    If using ku band LNB, i probably use it to watch western Paid TV, for example Cartoon Network. (Measat 3b) If using C band LNB, My dad use it to watch all Eastern islamic TV. (Telkom 4) Good thing our receiver is hybrid, meaning it can get all TVs.

    I have enjoyed C band since 1985. You needed a VIDEOCIPHER unit to subscribe to channels for pennies compared to what they charge today. I moved up to DIGICIPHER about 2000 until small dish killed off commercial C band about 2015.. I removed my 10ft WINEGARD last month when they re shingled the roof. It had been unused for 5 yrs.. I dont know if it will go back up. Still have all my spare dishmovers, descramblers, and receivers that i need to sort through and toss... What a hell of a ride it was.. Those were great times and i surely miss the wildfeeds and inexpensive first generation picture quality of the channels..

    When I installed them we ran the coax and polarotor cable out the other end of the hat and tied it to 1 of the 4 kegs to the edge of the dish. Re snow on dish, found that if the snow was wet , heavy it would degrade the signal in a couple of 2 ways, the weight would push the dish out of alignment a bid also change the geometry of the dish. Glad you are still interested in C band , the stories the old timers can tell about the unusual installations. We remember when HBO scrambled first, then everybody new a guy that could work on the VCll .

    My grandparents had one of these in the 80's and 90's. They had channels like Galaxy 1-4, F 1-4, Telstar 1-4, and some others locations when the satellite would move. They would go by F1, G1, T1, etc. depending where it was pointed. I think the Disney channel was on G4 and I always watched Much Music, the Canadian music channel which may have been something like F3. Anybody else remember all those. They were all different satellite locations in space that it would point at.

    Thanks for the video. Boy it brings back memories. I had a big dish for years. I used to be able to get the NFL. The good news is it was for free the bad news from week to week they kept changing the transponder’s, so sometimes witness half of the game, searching for what satellite it was on. I also remember some of the networks used to send their shows some times a week ahead of time were used to watch Star Trek the next generation days early and everybody was envious of us being able to see them before they were broadcast on local TV. I imagine that kind of thing isn’t done anymore? I remember seeing CNN feeds during the gulf war, when the first bombing started, and it was quite exciting to see when nobody else was really seeing it.

    When my dad bought our former house in 1987, there was one of these in the backyard. This one was fiberglass, and was even bigger than most of the old dishes that are big. It was also one of the first ones, and as such was already outdated and didn't work, so they immediately started trying to get rid of it. In an absolutely bizarre occurrence, a few months later my dad was there by himself doing some work, and he splashed some gasoline on a huge wasp nest that was on the bottom of the dish. He then had a brilliant idea to set it on fire. He thought the nest would just burn and go out, but it caught the bottom of the dish on fire and slowly started working its way up. A few minutes later he discovered it from the terrible smell, and went to put it out. As he was going to go get the hose, some guy pulled up and told him his satellite dish was on fire! Not something you hear everyday! Needless to say my mom was not happy (they weren't married yet), but was glad he wasn't hurt and didn't get the fire department called.

    The oldest satellite dish I had was a 100 cm Parabolic KU Band dish from 1990, we used to receive analog satellite TV channels from Astra 19.2 East, even today it is the most tuned satellite in Europe. In 2018 I tested to see the signal quality on digital TV. It was very hard to mount a Universal Ku Band LNB since it was designed for 80s and 90s LNBs and in order to mount it on a mast I needed one simillar for C Band dishes (like yours in the video). And I can't install an Actuator, not even a USALS H-H motor. For Eastern Europe satellite TV in late 80s especially early 90s was something out of this world, from 1-2 channels with communist propaganda and limited broadcasting hours to a free world with movies, music, sports, documentaries. The problem was that the FTA channels are in german langauge and the ones in english are encrypted, now they are FTA on Astra 28.2 East but only on UK beam not Europe, the ones available in Europe are encrypted. But at that time it was perfect despite the fact that most of us don't speak german. I bought an Amiko Single Eco L-108 LNB it fitted perfectly the disatvantage is that the model has only one output. The masts that I use are for offset KU satellite dishes. I leaned the antenna against a strong tall tree, so I have no obstacles in front of the dish. It was a little difficult to point but in the end I had very good reception. The signal strength was between 80 - 100% depending on the transponders for HotBird 13 East and Astra satellites, and 70 - 90 % on Eutelsat satellites. In the end I decied to donate (with the LNB) to someone who collects old stuff. As for me I bought an 100 cm offest dish and an USALS H-H motor and I still use it today.

  • @NorthcoasterHobby

    @NorthcoasterHobby

    I’m not sure about HAM but if you want to try picking up FTA satellite channels, you’ll need a DVB-S2 receiver such as this: Amiko Mini HD265 HEVC H.265 Satellite TV Receiver Overview kzread.info/dash/bejne/f6R8y9qvlcrKY84.html Amiko Satellite Receiver Tutorials kzread.info/head/PLDX6gLCL4WMzwD6o3jf7SjrLByiL2VlU3 Note however that this receiver (or any FTA receiver these days) does not have the capability of moving a C-band dish actuator. A separate dish mover (or older analog receiver) would be needed to drive the dish around the geostationary arc. The dish can also be manually adjusted, though.

    Generally I find in my area C band dishes are not installed into the ground. Almost every dish I have encountered is bolted to a precast cement pad surface that is set into the ground. But generally speaking if you are going to sink a post it has to be below the frost line in your area. Here in Canada where I live the frost goes down 4 feet into the soil. If it is installed above that then the frost will push the post out of the ground instead of moving freely around it. And the post will need some sort of perpendicular steel cross bar installed through it at the bottom to prevent it from turning in the ground, as well as being set in cement, probably at least 2 feet diameter I would think. But there are various methods used. I think there’s easier ways to install a C band dish besides burying it in cement, at least where I live. In a high wind or hurricane zone, it’s another matter entirely. I’m lucky to live in an area with relatively low winds and stable ground that does not shift at all. So I devised my own method of installing my dishes: The C Band Satellite Dishes I use for Free Satellite TV kzread.info/dash/bejne/dZ2kxJOiqca-oqQ.html

    @@NorthcoasterHobby I don't think C band was ever very big in the UK... There was a guy here called Steve birkhill, an engineer at the time, who built his own receiver, and had a massive dish in his back garden! This was the early eighties. Popular in the UK, in the mid to late 80's was a television standard called 'mac' which was viewable with the right decoder 😵‍💫 it's interesting to note, that d/d2 mac, was only really intended for the Scandinavian market, but there were more decoders in the UK (some 300,000) apparently, than in Norway, Sweden and Denmark combined... This was all available on 0.7/1° west. I still also have all my receivers, one of them, an echostar LT8700, still works perfectly... Had two scart sockets on the back, I don't think scart was available in the states??? 🤔 And the master of them all, the chaparral Monterey, which when fully loaded with all the add ons would set you back £2500. 😬 Happy days. Now you can pick up a cheap Chinese box for under £100! How times have changed... They were happy days with this hobby. Cheers 🍻

    The original satellite boxes are much more common than the antennas in the USA. They are large steel flat cases built like a brick shithouse. They look like they do something. They always come with an open rear slot and a plastic caged descrambler. There are lots of screw connections on the back. Sometimes you find a similar built box, and it is the aiming controller. Rarely, you find a remote control. I'm not totally sure , but I think analog C band is extinct.

    I don't know if it was you northcoaster, but, I heard why people used C band dishes in the 1970s and maybe 1980s or around that time was because the average TV user found out that the downlink from the satellites from space back to earth that went to cable companies weren't scrambled and so they (the average TV viewer) put up the dishes to recieve the signals.

  • @NorthcoasterHobby

    I’ve mentioned that unencrypted satellite channels can be received with the right equipment. If broadcasters really didn’t want people receiving those channels they can use one of many encryption methods. Free satellite TV exists even today (fortunately!). As for the original point you stated, that is certainly true about signals back in the 80’s but I cannot take credit for being the first one to say it!😄📡

    You say free to air, but today is it still possible to get cable or pay tv with them? I grew up in the 80s and I had a friend that had a c-band dish and that was about the time that all channels were getting scrambled, so he did have a descrambler. Assuming it was a legal descrambler how did they work would you need one for every channel you wanted and who did you contact if you wanted hbo or showtime and what about payperview? If it wasn't legal how did those work in a way that allowed, you to get all the channels?

    In warmer latitudes, metals corrode much faster. All the genuine C band dishes I have found, were ruined. Some had steel mesh or square pipe, and most had plain steel nuts and bolts hopelessly rusted into unrecognisable shapes. Try knocking on someone's door. You're like 80 percent likely to be turned down and for every reason in the universe. There is such thing as holding on too tight, and there is finding and adapting surplus dishes. Contractors never carry them down ladders. They throw them side or face down.
