As recent as 5 years ago, CA COULD have made an excellent Medieval 3. We only need to go back to Three Kingdoms in 2019 to see a game that (in records mode) would absolutely slap if it had the same setting as Medieval 2. I completely agree with you.

It seems many developers are not producing games we the fans want. Look at both BioWare and Blizzards decline. CA as it’s currently constructed doesn’t want to make these historical games. Star Wars is another IP that in my opinion has been completely destroyed. Our only hope I believe is in the moding community. I for one have been waiting for dawn less days since its inception. It’s been almost 10 years in development and is close to a campaign release.

what about a medieval2 remastered with more death animations ? a med 2 with a chosen (or maybe 2 - 3 mod ) at release? I means still no leak about a medieval 3 , at that means another maybe 3 years without one, let ferral bring the same thing to RTW but now with review of what did not work at release of RTW remastered.

Asking Creative Assembly to make Medieval 3 is like asking barbarian peasants to fight urban cohorts. If enough of us pressure CA, then maybe we can win.

Because we have Attila mods that actually can be considewred Medieval 3, but with its flaws. And you could not expect anything better than MK1212 offers from a CA.

Sorry, but I'm going to grumble. I don't know about you, but I don't want CA to make Medieval 3 now, let's look at Pharaoh. Is this a good game? If CA made Medieval today, I'm afraid it would be mediocre at best. It is very unlikely that it will be as great as Med 2 and let's face it, expectations are huge.

It would still likely be better than Medieval 2 by the virtue of having much better pathing and quality of life features. Nothing can match the legacy and importance of Rome and Medieval 2 at launch, but I think these games are really dated and even the medicore newer ones are still better if you're being honest.

Agreed. Historical titles have a BIG potential player base. I will die on the hill that Medieval 3 would print money even more than Rome 2 did as long as it looks halfway decent. Like you said, Manor Lords absolutely popped off and it's a AA game. The thirst for this type of game is real. Pharaoh failed spectacularly for a multitude of reasons. Yes, the setting is one of them, but I believe that if the game launched with the huge map and features we're getting later this year, and if it was marketed properly it would have performed much better. But yeah, there's no question that the setting is niche and even if the stars aligned it would never have been as popular as a Medieval 3 or an Empire 2.

That's the naivest thing to have hope on CA.They are death Termie,they died in 2016. Is 100% that developers changed because of Attilas "failure"(actually attila was great but the majority don't understand that).They hired another people,so waiting for Games like old Total wars is actually naive.

Watch them do a CK3 and say that the game doesn't need naval combat because "in the middle ages there was not a lot of naval combat" and have your troops spawn a boat under their feet when on sea.

Total War: Medieval Asia is what I want. Medieval Asia, spanning from Asia Minor to the Middle East, to India, to Indonesia, to China and Japan, as well as Mongolia, is far more diverse than Europe based Medieval TW game. Plus the Silk Road, the discovery of gunpowder, Chinggis Khaan's conquests etc...

Exactly true. We need Medieval 3, but it needs to be cleansed from their Warhammer Total War stamp. Pharaoh and Troy especially feel like Warhammer offshoots more then like historical offshoots. Three Kingdoms was a great evolution of historical genre, even though it was heavily rominticized. It's mechanics were great fit for Han China period and it brought many things, that felt different but made sense within that settings. Specialized retinues, character's relationships, enhanced diplomacy, spies and infiltrators, servicable characters, coloured economy, the beautiful reform's tree... What we need is Medieval 3 to be build from the foundations of Medieval 2 and for it to bring such an innovative degree to its european cultures, as the Three Kingdoms brought for Chinese setting.

Great analysis, as always. You seem to have a clear and comprehensive vision of the game, the franchise, the industry, the market. I sincerely admire your dedication to these topics.

The issue with the historical series is that the strictly historical modes really blend together gameplay-wise. After you take out the mythos from Troy, or the Romance from Three Kingdoms, what you're left with is Britannia or Rome 2 with different flavours and skins. Not that it couldn't be great, but I wonder if their sales data shows there is a decline for this sort of gameplay, and by the inclusion of Romance and Mythos modes, it tells me that the Warhammer side of things is likely winning and appealing to players more and that a pure historical game is not selling with players. For this reason, if Medieval 3 would ever to be made, you'd have to have mode that focuses on characters like King Arthur, Robin Hood, and have weapons like Excalibur, Lance of Longinus, etc. and have quests for the Holy Grail and this sort of thing.

Id be interested in some new battle mechanics. Organizing armies under field commanders as your investment in military goes up. And unit behaviors that impact their battlefield effeciency as significantly as their stats.

Basically the thing they should do is only changing the engine, and make a carbon copy of medieval 2 adding literally all those features in that new engine. THEN add things up in it gradually. If I gotta say why medieval 2 is still a hit and what medieval 3 needs in one word that is "COMPLEXITY".

Hi termi I do not know how to reach the modders of "Empire Total War 2" So can you please convey my one message to them. When I played a Maratha campaign in ETW2 mod my infantry units were doing something weird. When firing they were all laying down flat on the ground and shooting. Yes all laid down flat on the ground and firing their muskets. I do not know is this a glitch or some option which I forget to keep off... do not know. But can you please convey the modders what issue I have faced and they might do something about it... thank you.

But i agree with you. I havent play twm2 as much as rome 1 and 2. They just need to do an empire 2. They could put the time setting in the same era, a bit earlier or a bit after the napoleonic wars. Take the same old map. Make it more detailed, add africa and rework the roster and bugs (maybe even just use the napoleon game as base.) And it would be a great base for a new and fun game

Only imagine what battles could be recreated in a Medieval 3 game. It would be awesome if it had HD graphics, new cinematic combat, realistic animations, and realistic models of warriors, at least like in manor lords. It would be fantastic. TheTerminator, what factions would you play in such a game?

They would need a new engine for MED 3 and it is too late for that. The current engine has required CA to continuously remove old features (naval battles, facility trees, unique factions/culture variety etc) to accommodate new ones which shows that the decade old engine they continue exploiting to this day is on the edge of it technical capabilities, not to mention decade old spaghettis code from countless devs who came and went, all of them doing their bare minimal effort so it is all just Held together with duct tape and provides at least an illusion of a cohesive game from a "reputed" developer

I'd wish a Medieval III with more CH3 elements, Generals with very different attack styles (not the same AI style every time) maps with more maneuvering so with more space for spatial mistakes, scouting, and little hills to hide behind of defend from, castles you can walk in, fight in, and kingdoms collapsing more often when expanded too fast too big,.

I agree with other sentiments in thinking they should just do a Medieval II remastered and let the moders have at it. I am totally turned off by the Warhammer series and I like Troy/Pharaoh and I believe they should have been one game with old Total War mechanics. Just release the full mod tools at this point and go off into your Warhammer paradise CA and leave us serious gamers to our own devices. Troy should have been a game similar to Rome II and Pharaoh should have been an Atilla continuation or DLC to continue the Bronze Age.

M3 will be moot without East Asia. You already have at least 4 main Asian factions with Song, Liao, Jin, Mongols, the first which is politically declining but yet way ahead of everyone in terms of economy and technology. Then you get the Mongols, whoa re well, the mongols. The showdown between this two is already epic beyond proportions compared to the crusades and what not, with their war lasting for 49 years straight, the longest of any during the mongol invasions.

the problem with CA is that they have the ingredients they just forgot the recipe. a lot of studios still search for the right ingredients when making a game because they dont have the experience. CA has it but they forgot how to do it thats the truth. they now prefer fantasy epic games with pretty visuals and handheld games. SHogun was a game that could destroy you but it was so fun. medieval is a game that i would never forget,it was my childhood and a history student back then it was so delicous. i miss medieval

I would take all most anything for a full historical title but would prefer Empire2 something with muskets and cannons! Have given up really but i would have thought it would be easier to build on past games as TheTerminator said in the video. CA always seemed to say they have two teams but the historical side seems to have been side-lined for IP like WarHammer and now 40K/Star Wars. WW1 dont hate the idea but seems to have run into development trouble (not unexpectedly), as its so different in terms of how the game will run in practice, an updated previous game with the right marketing would surely bring in much need hype and revenue. There clearly is still a massive audience for these types of games i know Manor Lords is different but imagine a TW game with the battles and the world building element (although not quite as in-depth as other world builders), it would be massive!

I honestly doubt we'll ever get another historical total war. They seem really set on doing WW1. I know I'm alone here but I'd prefer it as a 'focused saga title' as really that is the only way it could follow a format that resembles anything close to traditional total war, they could handpick specific periods and locations where the variability could be contextually grounded in history whilst matching the format of traditional total war. If it's world wide though there's going to be disparity all over the place and people will bitch left right and centre that 'what's the point of having this if we can't use it' not understanding that WW1 globally looked vastly different all over the place.

And to think that there are only 2 years left until Medieval II celebrates its 20th anniversary!!! And there's no sign of Medieval III on the horizon! 😡

Medieval 3 is What we want

I have been asking for Med3 or Empire 2 for nearly a decade now. The real question is do we want to wait till a new engine comes out and do we want one of those games to be the first to try a new engine. I prefer waiting 2-3 more years for a great game on a new engine then a mediocre one right now

I am so thankful for Manor Lords, I love the game & it's promising future. Total War is dead. It had it's time, 20 years ago. I can finally let it ago with peace of mind. RIP TW.

Unfortunately I think CA won’t be making a medieval 3 anytime soon, maybe I’m proven wrong as i think they have thought of it but just depends on the decision making but tends to be popular fantasy franchise such as Warhammer 40K and if they make a Star Wars, if done right it can earn them a lot of money from the Star Wars fan base , I would want a Victorian era and it can have expansions such as US Civil War , I hope CA has learnt not to make saga based games especially at full game price and don’t rush into launch either , that’s why Europa universalis 5 has its dev diaries but will be a long time before official announcement and then eventually its release

They just have to make MTW with the features of Shogun 2 and the bugs removed, and improve the graphics slightly (really, only the boxy horse heads need improving). They could call it MTW2 Remastered, and that would be perfect, as I suspect that MTW3 will be dumbed down.

I feel you on Warhammer; flying units never should have been introduced before they were ready. Yet, we had to watch those gimpy seahorse looking units grope a ground unit, that can't even look up, to death.

To which extent do you like punishing mechanics? I'm just curious because I'm all for punishing mechanics as long as the game is fun. E.g. a boss fight with poor hitbox animations isn't very fun.

Manor Lords is the work of one man's passion. The only motivation of making Total War games is money. I'm also really looking forward to MTW3, but I won't buy it if it turns out to be rubbish like RTW2 was. The last proper historical Total War game was Empire Total War. Since then, the production company and the business world have only become more greedy and unscrupulous.

Would a Medieval 3 be successful? You said it yourself, if done right, yes. But in its current state i doubt CA would do it right, and let's not forget that the expectations about a hypothetical M3 are huge, so no matter what they do people will be disappointed. Unless they radically change something, if CA in its current state launched the game today, it will be probably little more than a reskin of Warhammer without fantasy elements.

Why should they do? With the last DLC we saw the mechanics that effect warhammer fans. CA just buttered them up a little and gave them some new skins. That's all you need to satisfy them. Compare that to the effort you had to cause for the development of a Medieval 3 oder Empire 2 oder so. I mean in a classic secious way. With a historical Total war they would earn a lot of money. With warhammer they will earn even more for less effort, and with Warhammer 40K Total war at hand, they will get rich as the moghuls. Guess what they'll do.

CA needs to stay away from any WW1-2 developments, it would require to much gameplay functionality that is beyond the scope of what the total war games are designed for. That’s why we have the Hearts of Iron series, let them tackle that.

CA will never be as good as it was 12 yrs ago. I'm fairly sure the most of the devs making Total War now didn't play Medieval II or Shogun II and they couldn't make a decent successor to those games if they tried.

I'm glad that CA will some games in other franchises like the rumored Star Wars Total War before coming back to historical, the worst possible outcome is to have medieval 3 come out and have a rome 2 situation. Hopefully by the time a new historical total war gets made they will have developed a new engine and made some technical advancements.

I'd rather have medieval 2 remastered. Lets face it, CA doesn't do it anymore like they did in the early days. And i speak from the perspective of a player who started with rome 2 and warhammer 2, so no "nostalgia" to these days. Its just a fact.

I get ur point but truth be told... how?! I played nearly every total war game and as always there were 20 units vs 20 units... how u wanna bring modern/ fantasy gunwarfare into it? Cuz with that topic u would need movement while shooting (meaning bigger maps), terrain with alot of cover possiblies (with 20 units each + reinforcements u need alot) last but not least, space fights and spacefights with landbattles. And if u already played Rome 2 or Attila TW , they already suck with naval battles
