I disagree. More detail is needed to really judge such complexed issues. Ford has good technology and access to markets. Mazda can just take what fits the best, improved it and save on R&D costs. Now Ford lost access to the Japanese market. Many models available on the European market are a good fit for the Japanese market, so Ford and American manufacturing lost on that. The same story goes for South East Asia. Ford lost an important partner, which rises business costs.

As Scotty pointed out before, SkyActiv engine got problems with its timing synch of VVT around 100,000 miles due to Mazda's evasion of VVT patents owned by Honda and Toyota while performing its VVT design for SkyActiv engine(a design flaw). The valves would collide with piston due to "mis-synch" and causing "explosion" to destroy the engine completely.

Without a doubt it was the single best car we ever owned. It was comfortable, great driving (rear wheel) and super dependable. But after 3 years and 112 thousand miles we traded it for an SUV.
