I had something similar(ish) happen a few weeks ago - but the guy was probably 17 and blasting out Journey. I felt there was still hope for us all lol.

The lead singer considers his voice to be a instrument and therefore he sits back in the mix. Even on stage he is way in the back, so even if you are not catching the lyrics it is about the feel and mood first.

You haven't been to Tool church yet. Parabol/Parabola played together one after the other no breaks. You must have the lyrics. Imagine you're in a big cathedral, stained glass windows, the whole thing. The video is great too, probably a must. You'll listen to everything Tool has done after this.

If you like the hype shit, Stinkfist definitely slaps. While TOOLs lyrics are pretty ambiguous and open to interpretation, it’s generally accepted that the song uses anal fisting (Stinkfist) as a metaphor to describe becoming desensitized and possibly addicted to something, be it media, drugs, or even another person. Probably my favorite song from them to see in concert.

It's a song about personal growth and change, and the painful process of self improvement. 46 and two is a reference to our chromosomes (humans currently have 22 pairs and one pair of sex chromosomes, or 44 + 2, the title is referencing evolving to our next stage).

it was not used, that part he was talking about was a Wah pedal, along with several other effects, with some heavy tremolo strumming/picking. its one of my favorite sounds of all time

46+2 hes singing about becoming the next species in evolution (humans have 44+2 = 46 chromosomes) his solution is stepping through his "shadow" ( a lot of connections to carl jungs philosophy of accepting the shadow within yourself to become whole) thats why when the slow part begins and the drums set it they try to do it as chaotic as possible, representing musicaly how the evolution takes place and he transforms into a new beeing (accepting the shadow like an armor) yea, their lyrics can be really genius, then theres songs that are straight up recipes in german or some shit.

well , integrating the shadow is also Masculinity and how men become Man, by facing your violent dark side and controlling it to become whole, the 46-2 is about possibly unlocking the chromosomes and it might lead to a new existence of humanity on a unconscious plane. The most wide theory about this lyrics (which there are many as it is intentionally vague) is that integrating your shadow is the key to reach a higher state of consciousness, so its a mix of the Shadow from Carl Young's work with Hippie notions of a global consciousness in my humble opinion. You can dive into it and come up with your own interpretation or just enjoy it, that's tool :D

I would add that there is evidence of fused chromosomes in human DNA. So going back to 24 chromosome pairs would be a move back to when those chromosomes weren’t fused. Also, all the great apes have 24 chromosome pairs but humans only 23 so it would be a devolution if you think about.

It's extremely artistic and somewhat strange, but the culmination of the song and video at the end is something to behold.

Most Tool tunes walk you slowly up the cliff then kick your ass off it. I recommend Sober, LIVE....only LIVE your first time. Or if your fellin mellow, try, Right In Two.

So Maynard the singer is also a core member of A Perfect Circle with the guitar player from Failure, Nurse who Loved Me is a Failure song from the album Fantastic Planet, an absolute MONSTER album.

The guitar part that you thought was a TalkBox was actually WahWah pedal effect that the guitarist (Adam Jones) plays with his foot

I recommend that you continue with the songs with a simpler rhythm so that you can see Tool's style without having a "I don't understand shit" face. A good option is parabol+parabola, they are two songs that are heard together since parabol is a kind of intro for parabola. Parabol is a very calm and slow intro but believe me, Parabola has a lot of power and is very heavy.

Tempest is a great workout song, everything on their last album is crazy.

How I envy getting to hear them for the first time again, Brother your in for a enjoyable journey, Saw them live in 2019 and it was probably the best show ive been to in my life. sooooo many bangers, Wings pt 1&2 are fantastic, their cover of no quarter is wild, vicarious, parabola, Stinkfist, Pneuma, Aenima. Yes 46&2 is one of their best sings bc of all the deep meaning of improving yourself…but to see your just honest hyped reaction to the music reminds me that they hit different. I’m not numb to it. You said something about sounds and it made me think of something about music knowledge that you might like. When the sound gradually gets louder is a crescendo. Getting softer is decrescendo. I've seen you react strongly to it. Rock bands use it a lot to emphasize their emotions in the music even without lyrics. That's what makes an awesome band like Tool. They know what they're doing with music knowledge

Im loving this series haha as an old tool fan i love seein people just discovering them. U should check out the parabol/parabola music video Also for 46&2 we have 46 chromosomes in out genes before the 2: Y (male) and X (female). The song is as u guessed a song where hes struggling with himself and his shadow (in the Jungian sense) Maynard has overcome a drug addiction and alot of this era of tool refrences that with themes of a spiritual journey, battling oneself, shame, and the unknown.

The whispers; "Join in my, join in my child As I'm digging through My old numb shadow" Then later "Join in my Join in my child As my shadow moves Closer to me now"

The album this is off of (Ænima) is their second album. On it they have a several songs that fit this pattern of Maynard singing at a kind of soft talking with a more simple (for Tool) music backup then the whole band dropping in HARD for the chorus.

15:38 - Yeah, if you're 25 that means you were born in either late 98 or early 99. Tool went on a thirteen year break from 2006 to 2019 so pretty much from first grade to two years out of high school they were in hiatus. I'm just glad to see as many people finding them because yeah they're legit. I can't remember if I mentioned this on an earlier video but Animals As Leaders is a lot of fun in the way Tool is instrumentally (just without a vocalist) and King Crimson (late 60's, 70's, and 80's band with some 90's and early 00's albums) who is the band that actually inspired Tool as far as the complexity. Tool's drummer Danny Carey is actually going on tour this fall with Steve Vai and two guys from the 80's and 90's roster of King Crimson (Adrien Belew and Tony Levin) are going to play songs from Discipline, Beat, and Three of a Perfect Pair (they've called the band 'Beat') and I believe Danny will be doing his own adaptation of Bill Bruford's drums which might mean an injection of Tool into KC classics. I'll be going to see that in a few months, should be pretty wild.

Lost keys (blame Hoffman) + Rosetta Stoned 🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯

The odd time signatures are a staple of Progressive Rock from Pink Floyd to Yes and RUSH through Dream Theater to TOOL. These bands create a unique sound through using odd time signatures but doing in a way that you either don't notice it or making it sound, just natural, though it isn't.

One that will blow your mind is one most reactors only get to on deep dives: Lost Keys / Rosetta Stoned These are intended to run back to back, like Parabol/Parabola, and there are great lyric videos out there that properly play them. You’ll want the lyrics as you won’t be able to follow Meynard’s flow

And once you are fully vested in this glorious band you need to watch the drum cam version of Pneuma.

It's a song about evolution that uses the metaphor of genetic and physical evolution to promote intellectual and spiritual evolution. The references to “shedding skin” and “crawling on my belly” invite comparison to a snake, which replaces its skin as it grows. The old is cast aside, and the new embraced...

Ticks and Leeches is my all time favorite TOOL song. It’s so good and applies to something every day lol

I've been a Tool evangelist since 1993, but this album (Ænima), was the one that brought in the most converts. There are plenty of one-offs from their other albums, like The Pot and Sober (check out the live version of Sober, holy hell, you won't regret it) , but song for song, this album was their peak. It was when they mastered production, but before they went too mathematical/esoteric for general audiences.

I have tool art tattoed on my back. 46&2 is what brought me in 20 ish years ago.

The other reason I suggest the drum cam video is that it forces you to focus on the drums, but Tool consists of 4 geniuses and there is so much going in a Tool song. Focus on the bass for a measure, then focus on the vocals, then the guitar. Each time I listen to the same song I notice something different. It’s like watching the same sunset from 4 different locations. Each view is so cool and so amazing but different; and some how all 4 fit together perfectly and form the whole sunset.

Another vote for Aenima. That's arguably their best song. There's a good reason they do it as the encore song for a lot of their shows. :)
