    I've seen it yesterday. I agree with everything you've said. Literally, a decent bland mediocre film. The only thing I would add is that I didn't like the colour palette. It seemed extremely lacking and the only scene where the colours were vibrant was a gag scene in the chicken coop.

    Looking back, Rapunzel wasn't even the stereotypical 'quirky' that has been repackaged before. When Eugene comes to the tower, she quickly affirms herself for a trade-off and is on the defense because she's been made to feel everything the outside world has is dangerous. She's no so much quirky as she was dangerously closed off but also desperate for freedom. What Gothelle did to her was horrible. "Quirky" (tm) now feels so stock because it comes off as if the writers think any other personality type isn't strong or affirming enough, that this is the only base a female character can have to be independent from the start, creating more of an unbreakable mold than the one they claim to be trying to break. I think Anna was the start of annoying quirkiness because even as I've gone back to Frozen, her personality felt grating and as if something was missing and they only choose quirkiness to make her seem 'cute'.

    I never understood why the movie started writing Magnifico as a sympathetic villain only for them to back pedal and turn him full on evil with no redeeming qualities. I found myself agreeing more with Magnifico points rather than Ashas. Some wishes shouldnt be granted. I think the movie would have been better if Asha was written as a protagonist who is in the wrong. People tend to forget that protagonist does not equate to being the good guy

    The movie is hella mid. Not hot garbage. Not even good. Just mid AF. The 50 percent score for reviews is quite accurate. Also, this movie really dropped the ball with showing any sense of depth. They could have had the king turn out to be "right" that he had to keep some wishes from ever coming true (imagine if there was a guy or gal who had wishes that could hurt people, or steal from people or whatever). Nope. Everyone had good wishes, and those wishes all could come true together flawlessly without any conflict at all. I legit was hoping the movie would try to be daring and show that Asha was "wrong," and that the king could redeem himself as a character by teaching Asha a lesson that the wishes can't all be granted. Nope. He ended up being a cartoonishly evil guy. Nice job, Disney. Also, most of the songs sucked ass. The animation wasn't the best (seriously, not good when night shots in a film can hide flaws).

    Yep, imagine an extreme feminist or incel wishes that the opposite gender disappears.... Or a religious extremist wishing all followers of other religions were gone. Or someone with a grudge wishing death on the person. You can go listing wishes which must NOT be fulfilled for days. Imho, looking at it logically, if you want a stable society, most of people's wishes should not magically happen, and will not practically happen.

    They really seem to have a problem integrating the concept of "Wishes" into the story despite its title. The wishes are just MacGuffins. You can literally just replace it with anything and the story would still work with a few adjustments. Like Asha and Magnifico could essentially just be fighting over gold, or a magical artifact or something. Turning what is supposed to be the core of the story into a MacGuffin is just a bad decision. It results into everything else in the story to have a very weak foundation (like the conflict between Asha and Magnifico and their motivations) or just tacked on (the theme/lesson). They could have made the wishes more integral to the story than just something the protagonist and antagonist fight over.

    it would actually be a lot more relatable to people if it were something tangible like gold (donations being embezzled for a good purpose maybe?) or food (the town is hungry but the king is fat in his castle, eating to his heart's content.) They could then use that to make the villain a bit more relatable. Why does he NEED the gold/food? Does he have a gambling addition? Is he fat because his parents didn't love him? Did he find a baby dragon, who is getting bigger, so he needed more food, but to get it he had to have the not so baby dragon scare the town into giving him money to "scare" the dragon off? Something deeper than "I just like to hold these wish things because.... just because". Even a comment on political rulers or social media or other "gatekeepers" keeping things "for the peoples' own good" would be interesting if done WELL. This wasn't.

    Maybe this idea is a bit abstract but I think it would've been better if the wishes were not just some generic "I wish for a new car" nonsense, but rather they're the people's souls or spirits, the very essence/drive which keeps them living, so when they're handing them over to Magnifico after turning 18, they're really giving them their lives and he quite literally holds them in the palm of his hand. This makes it so that when he crushes the wishes, it kills them and he draws power from their life force like a leech sucking blood. This could further emphasize Magnifico's narcissism, empowering himself by draining the life of his own people, along with Asha's point about people's wishes being "the most beautiful part of themselves."

  • @rosverlegaspo6752

    @rosverlegaspo6752

    7 ай бұрын

    @@colbystearns5238 It is bit better that way because the there are terrible consequence that increase the stakes, but it is just that, increase the stakes; it still doesn't resolve the issue that the Wishes are still McGuffins and has no real intrinsic value. The conflict and story still doesn't really connect to what Wishes are other than that is what the characters are fighting over. Not to mention, Wishes aren't souls or the very essence that which keep them living. The connection is nothing but just contrivance and just end up muddling the message/theme even more because we aren't really dealing with Wishes at all anymore.

    Tbh Anna fits more in the QPD than Rapunzel. Anna's official description of her hobbies is that she loves "talking to the portraits on the wall and eating desserts" which perfectly fits in "I am cute because omg lol I am so random and awkward xD". QPD girls feel artificial. Rapnuzel on the other hand feels more like a real person. I can clearly describe her that she loves many things in life but her main hobby is drawing. She is indeed socially awkward but it's because she is a shut-in who lived her life with an abusive mother figure. So the only thing that makes Rapunzel resonate with QPD girls is just part of her character development, she adapts and becomes more brave and assertive throughout the movie. I think modern princesses like Rapnuzel and Moana are miles ahead of Anna and Asha when it comes to personality and character's personality development. Great video btw! Just wanted to share my two cents about Rapnuzel. Tangled and Moana were truly the last two disney princess movies I've enjoyed wholeheartedly.

    I thought I wanted to see this, until I learned the villain's motive and thought it was actually quite positive. He doesn't want to grant everybody's wishes because he wants to do what he thinks is best for the kingdom. After years of Disney giving us twist villains, they now give us one that is actually the good guy.

  • @puffpuffpassmako
    @puffpuffpassmako8 ай бұрын

    Agter seeing the movie and seeing how disappointing of a villain he was im gonna rewrite him. But not as a villain. But as an antagonist. Ill even rewrite the plot to fit it Magnifico actually does care about his people amd genuinely wants to help. But there are some wishes he absolutely cannot grant. After hearing Asha's grandfather wish for inspiring people, he refuses. Asha begs and pleads and argues with him. So Magnifico says "You want to see what consequences look like? Fine. Wish granted". And he actually does it. Asha then wakes up in a dystopian town with the place all in shambles and turmoil. And magnifico is nowhere to be found. Asha goes on a journey to find what happened and why everything is in chaos. Eventually she finds out that the townspeople DID get inspired but many selfishly twisted grandfather's words and spewed horrid lies and propaganda to the point the original meaning got lost and everything fell apart. Asha finds out her grandfather passed away in shame and regretting his wish. Eventually Magnifico returns to her and explains everything. He granted the wish to show her how hard his job is. He then reveals that he did this exact thing for another person: himself. Magnifico used to have a family but they sadly passed after the kingdom was invaded years ago. So he learned magic and wish granting to bring them back. When he finally mastered it he wished for his family back. But...when they showed up at his doorstep they were...unrecognizable. I'll keep it vague to what he saw but it horrified him to where he undid it and vowed to keep the wishes in order. He then tells Asha that no matter what we want in life and how much we think we need it, there are some wishes that cannot be granted and we have to make due with what we have as wishes are not for an easy way out for life. Asha says she understands and asks for her wish to be undone. Magnifico puts everything back to normal and everything is okay again. Magnifico then tells asha that she has to break the news to her grandfather that he cant have his wish. Asha tells him and...the grandfather understands. In the end its revealed the grandfather DID inspire people without a wish. Instead of music, he found his true calling as an author and the people love his books. The people then realize they dont need wishes anymore and choose to live life without an easy option which makes the town even happier and more together. The final scene shows magnifico smiling in his castle and locking away all the leftover wishes no one needs anymore and says "Im so proud of them" before the movie ends

They said it was supposed to be the origin story of *when you wish upon a star* Which is the song from *Pinnochio* and it would’ve tied together the whole beginning of that song & of Disney’s message of dreams and wishes. I haven't even seen the movie, but I watched another reviewer who went into the grandpa's wish. A much, MUCH better story that would give some character development as well as emotional element, plus give the main character some sort or goal, plus tie in the town singing, would've have been if the grandfather died. Spoilers His wish was that he wanted to leave behind a legacy that would influence future generations. He, for some reason, wanted to do that via song/music Now, imagine Asha (?) realizing that her dying grandfather's wish was stolen and not going to be made. So, out of pure emotion, she takes the wish so she can give it back/have it granted. Maybe on a quest to take it to the wishing star (sense of adventure) King finds out, loses his shit, goes evil king mode, has family arrested or something because he thinks they're harboring her/fears the wish aftermath, etc Asha(?) Comes back home with the star to find out and to realize her family has been arrested and/or grandpa passed. King is evil. Everyone is hopeless. Then BAM. Realizes they can break the kings evil magic curse thing by joining forces and singing I guess (spirit, love, other cliche Disney anti evil trope). Maybe she sings a song her grandpa always sung to her when she was young during challenging times. Great! Now we tied in his musical past and it's significance. And what's this? His wish essentially came true, showing that the people have had the power to make their own wishes come true all along. Amazing .

    We were robbed. What would’ve worked more was if the king and queen were both evil and Asha was their daughter. Then Asha would’ve grown up thinking that keeping the wishes was the right thing and star boy had to help show her the right way. Also it would add a lot more to Asha’s character by standing against her parents since for all the other Disney princesses with evil parents they’re always stepparents (Lady Tremaine, Evil Queen, and Gothel). So the fact that a princesses actual parents are evil would’ve been so cool. I get wanting villains that are evil just to be evil back but Magnifico being a sympathetic villain would make more sense. Like due to a traumatic event he is now so obsessed with keeping everyone safe. Also I wouldn't make Asha quirky I mean she can definitely have somethings but not as much as they did. I would make her more similar to Elsa and Mulan personality rather than Anna and Rapunzel. I would also change Asha's color palette purple reminds me too much of Rapunzel and Isabella. I wish they stuck with the orange red color palette from the concept art They should've shown the effects of people forgetting their wishes like have everyone feel miserable and empty in a way Also it’s funny how they scrapped star boy but kept the obvious love song in the movie. The demo for At All Cost even has the words love you but they changed it to promise in the movie.

    It seems like they took all the bad parts in recent disney movies and mixed it into one, all the bad ideas, supercifial choices. I haven't seen it but I feel like it's gonna be that way, like watching a live action disney movie remake, lacking "soul" and bland but made into an animated one

    I agree with you 100%. It felt like a Disney propaganda done by AI. The style needs to be developed more, the story made no sense, the characters were bland, the music was bland. Overall it’s just watchable and a huge disappointment. Happy 100 years, Disney.

    Ya in the 2d era every princess was like the opposite of each other but then princess and the frog flopped and tangled was a HUGE hit and every since then every princess just has to be quirky (heck even raya was that brand of adorkable with her im a dragon nerd 🤪) also i really think they should have stuck with the original 2d animation they had planned because the 3d 2d thing they did looks very flat like its incomplete. Hear me out. I wish that(no pun intended) King Magifico was a twist hero. And Asha not so adorkable and was stubborn and didn’t like to be reasoned with. The ending will be the kingdom going into chaos while the wishes become true. Then a book turns the page and erases King Magifico as a villain and writes Asha instead. Then the King fixes everything while Asha is in prison she becomes more bitter and stubborn. Then there’s a sequal we’re Asha is the bad guy. (I fixed your movie disney)

    The original plan was to release the short Once Upon a Time before Wish, like Paper Wredck-It Ralph, I'm not sure why they changed their minds. But I read the novelization for Wish and did not like it. I feel that it tried to do the Encanto thing with a whole bunch of characters in Ashas' friend group, but unlike Ecnanto none of them are ones that will be treasured adn that will sell merch. I could see Antonio being bought a lot, which is why there's a good deal of merch for him. (Though admittedly Camilo barely does anything in the film, and when he DOES, he usually aears as a different character, which is probably why you dont' see much of him on shelves, and of course Isabela and Mirabel are the big hitters.) Heck even the parents in Encanto are charming. Both sets. I have also heard three of the songs on Vevo, including King Magnifico's, and I dislike all of them. In soe Disney films, I might not be on board with a song or two, though in Frozen I like all of them aside from Kristoffs, which hardly counts anyway, and the troll one as well as Olfas definitely took a little getting used to, but I still like those. Encanto however, has one I really dislike, but the rest are good. I have to skip "Surface Pressure" when I watch. I feel like Wish is the official death of Disney animation though. I already heard htat Frozen 3 is going to be cheaply made, so the animation will likely look ridiculous. But that doesnt matter. I was majorly turned off by the second on, what they did to Anna is unforgivable. Sword Art Online did the same to Leafa, my favorite character from that, but I didnt make it that far because Kirito ws interacting with AI characters which meant nothing mattered anymore in that anime.

    Since I saw trailers for Wish I’ve been thinking about Twisted by starkid and it’s very aggressive look at Disney/ Wishes/ dream a little harder/ things will go your way/ just be good/ and if your evil the story is twisted you’re just labeled as just horrific and flat without any dimension. I feel like wish fell so hard because it can’t even have a discussion about villians that a 2013 fan made musical can have have. I felt like Aladdin vs Wish is a great comparison and nice to see them compared to everyone else who feel like referencing encanto or Moana - I feel like it’s weird no one has talked about Princess and the Frog and wishes being granted and how that’s skewed in the story vs how things are portrayed in this story. You have a very basic story kissing a magic frog and having some actual depth and actual stakes in how those characters live and fall in love with eachother and the world they live in…: more so then there feels in Wish. There just a lack of wanting or I wish songs and actual emotion and efforts put towards that wish/dream. The king is bad defeat the king anyone can dream and have wishes. But it feels flat The king is bad defeat the king anyone can dream and have wishes. But it feels flat. Maybe that’s why I’m thinking of twisted so much because a a knockoff musical can somehow discuss that topic better then the actual brand

    Everything with Disney has become an algorithmic, formulaic, gimmick; totally lacking in creativity, heart, and art direction. Disney has stopped trying to tell good stories and instead using a "give coin, receive cookie" approach to its work. Turns out, bleeding creatives for years in a revolving-door, toxic, corporate-led culture *does* have a negative impact on the resultant work of an animation studio.

    What i hoped the movie would get into was the death of Asha's father. Maybe his wish was the one where the King had to use dark magic, and in some way the King caused her father's death. Maybe at that point, Asha's wish would be something that had to do with her father so when it was taken away, she didn't remember. Hell, even the King taking away his OWN wish for the good of his kingdom would have be interesting. I heard someone else say that making Asha the King's apprentice FIRST would have helped to make that more emotional connection. Or if the King and her father would have been friends, and built up the kingdom together. So Asha had a father figure in the King when her father died. It would have made the King's fall to evil way more impactful. Villains really only work super well when they are the good guys in their own story. Also them changing Star from a Star boy in the concept art was such a horrible choice 😭

    If they wanted to make Magnifico actually evil, he could have hurt Asha's friends and family by giving her what she thinks she wants. He gives her grandfather and mother back their wishes, like she askes, and in despair her grandfather passes away and her mother's wish (which we never see for some reason) is impossible. She wished for someone she loves who died to come back, because she knows she'll forget the pain, and then the mother is out of the story mourning all over again. Reel Asha in, saying maybe she's right, and give her the option to grant a "harmless" wish. Make Dahlia or one of the other girls the victim of an actual bad wish...But allow Asha be the one to grant it. Let her grant some random man's wish to marry the girl he loves, but it's one of the girls in the group and the guy is some awful stalker or Gaston level creep. Let Asha beg to take the wish back, beg for it to be fixed, and Magnifico to wash his hands of her and actively ban her from making her own wish. Boom. Evil

    Saw it last night and it was probably the most underwhelming/ boring Disney movie I've ever seen. It started out decent but then became extremely pointless as it went along. The way the villain was handled was a complete tragedy and there was not one likeable character in the whole thing. It honestly felt like a bad/ unfunny parody of a Disney movie. Having all the Disney characters in the credits made it even worse tbh.

    did you really like asha's design? To me it looks like a generic character taken to the extreme. Look at the silhouette, literally a straight line. Colors? entire dress is just purple. Detail? Less than most NPCs in a video game. Hair style? just straight hair (bit of texture if you look really really close i guess). If i designed a character like this for any purpose I'd be fired as a concept artist so fast. Even for a nameless NPC, at least add a bit of white to the dress to give it some contrast, damn.

    I didn't like The one about the Irish princess. I can't recall it exactly, but the message I got was be nice to your kids or they will turn you into a bear. The whole second half of the movie reminded me of Bugs and Daffy running from Elmer Fudd. And the princess could only choose between two losers. I didn't like Rapunzel. Hair that glows when you sing? Too unbelievable even for a cartoon fairy tale. My daughter said Anastasia was a bomb: any time anyone had a feeling, they had to sing about it. The Disney of yesteryear took a CLASSIC, BELOVED story, that has already stood the test of time, and then animated it in such a way that we were transported into the story. Today's Disney thinks you can cut and paste a formula together and it should work.
