why is it that Devs think romancing a character HAS to be a party member? You could easily add NPC romanceable characters think fable, side characters that don't affect the main story or even play a part of it. The very last big RPG from Obsidian themselves - The Outer Worlds - fully suppoted pacifist run: you could talk, or sneak, or lockpick/hack, etc through the whole game without shooting a single person or creature even once, should you desire. Among other games - an openworld RPG like Kindome Come Deliverance also supported full pacifist run and even had a Steam achievement for it. 😅

You really need a strong buffing strategy to fight the strongest enemies of that game and I always hated having to buff characters during battles, it's just not my style and I always try to just make them passively strong enough to tackle anything, even if I have to sink more hours into the game... Unfortunately PoE doesn't seem to support my type of play style completely, but it is what it is...

@@PunkRockZombie205 Yeah, I researched and tried the tricks people recommended, even starting to employ buffing strategies with Durance (which was always a main member of my party, I just never needed to use him to his full potential before), but as I said, it just isn't my thing to play like that and it didn't feel fun, so I stopped at around the 6th try. I got close the 4th time, but when the next ones were worse, I decided to stop instead of keep stressing myself out, since I really wasn't having fun. This stuff really curbed my motivation towards the game (I was already losing interest anyway after playing so much of it and that was the final thing). I stopped at some point during the second part of the White March explansion, without even finishing the main game, with one of the main reasons being because I knew at the end I definitely wouldn't be able to defeat the main bosses (you know which ones) and would be forced to make a deal with them... I still plan on going back and trying again, from the start, and maybe trying to ease myself into other play styles that are more effective. Maybe I can take a liking to them, and for such a good game overall, I'm willing to make that effort.

I'm pretty disappointed in the lack of romance, personally. It's not going to stop me from playing the game though by any means. I look at titles like Dragon Age: Origins, Divinity: Original Sin 2, Balder's Gate 3, Witcher 3, Mass Effect 2 (Tali my beloved), etc, and maybe I'm just a sucker for love stories but I always find myself so much more personally invested when that kind of element is included. Riding off with the Aldecaldos in CyberPunk 2077 has so much more oomph when you're playing a character that found belonging and love despite losing so much to Night City. Even smaller titles like Expeditions: Rome, or the Owlcat CRPGS, I find romance subplots, even if smaller, as long as they're done in a way that highlights aspects of those characters and aids in building that sense of companionship they really add a lot for me.

Also later in the story I decided SPOILER WARNING to marry Anora so Alistair and her do not have to be forced together and it almost broke my heart seeing Leilana leaving me even though I made her leave me. Pillars of Eternity 2 is a direct sequel to the first game. You'll get way more out of the second one if you can play both of them. That is because these games are hugely character driven games. Not only will your own character likely have meaningful changes throughout the series, but those of your companions as well, some of whom you will have through both games (or even if a character doesn't appear in the second game, will have some connection to companions you do have in the second game). You'll also get to see things in the second game that is consequence from you choices in the first game. I guess the best way I could put it is how would you feel if you played just some of the Mass Effect trilogy but not all of them? It'd pretty much be similar here. You should play both if you can, even play them on a relaxed difficulty. In any case, the first game does the better job of world building and introducing the player to the world of Eora, which I think you'd appreciate Avowed more from. It has some deep lore. So it's best to start at the beginning and hopefully get to the second game.

Hot take from me, but the fact that they added 3rd Person perspective is probably what saved the game for a big number of players. Not to insult devs who create these sort of 1st person games, but they always have sloppy combat with 0 weight behind them and avowed clearly is the same. In 3rd person, you can put full weight into each attack, making the combat very much worth investing into. None of these sort of 1st person games make combat like in kingdom come. Although i dont like how unrealistic it is (0 chance people fought in such a way in actual non tourney combat) i can appreciate it over flat combat other sword swinging 1st person games are. My general preference lies in 3rd person or RTwP isometrics, they are the best imo. For the romance bit, im neutral, i like romance but i prefer good story in general. What i am worried about is whether this current obsidian has the skill to make good shit. The art style doesnt feel right for me ngl but im willing to be proven wrong. When it comes to progression, i want to have the same capabilities as in DAO. I want to be dual wielding (rogue) in plate armour. Dedicate into dex and STR to wield 2 swords and wear full suit of armour. If i am bound into a poor progression which locks my gear into classes, im calling the progression dogshit. Lets be real, ever since we have gone past DAO, a lot of RPGs suddenly decided to downgrade progression, thinking class locking gear is good design. Its not. DA2 and DAI were utter shit for actual progression for example. When they decided to class lock everything, it was the start of downfall. What happened to experimentation? All of it was just gamefied and left out the cool parts of fantasy.

POE2 Deadfire is one of the best isometric RPGs on the market, full stop. And the character/companion reactivity is great. It has a similar reputation system to New Vegas, but a little more fleshed out. Your companions form their own opinions of each other as well as their own relationships with each other. Not everyone gets along, and a couple companions can even romance each other if you’re not pursuing them. And that’s not to mention the excellent exploration,

Regarding Skyrim (and Avowed) and having all the perks... look at the Skyrim total conversion mod, Enderal. They streamlined the perk trees to like 3-4, and specced them out so you could really only master one. There was some kind of fusion system for combining two. They also made a tree just for lycanthropy, so you could completely ignore that content if you wanted to, or you could spec into it (and maybe pair it with the melee combat stuff?). That mod got so many things right with the Skyrim engine, it's at least an oversight to overlook its contributions to the conversation all these games are having. Also, the advantage of a "jack of all trades" approach is that you don't know which play styles the game will favor later, especially when the game is much harder. So, I think it's up to a good developer - and, Obsidian is one I trust to accomplish this - to make the game fun for all play styles from beginning to end.

I feel like you can add a romance axis to a friendship path with companions pretty easily and leave people satisfied. Solas from DAI and Garrus from ME2 are good examples of this. Not much changes from friends vs romance, but there’s enough that people love these options. For POE, if you have the time to play both do so, as the MC and some companions carry over. But if you only have time for one Deadfire is the better game and story.

If no romance that is a little disappointing to be honest. I do enjoy a good romance arc in a game. I'm with you though I like it to be a bit more impactful than shoehorned in. I did like Pavarti's (I think that's how you spell it) quest but I was supremely disappointed that I couldn't romance her, because she was genuinely a great character and I got along with her and it just felt like they purposefully took that away from me as the player as if to say "you want this and we know you do but you can't have it because we're Obsidian and we don't want to be like everyone else". And idk, that just rubs me the wrong way. There's nothing wrong with including it like everyone else does, but HOW you implement it is how you would set yourself apart. Give me a Revan and Bastilla level romance, not a Skyrim and random-npc romance, but don't take it away from me just because you think having romance is too much of a "box to check" that's just silly. Either way, I'm still stoked for Avowed, and the presence or absence of romance isn't ever enough to not get me to play a game so it's not a huge deal but those are my thoughts about it.

I think respec'ing is a vital component in any new RPG these days - but it should be gated behind some kind of meaningful cost. Like a rare drop, that you need to use to pay for it each time, or something like that. I think the typical, 'lose 'x' percentage of your gold each time', is a bit weak. (edit: btw, play Pillars 1, then 2 :) . The story will be infinitely richer for you !!!)

I'll most likely be sitting this one out, especially after hearing that there are no romance mechanics. I prefer games with romance options because they make me feel more invested in the characters like I get to choose who I want to be with during the journey. That's why I never finished the Outer Worlds because there was no romance. I know it might sound petty, but that's my preference. I want an RPG where you feel invested emotionally in your companions, be it in a romantic way, platonic, and familial. Heck, even Dragon's Dogma 2 had lite romance mechanics, and I loved that game so much. Hearing Metaphor ReFantazio having no romance as well makes me want to back down on my Collector's Edition pre-order too.

Obsidian writers have expressed time and time again that they have an almost visceral reaction to writing romance for player characters specifically, so this isn't really surprising to me. I think it's more symptomatic of their style of writing in general, they just don't like to focus on the player character too much. For me personally romance isn't an absolute must have, but it's cool when it's there.

About Pillars matty: ive been a long time viewer of yours, plus podcast and all. We have the exact same taste in games. Every time you bring up not playing pillars if eternity it baffles me. Its got exceptional lore that made me love the setting. The lore quality is up there with kotor, mass effect, and tyranny for me. The first game is a lot darker and has some VERY long winded dialogue. The second game is my personal preference though. Firstly, it is much more light hearted, has voice acting, and has condensed but still very good and meaningful dialogue. The second game also perfected the real time with pause combat system. It feels punchy in a way no other rtwp combat system does. It also has a decent turn based mode but it drags the length of the game out tremendously because fights that used to take a few seconds not take several minutes. My favorite part of the second game is that it actually has exploration on the world map. There are tons of islands to explore and secret dungeons and bosses to find. The second game also has a faction system and the lore between them all and how it ties into parts of the main story (audra and souls) is so cool. Pillars is the only series other than elder scrolls where i can name all the gods and tell you a bit about their domains and whatnot. I feel like its as close to a matty-coded game as you can get thats just outside of what you typically truly love. I just know that as soon as you finish it youre going to be going “how the hell did i not play that ages ago?!” And youre gonna be beating yourself up about it for a while 😂 Cheers matty, love ya, love the channel, love dd, and im Happy to be a long term fan.

I’m a big dummy who doesn’t really understand how games are made. (I’d love a documentary which goes deep into what day to day development really looks like). How do you tune something like swinging a sword and the sense of impact? Is it a coding issue or is it an animation and sound problem? I know it’s probably a mix of both, but I’d love to see the process broken down for people like me who are curious about the ins and outs of game dev.

They really advertised this game soo wrong didn't they? It seems any news now is how there trying to say how this game is more than just the clunky action they have shown and are busy tryiing to say how this game actually plays, and yet never actually show it. Instead they just show more action clips. Whoever is in charge of marketing this game needs to step aside and let someone else have a go. Show us how this game plays, show up an example of choices and consequences , show us how one build setup against an enemy is different to another ext. Give us a quick background of companions. You know actually show us the strengths that people know from Obsidian games.

So Larian can make Baldur's Gate 3 one of most in depth RPGs, have romance options and still make characters feel real....but Obsidian cant do the same thing? I know some hate comparing modern and future titles to BG3 but if Larian can do it with the resources they had, Obsidian should be able to as well. I respect not having it as a creative decision but I don't buy their explanation, that it would have taken too much time or they didn't have the means to do it.

I think Avowed is aiming for a tight experience, and to make romance feel real you need lots of time spent with the partner. Adding even 2 or 3 hours of content for relationships to each character for a 13 hour game would turn it into a dating Sim and really wouldn't make any sense.
