It is great to see EV trip planning done like this, with conservative estimates of energy consumption. That way you are usually pleasantly surprised when you can drive faster as your estimated SOC at arrival goes up. Planning for success with a reasonable reserve energy at arrival, vs. for a nail-biter video that generates clicks, is the way to do it right. It is a pleasure to watch Transport Evolved to do it right.

Interesting video, your vehicle did quite well by you using some common sense. In years past I did quite a bit of towing with a powerful Ford wagon and camping trailer, the vehicle could easily tow at posted speeds but the effect on fuel economy was substantial. By reducing speed to about 55 MPH the savings were on the order of 35% compared to driving 70 MPH. Yes it took a bit more to to get to destinations but it was not overly annoying, the more relaxed pace made driving easier and less fatiguing and required fewer stops. The reduction of fuel stops almost made up the speed differential when it was all said and done. Have a safe and fun trip and thank you for sharing your experiences.

Great work! This is how to do an EV review: a real world road trip and put it though what life throws at it. At the end, could you give a summary of the charging cost and distance? How long did you have to wait at each charge stop and how often? What features of the truck surprised you the most that everyday driving didn’t really show off (ie how easy was it to hitch the trailer, seat comfort, how well the cabin kept temperature, etc..)

The fact that you are still absolutely in love with this truck doing one of the most miserable things there is to do in a truck is just really encouraging. And 1.7 kW-per-mile... TOWING??? This shows the genius of Ford advertising the EPA range and efficiency based on a fully loaded truck. Its getting even better efficiecy towing a decent sized load than its quoted EPA numbers. Brilliant. FYI: all of the ads on this video were for the F150 Lightning, or Fords training program for its new service centers. Ford actually using their advertising dollars SMARTLY.

  • @brucec954

Yeah, most small trailers, especially rentals, have small diameter wheels and are not rated to go over 60 mph. In California, they have speed limit signs saying 55 mph max for vehicles towing. So doing 50 - 55 mph not really much slower than what you should be driving. Of course, you see plenty of macho pickups driving much faster towing, but you also see a lot of trailers on the side of the road with blown out tires. I passed an accident scene the other day in the boonies that had a pickup & trailer that were both on their side from a tire blowing out, the trailer swerving, flipping the pickup and trailer. Must have been a fun ride.

I’ve driven this route a half dozen times decades ago and it’s wonderful to experience it again, vicariously. Back in the day I had breakdowns driving a 1971 Volvo 145. Oddly I also made the trip once from Portland to Boulder towing my Kawasaki EX500 motorcycle on a little 4x8 trailer with a 1986 Isuzu I-Mark, which was such a bad tow vehicle that I had to pull over and stop halfway up that big hill on I-84 to let the poor little engine cool down. After that I drove with the windows open and the heat blowing just to dump heat from the engine and keep temps down even though it was late spring and I’d have preferred cool air (my memory is fuzzy but I’m pretty sure that car didn’t have AC 😂). Seeing how wonderful Adera Tull is by comparison to my admittedly ancient towing experience shows what an amazingly competent machine it is. It’s truly staggering the amount of progress made and I look forward to watching this series! Oh and thank you for standing by your convictions.

With the Subaru be a lot more aerodynamic than a box, that is where the surprising efficiency came from. I believe Ford said that the software would constantly be updated from real-world experiences. Hopefully this road trip lessons got uploaded.

For real, a lot of states have laws against towing that fast in the first place, and most of the people I know with experience towing won't go over about 55, that being said I'm guessing how heavy the F-150 Lightning is gives people extra confidence to go faster in the first place. Either way look at the big rigs around you you should be doing the speed they're doing I guarantee they have more experience than you do probably, and a better tow rig. And then there's always someone popping up with a made-up scenario like "I pull my 10,000 lb 53 ft camper across the country uphill both ways, with an 85 mile an hour headwind, Non-Stop without sleep 15 times a year this truck won't work for anybody in America".

@@xsterawesome I recently watched the TFL trip to Alaska. If you put a big box on it, and drive fast, it burns through the juice. Slow down, and it does much better. This video tells me a whole lot of people will be able to drag their boat to a nearby lake. Also, big boat launches should get chargers. These trucks seem very stable and very powerful, so while I have no doubt a diesel with giant fuel tanks can go farther, for a shorter haul, these Lightnings will be fantastic.

As others have said, aerodynamics play a substantially bigger role in efficiency than weight. Weight only matters when facing gradients or stop/go. You’ll lose some efficiency from the additional tires and bearings dragging the truck down too, but a relatively small amount compared to aero drag. A flat car trailer with a pretty small car doesn’t present that much aero drag (until it gets windy). I’m familiar with that section of I84 (just drove it last winter in my Bolt, properly equipped with Nordic winter tires, then again this spring in my former Model 3) and aside from one big climb, it’s relatively flat by PNW standards. I’m glad you are doing this test because the vast majority of “towing tests” that I’ve seen with EV trucks are by people who are unapologetically biased against EVs, and even though they practically never need to tow long distances, they come up with some absurd test to attempt to show that “EV trucks just don’t work!” I know this probably isn’t the ideal place to ask this, but are you all going to have a booth at Fully Charged or just wandering around doing coverage?

That sounds about right for a Tesla destination charger. Tesla destination chargers support some form of charge sharing. Any place that has more then one likely uses charge sharing. I have seen Tesla destination chargers with as little 3K because the owner of the restaurant decided to share 3 chargers on one circuit. My guess is that hotel might be sharing 64 usable amps between two connectors.

Great road trip! I regularly travel an 800km (500m) return trip towing a tandem trailer. I find that if I don’t push the throttle and keep below 100km/hr my fuel economy is not much worse than when not towing. This comes down to wind resistance. To ‘hypermile’ 80km/hr (50mph) seems to be the magic speed. Just got to get the charging network up to speed (pardon the pun). I salute you guys for your stance against state-sanctioned intolerance.

Where does the Tesla get the extra power to charge at 6kw? Does it plug into a different power source? Q2 - Re. the towing efficiency. Would you consider, over time, putting together a comparison of it towing different shape and weight trailers? The car might have been an unusually aerodynamic load? The charging inlet on the Bolt used to be a bit too flexible and the weight of the cable would often cause charging errors... We've not tried the new Bolt to see if this is still a problem tho'. There's a 3d printable aftermarket part that resolves this problem if that does work for you. ^Kate

I don't know if Nikki has towed a similar load with a gas F150 or 1500 to compare. I've towed a similar car on that exact same U-haul trailer with a 5.7L 1500. I can tell you firsthand going uphill on the freeway through the mountains, you aren't doing >55mph because the truck won't do it, not enough horsepower. Only thing to do is go 45-50 in the right lane and keep pace with the big rigs. It would also be nice to know if she had any issues with braking, trailer sway, or a light front end causing steering issues. That U-haul trailer with surge brakes doesn't provide much braking assist and puts a lot of weight on the tow hitch. I've seen some other videos comparing the Lightning towing but they always compare to a F250 or F350 diesel, not a F150.

It seems that F150 is as aerodynamic as a brick. That would explain why the trailer is not reducing the range as much as would be expected. Mass itself makes quite a little more consumption, aerodynamics is the main thing and trailer follows so close behind the truck that it is almost completely inside the turbulence that the truck makes. My class C RV with an ICE engine averages 10 MPG at highway speed (60 mph) and when towing my Bolt I am still getting 9.8 or so. The major issue that affects my mileage while towing is the hills, not the the weight of the car and tow dolly. I just back off the speed a little going up and let her roll out on the downsides. Somebody needs to make a bed topper for the truck with solar panels on it. I estimate that that the panels could give you about 5 more miles of range for every sunny hour. On a lot of trips, that would be an extra 40 miles or so per day. While that may not seem like a lot the other use is the one I think can be more important. Imagine you use the truck to go camping or fishing for lets say 10 days to make my math easy. You drive to the lake in some remote spot, park. In 10 days of sitting the truck will get topped back up with some power taken to cook etc.

I've been thinking about that too. Unfortunately you can't charge while driving, could charge a separate battery. Also for charging the vehicle you probably have to meet the minimum charge rate which may be 10 amps, 120vac? Seems possible for that amount of roof space. I wonder if it would be a aero disadvantage to go above and over the cab with solar, if you weren't hauling. Adjustable supports would be good to go below roof line, or above load.

Doing boondocking without a trailer, would be smart to have more panels to unfold upon arrival, and a "house battery" that acts as a solar generator to plug the truck in at night. That way you could go on runs in the truck while the house battery recharges at base camp. This setup could be collapsed, with only enough panels to cover the truck bed plugged into the house battery while you drive. If you had them mounted correctly, the drag would be less than the range benefit. You'd still have to stop to recharge from the house battery, maxing out at 6.6 Kw if your system could output that much. So the system would be great for boondocking and good enough to slowly refill in an emergency (unexpected broken fast charger) on a road trip.

All you have to do is enter in which car and battery you have. I don’t know how well it would do with trailers since they are so variable. Plus it can’t predict the local wind, but otherwise seems pretty good. On my last trip, I got a 20 mile boost from an epic tailwind in Wyoming and a headwind in New Mexico made me return to the charger because I wasn’t going to make the next one. Luckily my car let me know in the first 15 minutes
