My god I love the old school British understatedness of him singing off at the end. Beautifully done.

Poor Richard Baker! He was always my favourite newsreader - and the voice of Mary, Mungo and Midge.

And Teddy Edwards for me. A warm, rich voice.

It's the real stuff and very nice to, what a super thing to end on.

The news seemed more about what was actually going on in the world. Today we seem to have more political issues and what they are/or not doing to change the world around us.

A professional in every sense of the word Richard, would be horrified at the poor quality of the BBC news channel - some of them look liked they walked in off the street! Richard could laugh at himself (when you have served on the Russian conveys-every day was a bonus) but when the light went on - it was clear crisp broadcasting of the highest quality !

As mentioned previously, the voice of children's programme "Mary, Mungo and Midge", plus the much less remembered "Teddy Edward", also a commentator for The Proms, and humorous / self-deprecating turns on a Morecambe and Wise Christmas show and in one episode of "Monty Python" ("lemon curry?"). Versatile and anything but pompous. One of the best.

Was this the period they had started phasing the old style 'straight' newsreader out, in favour of the 'journalist presenter ' instead? Wasn't Moira Stuart the last one?

Indeed. Jan Leeming, Richard Whitmore and finally Moira Stuart all sidelined/axed, sadly
