Israel's Iron Beam is the world’s first energy-based weapons system that uses a laser to shoot down incoming UAVs, rockets & mortars at a cost of $3.50 per shot. Are energy weapons becoming a viable option for modern armies?
🎬 Key Points:
📌 Iron Dome is a mobile air defense system developed by Israel to intercept short-range rockets. It has been effective but expensive.
📌 A new threat emerged in the form of small, cheap drones used by Israel's enemies.
📌 Iron Beam is a new laser weapon system being developed by Israel. It is designed to be more cost-effective than Iron Dome for shooting down drones, rockets, and mortars.
📌 Iron Beam is still under development, but it is expected to be deployed on land, sea, and air.

    The laser section of iron dome is no longer subject to weather. In short, it is guided by infrared and another still classified targeting system so the lasers can quickly and accurately point into the path of an incoming ordinance to take it out. It does not need to hit it in flight as it reads the flight path and creates the beam into that path.

    I went to Israel twice for business. The first time I was met at the door of the Askelon hotel by a gun carrying security, checking names of expected check in guest. The second time, about a year later, we had to check in into a Tel Aviv hotel, because of the increased range of the rockets. While out on a dinner with our hosts, one of them received a phone alarm, about his town being under rocket attack. At the factory, they explained that all major meeting room, were in fact capable NBC attacks shelters.

    One limitation of laser based defense systems is the very high amount of electrical energy needed per shot. Some use a bank of super capacitors, which can recharged quickly and discharged quickly in high enough amounts of energy needed. Power sources to charge systems varies from batteries to portable power generators. There are chemical based batteries that can generate electrical power by mixing chemicals. No long extension cord from power source to laser system. It is very compact and can easily be topped off with more chemicals.

  • @pwnmeisterage

    @pwnmeisterage

    Most industrial cutting lasers operate around microwave frequencies. Most radar operates around microwave frequencies. Many radio communications operate around microwave frequencies. Because the atmosphere - the air these things move through - happens to dampen, filter, scatter, and attenuate frequencies outside the microwave band. You can bet that weaponized lasers are designed to exploit the best spectra they can for performance, efficiency, and cost. Lasers aren't very useful vs reflective surfaces. So they have limited effect vs metal and polymer at distance. And they would have limited effect vs stealth materials or geometries.

    The challenges that will be considered in the future is reaction time of the system and human action because the future missiles, jets, and bombers will be travelling faster than the speed of sound (@Mach 3) with smoke screen. The next challenge is the effective range of the laser since the missiles, drones and bombers will be flying at least 4 kilometers above ground. The last challenge is when the Satellite will then be capable of firing lasers or concentrated radiation to the ground, and these will not be affected by lasers.

  • @pd28cat

    @pd28cat

    Жыл бұрын

    The first issue is the amount of self-invented nonsense in your comment. Although it is relatively easy to build and fly a Mach 3 aircraft use of this is limited as an S-400 SAM exceeds Mach 5. The second issue is "smoke screen". Is this referring to stealth or just a bunch of Hollywood stuff you watched on your living room TV? The next issue is that the service ceiling of your average airliner is around 13 km up, and the maximum intercept altitude of an S-400 (which is one of the more used SAMs) is 35 km (far above your average F-22 which has a ceiling of 20 km). You will not need a laser if you can lock an aircraft on radar. The last issue is the 1967 Outer Space Treaty forbids the placing of weapons of mass destruction in orbit. While lasers are not strictly classified as WMDs it is still of course the same to someone on the receiving end and sure as hell will not be allowed to slide by anyone with no suicidal tendencies.

    US made LAWS is only effective within 1.6 km range. Its mostly used on near stationary boats or very slow, low flying UAV. Iron Beam has an effective range of up to 10km and destroys fast high flying UAVs and rockets. It is also mobile and will be installed on planes to cover bad weather scenarios.

    system pertahanan laser memang lebih murah namun kelemahan sistem ini daya ledaknya tidak konstan tergantung ukuran objek targetnya, laser membutuhkan beberapa puluh detik untuk merusak atau meledakkan satu target, banyangkan jika ada10 target sekaligus saya yakin iron beam ini akan kesulitan menghalaunya berbeda dengan sistem pertahanan kovensional yang menggunakan roket daya ledaknya konstan bahkan dia bisa menghancurkan 10 taget bahkan lebih sekaligus.

    This is not the first directed energy weapon (DEW) to be actively deployed. The US Navy began fitting 30kW lasers to some of of its combat ships three years ago and will upgrade them with more powerful versions as they become available. The physical space and power generation available on a ship, especially a nuclear-powered one like an aircraft carrier, far surpasses that of any aircraft or vehicle so it is the ideal platform for this weapons technology. So long as a nation is not land-locked, ships with directed energy weapons can be used to help protect its borders from incoming missile attack, with land-based DEWs being the other half of the defense equation. Apart from costing peanuts per shot in relative terms, a DEW system also overcomes the traditional 'magazine problem' where the defender runs out of ammunition and is overwhelmed by incoming missiles.
