants, fresh and saltwater, hides, decorations, and 3-4 inches of substrate. We give them greens and squash for their diet until they go home with their new family! It’s obviously not 10/10 but for a small pet store, I’d say it’s not bad. I like working in that store because everyone there is truly an animal lover. We got these tiny fishbowls in one day and everyone mutually agreed to trash them, it was great lol Loved the video!

    Destinee Brady I can help you by writing out what I heard so you can read it and understand the same information that I received from the video. When trying to decide what tank size you need to get your crab you first need to take a look at their shell size. a 10 gallon aquarium is good for the size that is shown at 2:05 3 crabs of that size can happily live in a 10 gallon tank A 20 gallon tank is recommended for a crab the size of what is shown at 2:30 but if you only have one crab that is that big you could get away with a 10 gallon. if you have 2 or more crabs 20 gallon is suggested. her crabs have plenty of room in the tank shown at 2:43 it is 20 gallon. Whenever you have a tank that has multiple different sized crabs living in it, you are putting them at risk of fighting and the larger crabs can kill them. She has never experienced this, but recommended that a large tank is best in order for them to get along. Hermit crabs can start out small but they grow and they shed their exoskeleton as time moves on. Make sure and get a proper hood light for your tank. Example is shown at 3:42 you want to make sure that your crabs never get too cold because they cannot generate their own body heat. Links are in her description box for more information. Humidity it also important. She didn’t expound on this topic but said there are links in the description box. Substrate levels are based on the size of your crab. She likes to put hers at 6 inches but she lets it decline as it goes down the tank. Example shown at 5:26 Make sure you do it correctly because moisture is important. She said about 6 inches of substrate is a really good rule of thumb. Make sure and do your research she said. And watching other videos are helpful. Her favorite brand is shown at 6:17 she said sand is not good for the crabs some people have had experience of it killing their crabs because the sand tended to get stuck and harden in the shell. Her hermit crabs love fake plants and logs and trees. They love to explore and thrive so it is important to decorate their tank with a few of these things. Example at 7:09 they really enjoy climbing and looking around. It is very important that they have plenty of shells so as they grow they can choose and change out shells. Hermit crabs are very picky when it comes to shells so make sure and do your research. For food and water she already has a video which is mentioned at 8:10 and is linked in the description box. You need to make sure they have a wide variety of food and multiple options to choose from. Raw fruits and vegetables, dry fruits and vegetables, a shrimp meal, and of course their pellets. Do not leave the food in their tank for long periods of time it starts to mold after 48 hours. They need salt water as well as fresh water. And it is important to put these things in dishes and not sponges. More information is found in her diet video. And last but not least do your research! It is important to learn about your new little companions so you are aware of what they need. I hope I was able to help and I hope you ended up learning all you need to know about hermit crabs! Enjoy the rest of your day. And enjoy your little crab!

    this video really helped me so much. i used to take SUCH bad care of my crabs before and now they have everything they need. I started this youtube channel around 5 years ago in February 2016 and you could really see I didn't know how to care for my crabs when I began. I was so young, and my parents bought a hermit crab for me thinking it would be an easy pet. now here I am, writing letters to beach shops about the abuse their crabs endure and educating random pet store workers lol!! thank u lori

    I'm so happy, hearing that they usually die in one year makes me happy because my hermit crabs have been living for 2 or 3 years so far, I feel sad about that but I'm glad that they've lived for so long. Rebekah Blauth .... yes sadly those hermits are forced into those shells and it's so sad, it's very bad for them, if you get one please make sure you get a large glass tank, hood light for the top, exo earth or a good digging substrate not rocks or sand, saltwater and freshwater, a variety of pellets and veggies, and at least 5 smooth shell options per crab so they can change into a slightly bigger one! I love that you made this video! I had had my hermit crabs for years now and this video really sums up everything you need to take great care of your hermit crabs! Especially the last part where you said not to take crab care advice from the employees at the store because most the time like you said the crabs are in a horrible environment. Most of the time I see the crabs in the stores have painted shells and as much as you like the painted shells they are actually really bad for your crab because the paint may start to chip off and the crabs will try to eat it and cause your crab to get sick and probably die.

    I've been watching your videos and they are a lot of help, my son won two crabs from a carnival game which I didn't expect him to, but he did so that was my fault, so I have their 20 gallon long set up pretty close to yours, when I put them in they were pretty active and explored, later that night they buried them selfs in the eco earth it's been almost two Day and they have not came out to eat, is that something I should worry about?? And do you keep the light on all day and night??? Thank you so much for your videos they are a huge help!! And I have tried to do as much research as I can my self too.

  • @LorisHartland

    Hello! If the crabs were from the situation I am assuming they were, painted shells, in a crappy tank at the carnival in the sun, and now very stressed from being in a new home... then they will likely be buried for quite a few days if not longer. They should be totally fine if you have plenty of food and veggies, salt water & dechlorinated in bowls, eco earth or eco earth sand mix & moisture they should be able to live happily (shell options & decor too) Honestly, if they survive the stress of what they came from then they are strong & will be wanting to molt and change shells very soon! Make sure to have at least 3-5 new slightly bigger shells per crab for them to change into available for their picking! sounds like you are doing great! don't handle them and let them get comfy. My crabs were very shy and burried for weeks at a time at first but now they are out constantly but I've had them about 8 years. Set your tank up as close to mine as you can and if they are healthy and strong they will be fine :) also- I leave my light on 12on\12off but in winter I sometimes leave it on 24hr if its a really cold night

    Littlelotti's Hartland Yes they have everything they need, just haven't seen them out, I'm leaving them be so they can get comfortable just not sure how long they usually stay under, they have plenty of shell options for when they are ready to move out of their very small shells, I'm just hoping they will live out the rest of their lives in their new home.

    My tank is a 10 gallon with three pretty small crabs. I mist the cage daily with salt water. Is it supposed to be fresh? Also the heater keeps it at about 70-71 degrees, is this too cold? I recently got them, and I'm afraid I'm wrong.

  • @LorisHartland

    @LorisHartland

    7 жыл бұрын

    The Ender Realm ... don't mist With salt water, mist With dechlorinated fresh. The salt water is just to soak in before they molt, it helps their exoskeleton to peel off. And a 10 gallon is ok, high 70s is perfect 71-78 is great. Just don't go too hot. It can harm them. They are pretty hardy tho! Try not to worry as long as you give them everything I mention in the video you should be fine! 💗🦀

    Animal Lover I do

  • @ash9diver
    @ash9diver6 жыл бұрын

    Let me start by saying 1. I'm obviously a high fan of this channel and everything you do and 2.all animals should all have the best care possible and no matter how big and small you should treat a animal with the love and compassion you would another person. BUT I HAVE NEVER SEEN SO MANY PEOPLE GET SO WORKED UP OVER CRABS! This tank looks awesome to me! I love it and I actually used your videos the most when planning out my tank and how to care for the 4 crabs I currently have and I'm learning more all the time! They are happy and active (for crabs anyway)! They love the tank set up and have lots of room even if they just will walk to one side and sit a whole day and move the the other aside at the end of the day. Eating time (10pm from what I've noticed is when they come out to eat) is their most active time they will eat and get into the water bowls (with sea sponges) I have for them and they just live their little lives. SO WHAT I AM SAYING IS these are such great videos helping people to learn about proper crab care which so many people do not know is even a thing! Every size and type of crab will have different needs and wants. If these crabs are alive and look happy (and they do!) why be so outraged? This tank is a lot better than the majority I bought my crabs from petco where the substrate was only about a inch deep and one of my crabs I got from a shop at a beach area that was in a cage and it never came off the wire! One sponge in each horrible cage for 30+ crabs and a tiny pinch of food on the "floor" so compared to most conditions this is glorious for them. Nothing will ever beat the wild for these fellas but this is better than the alternative. (Plus I live in Iowa so it's not like I could set them free). SO I think her tank set up is wonderful and everyone needs to stop criticizing and getting so mad about this instead give your tips (IN A NICE FASHION ) on how your crabs are thriving and we will learn from the tips instead of getting in pointless arguments. Just a thought

    Brooke Nohle yes please do but you can use a plastic container for temporary I do I use a huge 100 liter plastic container with non fertilized dirt from a bag and coco fiber mix I also have a heating pad under all of the substrate so maybe you can use that also make sure you have a lid bc when you mist it keeps the humidity in and plz buy a humidity gauge so you don’t cook the poor things

    When I kept my first hermit crabs I used a mixture of calcium terrarium sand and fish gravel and they did well with that for a good 8 years

    ~ sToRy TiMe ~ So I went to the beach and went beach combing and picked up a ton of shells. When I went back to the hotel room I realized ALL OF THEM HAVE FREAKING HERMIT CRABS IN THEM. I was gonna take them back to the beach the next day but then they all died and fell out of the shell. It smelled disgusting. So ya :) MoRaL oF tHe StOrY Don’t pick up pretty shells from the beach

    I have a hermit crab and his name is Mr.Crabs. He is so nice and it’s sad that my mother does not take good care of him with me. I’m starting to take good care of him and we’re giving him some sand today! Next time we go to the pet store, I’m going to buy him some more toys and climbs! He is so active today and letting us pet his shell for the first time! He is pretty big, but he is the perfect size for one of our tanks! He climbs out of our tank-cleaning cage, but he doesn’t go far. He’s so nice and deserves a good home. :>

    When I got my hermit crab I was told that I could keep it in a Tupperware dish with a paper towel. After doing research I found out all the right information and I've had my hermig crab for about 2 years now

    My sister and I are trying to convince our parents to let us get hermit crabs and all the things they need with our own money. We are doing as much research as we can and your channel is really helpful. Thank you.

    I used large acrylic panes to make the terrarium&glued it as water proof isn't required. Consider an inverted wooden table as the frame&base for the terrarium also there's vertical space that can be used too. Got multiple plastic tubs to contain sections for substrate and water separately making it easier to clean the sand later on. Make separate tubs for salt and fresh water to make it easier to replace them. Ended up with a vertical terrarium with multiple levels for the dozens of hermit crabs to play in. Placed potted plants like dandelions in it too.

    I'm so glad I found this video! This past Monday (3 days ago) I bought a pair of hermit crabs and since finding the channel I ordered 2 heating pads and bought a 20g long tank. I noticed they haven't been on the sand once and I had the smell of the sand when I open the crabitat (its not a bad smell but more like a stale wet sand smell) my ceabs seem to think its weird and have been cuddled up on a cholla log i have. I'll switch to the eco earth substrate and see if it helps when I set up the 20g tank tomorrow
