The book wasn’t wrong, the movies inappropriately display what was really happening. The methods in the standard potions books do work but Snape came up with better methods of creating potions than the curriculum for 6th year potions students. It also demonstrates how Snape is capable of using knowledge to come up with his own conclusions whereas Hermione is as only as good as the books she has

Remember, how many times she saved the day/Harry by coming up with some genius creative solutions. She was very witty and quick thinker, not just knowledgeable. They were in the class though which required following textbook...

Technically this class is at a higher level that you have to have gotten a certain grade in the OWLs the year before, so there wouldn’t be as much handholding since the people in this room are headed towards a completed magical education within two years, they scored high enough to get into this class, and in the real world you would be brewing potions from books, not from instructions written on a board. Plus they’re just different people who may have different teaching methods. Slughorn is also standing back to see if anybody new can distinguish themselves without any assistance. Which technically happens, even if Harry cheated. Hermione received some praise and said it was a close second if I remember correctly.

The only reason that Harry didn't do well in potions up to this point was because Snape was bullying him. His mother, Lily, was very good at potions, and his father's family made their money from inventing and selling popular potions like Pepper-up, Skelegrow and Sleekeazy's hair potion. Potions should have been one of Harry's best subjects, if it wasn't for Snape's attitude. I also think that if Harry's parents had lived long enough, he would have picked up a lot of potion-making tips and been top of the class.

Well it was cheating since he got 1to1 instructions & extra advice that the other students in the class didn’t got in their normal text books He also didn’t learn he simply followed the instructions, not any different than following a recipe when baking Ron & Hermione were pissed at Harry for „cheating“ and getting step for step instructions & extra advice but it was too suspicious to let them look in his book too (in the books) Harry always sucked at potions till he found that book & simply followed the instructions and replaced Hermiones position as the best potion brewer of the class. The book gave 1to1 instruction that Harry simply had to follow so it became his new favorite subject instead his worst and most hated

That's not cheating because the person that he was getting one on one instruction from turned out to be the potions teacher that should have been teaching them that way anyways it's not cheating that he got an extra help by getting the old book it is just he got lucky and got a book that had better instructions than what Snape was teaching The big question is why isn't Snape teaching people this way anyways

And the first time harry followed snape's instructions without knowing it he brews a perfect potion thats why Hermione also couldn't make the potion. Usually she did very well in potions frankly she made the perfect polyjuice potion in her second year
