Yup! Everyone one of these era trucks here in PA has rotten rockers, cab corners, fenders, beds, etc, which means you can't even drive it on the road due to annual safety inspections...I even see 2010 era trucks rusting out around here! Its really sad given how expensive these are to buy anymore. Only way to make them last around here is to get them undercoated/oil coated as soon as you buy it, and get it re applied if you intend it to last more than 10 years without needing rust repair.

@@alaskarailroad3996 Problem isn't that they don't run. Stupid PA inspections don't permit them on the road because of the rust. I've got an 06 Envoy with a 5.3l engine...runs great, but I've had to get the frame repaired on it twice in the last 3 years just to keep it on the road, and the rust issues aren't exclusive to GM vehicles...all cars around here exhibit the same issues with rust after 10-15 years.

It was my first truck, but having been guilty of neglect at times, the truck started having problems. So, I'm at the point (as David reports) where I am rebuilding this truck, repainting it, and having great fun discovering the joy of seeing this truck come back after so many years.

Everything else has been just regular maintenance. I beat on it every day, still pulls trailers, still hauls all my stuff. I’m never gonna get rid of it. It ain’t perfect but it’s done everything I’ve ever asked of it. Some of the best trucks you can buy if you’re looking for a reliable work truck. And they go for pretty cheap still. Now with fuel mileage and emissions being the priorities engines don't seem to last as long. Which is worse for the environment: burning more gas or scrapping a ten year old vehicle?

He’s right, “You only keep a vehicle if you love driving it.” That’s why people trade so often, their lives change and a certain vehicle doesn’t fit their life or they’re just tired of it. That’s also why our faithful gray Toyota Sienna went down the road last fall. My wife was tired of driving it, and really not using it as more than a car most days. Now, she has what she really wanted...a Plum Crazy Dodge Charger. She has something she’s proud to drive and it does what we need it to. I’m not expecting to put 305,000 miles on it over the next 25 years. That’s not really what I’ve done historically.

Parker, I guess that settles it. Everyone should only drive Toyota or Honda. There’s no domestic vehicle to buy. I see running gear go bad on all the domestics before 150K. I’ve had two engine failures on Ford F-150 pickups (one at 94,000 and one at 133,000). My co-worker had his 5 year old Chevy 6.2 go bad at 62K with no warranty backing. I also see Chryslers running with 200K and no major repairs. Point being, it’s all in usage and the “luck of the draw.” In 15 years, if our Charger’s engine goes bad at 200,000 miles-who cares? It’s not likely to be my problem by then anyway. I don’t keep worn out vehicles because of my experience with a used up Chevy pickup back in the day that I spent more time fixing than driving.

High speed cornering was excellent, brakes were massive, the corporate 14-bolt rear axle was bullet proof, wind noise at speed was minimal minimal. I could go on and on. Factory stereo and 4wd actuators were a common failure point. Rust is a problem in the cab corners anywhere they salt the roads but copious amounts of zinc coated steel did help control it. All in all, a very well made truck. Especially when compared to what can go wrong on the new ones.

Really doubt any of the new trucks would last this long. Half of the features wont work by 200k miles... Everything these days is built to be disposable.

@@gnarlytothemax now your just repeating what you hear. have you ever put 200k on anything? The newest trucks, are pretty solid even ford I hate to admit. We make the most off idiots when it comes to 2020 models. just replaced full warranty motor guy drives ten miles puts gas in his diesel. happens all day. trucks dont survive idiots...

Naked Zebra yes, have put well over 200k on vehicles that’s why I’m actually concerned about longevity. I figure most buyers replace by 100k these days..

Naked Zebra I priced a new gmc 2500 gasser, it’s just north of 45k, we also don’t talk about insurance/registration... older is the way to go in my book of life.

Those GMT 400 trucks were among the best! I had 3 different ones, a 91, 92 and 97.

I had a 1991 ford f150 lariat and for some reason ford decided to put a 5 digit odometer in there instead of a 6 digit one. It did last about 150k miles but I replaced just about everything in that truck except the motor and transmission. It died around 2013

I have a 99 k series. 318000 and going up. 5.7 automatic all original. Great truck. Brakes and tires. The difference is I service the truck regularly. It’s all about how you take care of it drive it
