Here's Why You Can't Afford An R34 GTR Skyline

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This is how much Skylines are selling for RIGHT NOW: www.autotempest.com/s/bs3Q8G
Nissan Skyline GTRs are often considered the most coveted 90s JDM cars. And with many sales well into the 6 figure range, it seems that the market agrees with that as well. Today we discuss the history of the R34 Skyline GTR and how it got to the point of selling for over $359,000 US Dollars.

Correction. The R32 GTR was not exclusive to Japan. 100 Australian delivered models were sold to customers and are considered among some of the rarest GTRs in the world. Changes included a roof antenna, rear tail lights were changed from a double red lens to an amber and red lens combo for rear indication. Indicators were added to the front fenders, among other minor changes.

There's actually a fair amount of Skyline GT-R's that've been imported into New Zealand and Australia over the years, but they've all been modified or driven, unlike what's in Japan, where a lot of cars were parked up, which is partially the reason why when some wants a GTR, they look to Japan. Europe got a fair amount of Skyline GTRs as well, but I don't think as much, due to NZ and Aus relying a lot more on cars that were imported into the countries, rather than having a large auto manufacturing industry like Western Europe

I was 16 when I realised that the local Japanese import garage sold R33 GTS-Ts for £3,995, and that was also about the time you could get an R32 GTR for maybe £8k. I wanted one badly, but the insurance group on one was the same as you'd get with a Ferrari, so insurance was about the same price as the car.

The truly sad thing about this is, that with prices rising for GTR's, more and more collectors will become interested in owning one, or multiple ones, to add them to their garage collection and have them dust away under a cover, never to see a road again, causing GTR's to become more and more rare to be seen on streets for the sake of keeping/increasing their resell value. GTR's will soon join the sad fate of cars, which only got built to provide their future owners the ultimate driving pleasure and experience, getting stored away instead by people who only care about their resell value.

Bro, they did sell them in Australia. I believe it was limited to 100 units, R32's in about '90 or '91 from memory. Pretty sure it was just to homolgate them in our local touring car series, but nevertheless, Australia is the one place outside Japan that got a locally delivered GTR Skyline. Sidenote: they wiped the floor, and helped trigger a rule change in the series.

Great vid mate, just a couple of factual corrections to your video. The R32 was delivered by Nissan to another country, Australia. We had 100 R32 GT-R’s delivered to Australia by Nissan and sold at Nissan dealers. This was so they could race in the Australian Touring Car Championship, which they debuted in 1990 and won the championship in 91 & 92 before being banned. They were slightly different, with side repeaters in the front guards, a front roof mount aerial and indicators between the taillights. It was also the Australian press that nicknamed the car “Godzilla”, not Japan, in the Australian car magazine, “Wheels”. Because it was monstrous and was of course, from Japan. The name took hold though and is now a permanent nickname the world over. Gibson Motorsport was the team that really pushed the R32 GT-R performance in the Australian Touring Car Championship, pushing over 100hp more than the Japanese R32 touring cars. They Japanese took notice too and I’m sure some secrets were passed on to them by Gibson Motorsport. Hope that helps!

Great video, but to correct you on a couple of points... The R32 was given the name Godzilla from an Australian Car magazine named Wheels, and it came about as it was a beast of a car and almost unbeatable for a few years in our Group A racing at the time. And the R32 was sold outside of Japan, they were available for sale here in Australia, as well as Hong Kong and New Zealand in 1991 but never sold in huge numbers.

That's cool, I worked at a place that was selling them, they probably helped bring up the prices buying them cheap-ish from Japan doing a little maintenance and then jacking up the prices :O I didn't even know about those R33 Variants, most people seemed interested in the R32's and R34's for some reason, I liked the more modern sleeker look of the R33s the best I think, while not being as boxy and aggressive looking as the R34.

Like everything else, COVID and money printer going bbrrrrrr inflated the price heavily. Also, JDM Classics have become the new muscle cars, where people in their 30s and 40s are trying to buy the iconic cars of their youth. I love the R34, but no way in hell I'd pay over 60k for one. Honestly the pandemic completely screwed the market period. Prices on all used cars went through the roof not just the cars like the R34 and Mark 4 Supras. Mark 3 are still decently priced even the turbos, the only over priced ones I've seen are usually posted by someone who doesn't know why people go crazy for the mark 4.

@@bassplayer2011ify yeah i feel like part of it has to do with the government pumping a lot of money into the economy it’s not circulating and things definitely feel pricier

The JDM bubble will burst the moment people realize that the whole reason they were popular in the first place was due to their potential as affordable performance. Can't exactly brag that your Skyline is a Lamborghini killer if it costs just as much as one.

This is an excellent compilation of info detailing the the chronology of the Skyline! I really should have bought one of *so* many cars, USDM included, fifteen years ago! 911s, NSXs, MR2s, RXs, R32 (GT-R or GTS-T) and so on. Holding on to my 91 Fox-body for now, though. I really want something AWD, low-displacement, turbo or high-revving NA, and of course a stick. RHD is fine, neither a sticking point or a selling point. I'm hoping to get a Pulsar and one of those sweet umbrellas before it's too late, but I'm still saving money. Which means I won't be able to afford it before I have enough, like always! Okay, off to watch your NSX video. Cheers!

Was in college when the '99 GTR came out. Was wearing the t-shirts, building the model car from Tamiya just dreaming about owning one, and 23 years later - its just way out of reach still. Those wise with investments or C rated jobs can now afford it. Oh well, back to the station wagon build for me...

He's totally right I tried pricing out a Skyline in early 2019. Long story short they were about 2/3 of the price they are now.
