That explains why he let him hot wire him. Also, how does crossing wires in the engine start up a car when he could have disconnected the wires from the ignition switch and bypassed them.

That’s right! If you do, you will either end up getting your foot covered in oil, face covered in soot, bruise from getting whacked, a ticket from the police, or a combination of these things!

Whenever I watch these movies with my nephew, ha always asks, "What is Herbie saying?" So I make my own lines for the litte car! Here are the Herbie Quotes that I use for this scene here. 1:09 "Okay, NOW I'm gonna prank you!" 1:59 "Oh, you push me? Okay, I'm pushing back!!' 3:09 "Ooh, you guys wanna play Tug of War? If my memory is correct this was the first Herbie movie that I ever watched. I never really knew about the love bug as being the first movie. I absolutely love a good portion of this movie even though it's not a racing movie. I think the part that I remember the most is when Alonzo Hawk has that nightmare. It was both terrifying to me as a child but also laughable.

Maxwell: "Madam is not at home, sir. I know that because I waited a mere 2 seconds before coming to this conclusion".

There is a scene in the beginning of the movie where Mr. Hawk receives the humanitarian of the year award from his nephew to show how wonderful he is for helping people. But actually becomes pivotal when Willoughby found out from Nicole that kicking people out of buildings was his Uncle's plan all along and that is how Mr. Hawk builds his new buildings. At the same time I'm starting to think that this movie has dirty methods and law breakers than a cohesive film. Mr. Hawk is braking tons of laws during his demolition and construction carrier. So in the end of the movie after Mr. Hawk got sent to Alcatraz Hawk Enterprises will go out of business and being demolished and a new construction company knocks down Mr. Hawk's new buildings and they brought back the old buildings where Mr. Hawk kicked everyone in San Francisco out.

They blame the Police for smashing their cars. Also it was common in movies for Police crashes to be seen as good. Same as in James Bond movies.

No, he left Herbie in the care of Tennessee Steinmetz when he went to Europe to drive foreign racing cars, and Tennessee left him in the care of his aunt when he had to rush off to Tibet to visit his sick guru. Jim did somehow make up to Herbie by bringing him to Monte Carlo in the next sequel "Herbie goes to Monte Carlo".

Fan theory is Jim went to Europe because Mr Wu (from the first film) sponsored him to do so, and Herbie was effectively 'retired' after the pounding he took in the el dorado, hence the dialgous in Monte Carlo about making a comeback, Jim referring to Herbie as well as himself.

Hot-wiring . In other vehicles, this is done under the steering column, in Beetles this is done directly on the engine..

It’s a coat hanger. He feeds it down between the window and the rubber seal to grab ahold of the door lock mechanism and manually pull it so it unlocks

I always felt that Hawk enjoyed getting one over on the police. Mostly because to him, theyre beneath him. But it never made sense to me why he was smiling when they tried to pull. So as a kid i just assumed he was like "well, guess we're doing this now". And proceeded to just go along with it because why not?
