Hey Scotty. I have a 92 Buick Roadmaster Estate Wagon, and I hear quite a bit about how it's a future classic. I started fixing a few things on it, but I'm wondering if it's worth it to go all out and put a lot of money in it and make it brand new, in hopes that it will pay me back in the future. It runs wonderful btw, and I do love it, should I just run it until it doesn't want to, or actually try and keep it in tip top shape?

Never have a repair shop do a rebuild, always get a new, or quality rebult (Jasper comes to mind). and if you want to have it rebuilt have a good machine shop that is known for engine builds do it. A machine shop built engine very well may cost more money but normally will be built to exact specs. A person like MyvintageIron7512 for example. Salvage yard engines are usually fine as well, but I've seen duds and people eat their hats in extra money for having them replaced again.

Saturn is one of the most underrated automotive brands of all time. It was cheap, reliable, and often overlooked as competitors for 1/4 mile pulls at the local race strip. I had three of them, all together at once. Their biggest mistake was not to take their own advice. When they came out it was a no hassle brand. Different. Unique. and at the same time, revolutionary, the underdog. But then they fell into lazyness... And as a big Saturn fan it hurts to say it. 12 years using the same engine configuration... (The Ion line was just a GM disguise....) I mean... Ever since they came out all tie time were SC, SC2. SL, SL2. SW, SW2... Which were just a single or dual overhead cam.... no premium features... No evolution... 12 years. Thats all they came up with for 12 years.... I modified a 95 SC2 to make 11 seconds 1/4 mile... and it was a sleeper. Nobody could tell it was that fast just from looks... and it was all internals. No turbo.. just using the reliable 1.9 DOHC engine that came with it, and some stage 2 camshafts... But the other two.. they were my daily drivers for MANY years! 97 SC2, and 96 SC2. I miss them, and I really hope to be able to buy one of the best cars they made while they were still in business.... the Sky Redline. Which it was an Opel in disguise, but their design was amazing.. the Solstice is an abomination!!! (they share 90% of the parts), but it does turn heads. I miss Saturn. u_u

I did have an MSD coil, MSD wires, the usual Denso Iridium.... and and a high flow filter. Not much more. if you´re speaking about internals thats a whole different story... and budget. haha

The last few years of Saturn were nothing like the good ones at the beginning. The BYD engines were garbage. The bodies were no longer polymer and became very rust prone sheet metal, and the materials for the interior became incredibly inferior. The early Saturn was a great car I really miss.

Saturn failed when it became the one thing it was never meant to be. A rebadged Chevy. The early ones that were independently developed and manufactured were well put together. Sure they had a cheaper interior, but the things would run and run and run. After GM started forcing badge engineering on Saturn it started to go downhill fast. Sharing the same poor engines and transmissions with it's GM siblings sank the reliability.

I mean you can replace absolutely everything all the way down to the sub frames. Many upgraded aftermarket components are available as well. I've seen 3rd Gens with all tubular suspension components, 4-wheel independent suspensions, all kiiinds of stuff.

The V6 that GM put into the Saturn L-Series sedan was before the Saturn Vue with the Honda V6 IIRC. That V6 had a beautiful throaty snarl to it. I enjoyed driving my cousin's L-Series cause of the soundtrack. I remember the first time I drove it and I'll never forget when the engine got around 2,000 RPMs and that's when the GM signature V6 snarl kicked in. It really encouraged me to drive a little faster than normal while I borrowed it.

The same version of that car went for $10-12K more as a Chevy, and considering what I paid it was a good decent car, only minor issues like a sensor needed to be replaced, pretty reliable. It was however cheaply made, you could see the brake wires dangling from outside the car which thinking about now it's dangerous and had the worst turning radius, an RV would turn better.

Not totally agreeing on what you said on the automatic transmission (Sadly my case, i prefer manual). In 300 000kms mine never broke. Only had to remove oxidation from selector switch ground once. Not too sure about general quality decreasing with time either. The S serie never really changed or lost any reliability with generation changes. The changes were more body panels than anything from 1990 to 2002. The Ions that replaced them though...yikes. They were more Opel with Saturn badges than anything. I learned something about the Honda engine they put in Vues, though. I knew they had Honda engines but never knew about that coolant story and it made sense to me.

The only real Saturn's were the Saturn S-Series cars. Made from the early 90s until 2002. All models came with either a single cam four-cylinder or dual cam four-cylinder. The real problem with the automatic transmissions was the valve body. Otherwise the automatic Saturn s series were great cars. A rebuilt valve body from a reputable company is pretty cheap these days and very easy to replace. I've personally put over 200,000 miles on a Saturn S-Series with an automatic transmission and the original valve body in the transmission. It's a great car and I still drive it today. The problem with Saturn was when GM started using Opels as rebranded Saturn's. That then became the demise of Saturn. If Americans were more practical and really appreciated what Saturn was trying to do, I feel as though Saturn could have improved greatly on what was already a great car in the S Series.

I owned 30 cars. VW, Volvo, Chevrolet, Suzuki, Honda and Toyota and none of them has been as reliable as my Saturn yet. None of them were as sporty from factory either. Not the fastest in acceleration even if it's quite decent (0-100 in 9seconds auto or around 8 in manual) but the handling is pretty amazing. Fuel friendly, good brakes, never seen anything expensive to fix them, parts are still available and else. I could only complain about the look of the car or how terrible is the interior assembly.

Saturn owner here. The manual I had was super solid. It ran 268000 miles before the frame rusted out. My auto dealt with a slam shift. The main 2 problems are the valve body and input shaft bolt. When auto saturns slam shift, most mechanics say the car needs a rebuilt transmission when it usually needs one or both of those issues addressed. Their transmissions were good for the most part. Figures GM would find a way to screw up the electronics.

93-02 Saturn S-series are the only ones worth getting. While the oil consumption problem was indeed a problem, there were ways of fixing it. Asides from that, some other really minor problems , and the cheap plastic interior parts, they were pretty solid. My first car was a '94 SC1 5-speed manual bare-bones with over 260K and it never left me stranded anywhere so long as I topped off the oil every 1000 miles. Definitely one of the better domestic 4 cylinder cars at the time that was an exception to GM products.

Um... Saturn quit making cars because during GM's restructuring they had to downsize because there were too many cookie-cutter redundant models. That's essentially how Saturn and Pontiac got the ax.

Dilly Dally well Pontiac would’ve been saved had it not been for Buick. Because Buick is so popular in China which is stupid. We are not China. We will never be China. Buick sucks. Bring Pontiac back gm

@@Bucks7542 Pontiac was great up until the late nineties By the end they were the worst. The G6 and saturn aura were on the same platform but the g6 was a Pontiac and the quality control sucked so they were junk compared to the Aura having way less options too. The torrent was way behind the vue too. I could go on. Buick is a more luxury category of gm. Pontiac was way worse than buick at the time. You obviously haven't been in many buicks. The quality of materials on the interior. The extra options only buick has. The unique look they have and how good it handles were way past Pontiac. The new buicks are beautiful cars. Font forget the Grand National which is one of the most iconic cars ever made. And during a time cars had little power they made more power out of the turbo v6 than most other brand was getting from their v8 engines. Buick deserved to stay. The early 70s GTOs are in my top favorite cars. The early 2000s grand am wide track and the Bonneville were awesome. But after that they made little chic cars or ugly versions of the chevy counterpart They were awful. Ford should've kept mercury though. They looked better and had more options than ford's regular lineup. The cougar super couple was fun And the fox body style cougar with the High Output 5.0 looked nicer than a mustang but compete with it in speed since fox body's were so light. Mercury always looked cooler but gm should've saved Oldsmobile over buick. They would've sold better. I had a barebones Oldsmobile Sierra that went 300k and still ran and shifted perfect before it rusted apart. Pontiac was literally the worst American brand existing when it went under. Any other brand that stopped was more deserving to keep going. Pontiac became a joke Nobody wanted one

It was such a money pit, it was literaly sickening how much money I put into it and it would constantly fall apart and break down. And dont ger me started on the oil leak! Does your have an oil leak problem?

I used to say "Saturn is GM with a great PR agency". I had a Saturn SC2 Sport Coupe, manual transmission. Alternator and something else major failed at 60K miles. Sold at 100K miles because I was worried it would fall apart. Seemed to consumed a lot of oil, I was told it had looser tolerances so it burned more oil.

If anyone is actually interested in the history of Saturn vehicles, I was a tech for them when the company first started. The truth of it is the original models of these vehicles were the SL1 & 2, the SW1 & 2, and the SC1 & 2. The 1 models had a 1.9 liter with a throttle body and single overhead cam. The 2 models had a 1.9 dual overhead cam with port fuel injection. All models were available either a 5-speed manual or an automatic transmission version. Not trying to rain on your parade here, but I had these vehicles, the ones that were taken care of, running over 400,000 miles. Did automatic transmissions fail? Yes...but no more than other vehicles that I have seen over the years. Anyone want to talk about Honda Accords with a v6 and trans problems? In any case, those first generation vehicles were actually their own entity and only affiliated with GM. They actually had a plant in Tennessee that built them, and the engines were Saturn's own, not a GM built or any other. Later, they did move into v6 engines built by Honda. However, their downfall was when they decided to use Saab drivetrains, not GM. GM happened to use the same Saab trash however. Any of the Saturn's built after the first generation ones were only a shell of what the company once was. I can say this, I actually still own a repair shop, and I still have customers that bought one of these original Saturns that is still their daily driver. Were they luxury like say a lexus? no...Are they half the price and just as reliable? Yes.

My son also worked at a Saturn dealership. I believe the reason they closed was when the Cash for Clunkers and whatever else Obama screwed up that caused many GM dealers to be closed. Many of the Saturns were great cars. My son brought different models home and I drove a Sky which was crazy fast. My neighbor still drives a Vue and still loves it. It is a manual transmission. My son bought a new Ion Red Line in 2006 and still has it, but has not driven it in a couple of years. Talk about a hot rod, supercharged and factory race ready with Recaro racing seats and suspension 0to 60 in under 5. I believe Saturn was better than the average Chevrolet. It's a shame it closed down.

In 2004 I owned a Saturn SL as a beater car. It actually only had 30,000 miles on it when I bought it. The previous owner was a little old lady. One time I was backing down a client’s driveway in reverse, I put the car in drive and something shot right through the transmission case from inside the transmission. I had to stop every couple miles to put transmission fluid in it to get it home. I got it fixed and I sold it. That particular model also had an issue with the engine cradle rusting out.

The Saturn automatic hardly ever gave trouble unless it was a loose input shaft nut or valve body. In 20 years I've seen maybe 5 hard part clutch failures. They would spit out a diff pin if kids abused them spinning in the rain. It's basically a manual trans with clutches adapted. It is one of the easiest transmissions to build of any car period. Come on man. I've been a Saturn tech for 20 years and that just isn't true. If a Saturn s series never skipped a 3k mile service, they would go 400k easy.
