The logline on IMDb (the International Movie Database) for The Love Bug is simple: A race car driver becomes a champion with a Volkswagen Beetle with a mind of its own. But for OC87 Recovery Diaries Editor-in-Chief Gabe Nathan, it’s a bit more complicated.
You see, Gabe was five years old when he first saw The Love Bug and, man, was he bitten. He describes that first viewing as “utter magic.” Something was deposited in his brain as he sat there, watching the Disney film about a car with tons of personality, and the humans whose lives became entangled in its journey. Since, he’s had a life-long passion for Volkswagens-and a special fondness for the one with “53” painted on its hood.
Many years later, Gabe is a grown man; a gifted actor, theater director, and writer. And he still loves Volkswagens. Throughout his life, Gabe has wrestled with depression. Soon after the recent presidential election, that depression intensified. Gabe and his wife, Abi, were both feeling despondent, and decided to take some action to combat their feelings of hopelessness. As a gift to each other, they purchased a 1963 Volkswagen Beetle, did some necessary repairs to the car and created the graphics for the car that turned it into a moving homage to the original Herbie. Classic car collectors have a choice: restore their car to near-factory conditions and take it to a car show or two when the weather’s pitch-perfect; or accept their vehicle with its flaws and its impracticalities: and drive it as much as possible. Gabe and Abi choose the latter.
“I was hoping that Herbie would bring us some joy.”
And joy is what happens when Gabe and Herbie take to the road. Everywhere they go, people stop and stare and smile. More often than not, they take a photograph. Most importantly, however, they talk. They want to share their memories about the film, about Volkswagens in their past, about how happy it made them feel to see this car driving down the street, or parked in their supermarket parking lot. Not only does it lift the spirits of folks around him, it is doing wonders in terms of lifting Gabe’s depression, and his ability to interact with people.

“I’m a really shy person. I’m very socially awkward. At least that’s what I think about myself. I have a very hard time communicating with people verbally, socially and making small talk. Herbie does not allow you to hide. Herbie forces you to be out with people. He makes you want to be out with people because people are so excited to talk about the car and ask you questions and share their memories of the film or of the Beetle they used to own, their family. He makes me want to be out and about talking to people. That is not something that I do or that I have any desire to do without him. So he’s made me more social. He’s made me more extroverted. He’s made me more of a people person, and that’s a pretty amazing thing for a car to do.”
Gabe encourages everyone to “find their own Herbie”-that thing that you feel passionate about, that gives-as well as takes-positive energy-in order to create a sense of purpose in life.
“It makes me feel like I’m the luckiest person ever. That I get to have this and share this and see those smiles and see those thumbs up and hear people call out, ‘Hey, Herbie!’”

I've been a Herbie fan for a very long time, and seeing how Herbie brings happiness to those around him makes me even more of a Herbie fan. As Jim Douglas says, "There's something real about that little car. Something that doesn't even have a name." And as Tennessee Stienmetz says, "It's Heart..........that's what it is, heart." Which is true. Herbie is all heart, and although he doesn't lack attitude and personality, you can't help but love him at the end of the day. "They make 10,000 cars, and make em exactly the same way.................and 1 or 2 of em turn out to be something special........................nobody knows why." :)

I remember seeing The Love Bug when I was about 8 or 10, i'm 35 btw, and all I could think about was one day I'm going to have a Herbie of my own. The 3 movies bring so much joy to my heart and always make me smile when I watch them.

I'm so happy that Herbie was able to cure your depression. I was introduced to Herbie The Love Bug when first saw Herbie: Fully Loaded (2005). I was amazed by what he was doing from sliding on the guardrail to riding on the catch fence, flying through the air, barrel rolling, and landing back on his wheels. That's why I love him. Every time I see him, I smile from ear to ear. He gives the world joy.

I too bought a 1960 VW Beetle amidst depression and anxiety. Her name is Ivy! I cannot explain how amazing it has been for me. The people you meet, stories you hear and adventures you go on, that you otherwise wouldn’t have had the opportunity to; it is just amazing. My car saved my life. If you’re considering your own happiness Beetle, I say, do it and you will never look back!

Same here. I got myself a 67 when i was 18 in 2011. Bought it from the first money i earned. Now it is 2024 and Oscar is still going strong.
Herbie, Reminds me of myself in many ways, probably the best car with a personality to exist...

This is why I need to drive and own Herbie .

I'm fairly young and my first intro to Herbie was Fully Loaded when I was about maybe 7? I forgot all about it after my temporary enthrallment with the film and about a week ago I remembered Herbie after playing Forza and seeing a Herbie livery. I went through and watched all the films and the series last week and forgot how much joy it brought me as a kid. After all the things going on in life right now it was such a thrilling and heart warming escape from reality for me. I bought a little Herbie diecast for myself since I am too young to have enough money to buy a VW Beetle at the moment, but someday when I get enough money, I'll buy one of the old broken down Beetles that live in the neighbor hood over from me and restore it into a beautiful Herbie

Great Video, Beautiful car. I love it when the lady says to her son that it's "very different than any car you've riddin in, ever in your life" I couldn't agree more. Owning a 74 Super Beetle myself I can attest to that. These cars in general always seem to garner attention, whether they are in bad or immaculate condition. All the best.

I have a Herbie as well amd even though it's 2015 model I was able to get a lot of details right. I can personally attest to a lot of the things said in this great video. I get attention on the roads as well, and it makes me and others around me break out that Herbie smile. Keep riding along, creating strength through joy.

I have no idea why this video has so few views but I just wanted to say For a while now, my one and only dream in this life was to have a bug car and spend my life with it and my wife, wife which, I must specify, does not exist. The truth is, life hasn't been treating me so well for the last few years and I'm starting to lose hope. Hope that that dream is even possible. And I tried to replace it with bigger dreams, which I tried to use to compensate for the loss of this one dream I had. I thought of becoming a famous actor. Doing bigger things But in the end, everything just feels empty, accomplishments feel unearned and I just haven't found myself enjoying anything anymore. If I have to be honest, I'm not happy with my life right now. I really don't feel like I was asking for much but Now it feels like nothing will ever fill that empty void inside of me. I'm trying to move on but It's just so difficult I really hope I can get out of this one I really don't know what else to say To be honest I don't even know why I'm writing this comment Then again, I don't really know why I do anything at all anymore
