Herman's Hermits: "watching The Beatles in 1963..."

Фильм және анимация

Additional interview from the documentary series Carnaby Street, the Soho backstreet that spawned the swinging 60s
vimeo.com/ondemand/14108
The series chronicles the period in London from 1950-1978. Part 1 (1950-66) Britain comes out of War, The Beatles were formed and fashion and music centre around Carnaby St. Part 2 (1966-78) the height of Swinging London the summer of love The Beatles split and the youth revolution is over.
Carnaby Street, the Soho backstreet that spawned the swinging 60s tells the story how a generation that came out of war torn Britain started a cultural revolution that changed fashion and music forever. This was the time of sex, drugs and rock n roll, Mods, Hippies, female liberation, drugs and of course the summer of love.
The story of the Soho backstreet that made the world swing, is told by the people that were there, which include Roger Daltrey (The Who), Peter Noone (Herman's Hermits), Garry Leeds (The Walker Brothers), The Beatles, Mick Jagger (The Rolling Stones), Donovan, Frank Alan (The Searchers), Tony Calder (Immediate Records), the Fashionistas from the time and many more, they all give personal insight into the iconic time of the 1960s, how it came to be and how it came to pass.
It is rare for a film to have such open and honest interviews from such wide ranging people. Combining current and archive interviews the film gives a real sense and feel of that time. We are taken on a journey from what caused the 60s youth revolution and what brought it to an end. The film is brought to life by Original music from the EMI archives, rare archive film footage, photographs from Phillip Townsend, the 1st person to photograph The Rolling Stones as well as the Beatles and others, personal photographs from the stars themselves and animations of 1960s illustrations from the Artist Malcolm English.
With 30 extra video clips from the interviews about the myths of what created that time, Carnaby Street, the Soho backstreet that spawned the swinging 60s creates a unique experience and insight into the lives and people who changed fashion and music worldwide. This is the story of "Swinging London", this is the story of the 60s.

I've seen Peter twice in the last ten years.. he's a genuine friendly down to earth guy..I asked him what the deal was with himself and Jagger (he did a Mick impression in his show)..he jokingly told me "he's me grandfather" and laughed his head off. Noone is great.

I like Peter’s honesty. He tells this story himself. ‘Ready Steady Go’ , l think 1964. The Beatles and Herman’s Hermits on the show. At the end of the programme they were all packing up , heading back to London. Peter to The Beatles “ Any chance of a lift back lads? “ All four Beatles in unison “ No!”

Funny thing is, when the Beatles were still a club band, they DID do “I’m Henry The Eighth” - Joe Brown had a hit with it in the early ‘60s in England, and George was a huge fan of him, so when the Beatles did it George sang lead. What I’d give to hear a recording of that.

Wondering if the phenomenon of screaming girls was the catalyst that may have shifted their focus to copying/emulating what was so Fab. To be clear, the bass player shown in this video was not Alan Wrigley. He was replaced after the initial audition with producer Mickie Most. Epstein signed them BECAUSE of their stage presence. Lemmy (Motorhead) saw them in the early days before they made it. "They had attitude: Onstage, they were like a four-headed monster.” “They would come on stage (The Beatles) and you were just awestruck. They had that presence, which is very rare. Hendrix had it, Ozzy Osbourne has it to an extent. You’ve either got it or you haven’t.” "...the Beatles were hard men too. Brian Epstein cleaned them up for mass consumption, but they were anything but sissies. They were from Liverpool, which is like Hamburg or Norfolk, Virginia--a hard, sea-farin' town, all these dockers and sailors around all the time who would beat the piss out of you if you so much as winked at them. Ringo's from the Dingle, which is like the f***ing Bronx. The Rolling Stones were the mummy's boys--they were all college students from the outskirts of London. They went to starve in London, but it was by choice, to give themselves some sort of aura of disrespectability. I did like the Stones, but they were never anywhere near the Beatles--not for humour, not for originality, not for songs, not for presentation. All they had was Mick Jagger dancing about. Fair enough, the Stones made great records, but they were always s**t on stage, whereas the Beatles were the gear."

@@raulmacias1311 They were already attracting huge club audiences before Epstein dressed them up, that's the point. They had presence, they were performers. And each act you see has had their image changed, that's what managers do. And every other band and act were dressed in suits. But The Beatles would not wear anything they didn't like, or do anything they didn't want. Motown even had a finishing school where their artists were all taught how to walk correctly, and dress. And that was pre Beatles. The thing which set the Beatles apart was their songs, ability, their natural charm and personalities. It wasn't what they wore, although even there they were always ahead of the rest of their peers. The Rolling Stones image was "anti Beatles" because that's how their manager Andrew Loog Oldham wanted to market them. And it worked.
