Not even 200 dude the Chinese make similar ones for 50 bucks, doubt a decent one would be too much more than that
Retro head units can really improve the experience wih a classic cars. I have a Retrosound Hermosa in my 1979 Cadillac Seville and I absolutely love it. It looks pretty much exactly like the original (especially when it's off), but it has all the modern fratures like USB and Bluetooth. That said, you have to be a real fan to pay $1200 for a head unit.

@@OldSchoolRu707 I have been using it for a few years now and I'm very happy with it. There are only two things would like to improve - when the unit is on, the screen is a little too bright and colorful, and there is no option for an external microphone (at least my unit didn't have one). But those are just minor nitpicks - I would buy it again without hesitation.
I like the Gatorade cap for the defroster slider….
Blaupunkt makes a similar retro unit that looks great in older German cars .
Glad you guys got that head unit! Super cool.
That’s a little pricey for us 944 guys. :)

As always great video & good job to Tommy, one of my favorite channels. 👍🏻👍🏻
I'm redoing the tired Bose system on my '02 Boxster S, but going all modern. Already picked up the amp, speakers, wiring, and double DIN housing (ditching the completely useless cup holders). Just trying to decide on a nice but not excessive head unit, but hardly anything is in stock these days. I'm keeping all the original parts though.
Great VID! Read an article about this awhile back but no VID!
That's a great oem upgrade. Curious to know if it also allows for a back up camera?
Just installed this in my 986 Boxster S. Great idea to review it.
Very cool! I wonder if someone will make similar retro looking systems-like classic Becker-looking ones for Mercedes.

It’s reasonable for ‘made by Porsche’ unfortunately.
@MichaelArtelle

Well... Reasonable for anything that's endorsed by the OEM, which means it'll carry a warranty and is atleast certified to work with the vehicle. I've seen plenty of aftermarket head units with CANBUS bypass modules that really screw up a vehicle pretty bad... especially with more modern vehicles (ahem, GM) running important CANBUS features through the head unit for some bizarre reason.
Cool, I’m gonna have to now see in they do one for my 964 🚙👍🏻 p.s. Your Porker would look cool with the flat nose conversion with pop up lights, just a thought for the future upgrades 🤔
Somebody, other than Blaupunkt($$$), needs to come out with a legit looking classic head unit.

Very good way to do retro modern cool…..I wish the Mini Cooper folks would do something like this too….
Is there a Retro Radio with Bluetooth that you would recommend for a 1987 Jeep Comanche? I've been looking for one for my MJ.
10 years ago i get cheap china radio looking like this with USB slot and MP3 capability... for only 10$ i got even pictures of it in my 1973 Fiat 126p :P
I wonder if you can reprogram it to replace the Porsche crest on startup (and, like, file off the Porsche logo or something). Because this would fit well in cars like a Jaguar XK8 or an Aston Martin DB7, where there's no way to physically fit a 2-DIN CarPlay unit or a fold-out single DIN one.
$1200 is very bad.
Will it play music from an MP3, iPod through the usb port or sd card?
What's up with the Citroen 2CV? Is it part of the TFL fleet?
LMC Truck has retro style modern radios for various classic trucks
I would go for a Blaupunkt SQR 46. Looks way more period correct, has all the modern features.. and is like a third of the price.
The Straight Pipes actually talked about it on the original Porsche review a few weeks ago.
Land Rover offer a similar unit through the JLR Classics department, it was fitted on the runout v8 editions of the previous Defender

Doesn't have CarPlay though, IIRC
Very cool!!!! But ya coulda gone for a drive amd displayed the sound.
Assuming the classic car still has the original stereo and the speakers are still decent enough to sound good, then the Anker Roav is a great upgrade for around $18. You plug it into the cigarette lighter and set it to an open FM station and then tune the radio to that station. Then you use your phone to connect to it using bluetooth. 01/29/24 followup: About 6 months ago I got a Pioneer car stereo and quit using the bluetooth cigarette lighter dongle. It does bluetooth, Pandora, Spotify, plays mp3 formatted CDs, and allows you to dial and answer the phone from the stereo. It is single DIN so it doesn't have a big screen, but it was only $99 and works well.

I have something similar in my 03 Civic. I'm not certain about the overall quality of such units, but given the price, certainly I could try out a few and still make out ahead by quite a lot, and for hands-free calling it's priceless.
@drwisdom1

@@AbsalomIndustries I have an old T100 pickup truck and it only has a CD player without mp3. The Roav works very well for both phone and music. The only flaw is you have to use the phone to dial and pickup calls. I think I am going to get a dash mount for my phone to make that easier.

Thats is sick!!!😮
Can this be installed in a 986?
the blaupunkt bremen seems like the better bang for buck unit and actually looks period correct for 600 less
THATS A CRAZY PRICE
$1200 head unit, $12 steering wheel. 😆
My Porsche classic radio far right USB port isn’t connecting and people are telling me that my classic radio might not have the car play feature
It's wild that this is *still* the only single-DIN non-fold-out CarPlay head unit out there.
Interesting- wonder if would it be less expensive without the “Porsche” logo (or no logo) on it.

Strangely it isn't. Kramer KR1C also available for Jaguar, Land Rover and Mercedes in slightly different styles.
He said the words decent value
First off, Tokyo drift was a great movie! Now if you wish to reference 2 Fast 2 Furious as a comparison for something bad then I’m ok with that.
I forgot you even had that car, it has been so long. Can't keep track of all the project cars you buy.
Personally I think those knobs take up way more space for what they do. I'd get rid of a button on each side and replace that with the knobs, the screen is just too cramped to use imo
I like that you can do this in older vehicles, it's a shame it's not a thing for the current generation. In ten to twenty years time, today's tech is going to look ridiculous but we've lost the ability to do anything about it. It's not just Porsche that have this, JLR and Mercedes have an identical ones and I think they're made by Kramer.

@@larrysmith6797 well ... Yes. I drive a 10 year old Defender and I don't lust after anything currently available for sale. At least for the next year or two the Lada Niva is available for sale in the UK!

how have we lost the ability to do anything about it? head units in modern cars are still removable so in 20 years you can take it out and swap it with a newer one, same as you can currently do with an older car. 70s tech looks absolutely ridiculous if you're living in the 90s but now many ppl consider it cool and retro, whereas others want to get rid of it for something newer. itll be the same in the future for our gen of cars

$1200? When he said reasonable I was thinking well its a Porsche unit so maybe $500 or $600. Still paying a hugh Porsche tax.
The Porsche radio is stupid expensive, don’t think it’s exactly a good value. I wanted to put one in my 86 Carrera until I saw the price.
Sorry $1200 for a radio is crazy to me.
Or... You can buy a whole new iPad and a mount and leave the actual original parts in there, and have change left over for dinner.
$1190? Pretty sure this is a refaced, rebranded Chinese made stereo unit with some UI/UX redesign so the interface looks different. But this thing shouldn't cost more than $30.
That price is sickening. That should be no more than 450USD and that includes a hefty Porsche premium.
There is nothing wrong with that steering wheel.

Does anyone else find Tommy's videos increasingly mediocre? I thought he was going to review a stereo that was generic for any older car with a single DIN stereo slot but no, this is a Porsche specific $1200 unit that is useless to 99% of his audience. I still love Andre's, Nathan's, Roman's, and even Mr. Truck's videos, but Tommy, you gotta step it up!
I'll be impressed when they bring CD players back...that compressed audio silliness sounds like crap!
