@JonP196111 жыл бұрын
Agreed 100%. I've seen many a top-shelf jazz musician, with roughly the same number of years of experience as those here, read charts during a gig. I think it's a sign of a true professional, even someone at this level, to still have respect for someone of Herbie's stature. As experienced as Vinnie is, he's showing respect to someone that's been longer than he. The world could use a little more of a return to the days when musicians had humility like this. My 0.02....

Just checking out some of the gigs with Chaka Khan. He swings hard & yet still can have a delicate touch when it's called for at a particular point in a tune. His fusion stuff with cats Frank Gambale & Jeff Berlin is sick, way over the top fusion. Love it! The the stuff he did with Robben Ford & Jimmy Haslip (Jing Chi) is so varied. Blues, Rock, Fusion. Of course, there's the classic stuff he's done with Zappa, arguably some of the most difficult work. The man has a breadth of talent. Peace.

Cut my teeth on Herbie, while learning to play Drums. I was being tutored by some older Jazz Musicians that were in the Cocoa Beach area. A bass player Johnnie Powers had played with Woody Herman sax player Burt Francis was with Woody and Duke Ellington. A drummer Mac McGinnis ,keyboard player from St. Pete Kelly Hamilton. They all were in late 60's and 70's and turned me on to Herbie Hancock. This was as hard as any Master Program in any Music School. I survived and learned less is sometime more and dynamics are the key to having an audience lean forwar in their chairs to listen. THANK-YOU To ALL THOSE GREAT PLAYERS who took their time to School a 16 year old Knucklehead

Agreed. He's got a nice pocket here and this particular tune is about Herbie. I don't see where, as the other poster suggested, he's being 'put above' other drummers. If one listens to the original, one will hear the same basic thing happening with regard to the rhythm section laying down a basic beat for Herbie. Harvey Mason (drummer on original) is regarded as having some of the deepest pocket out there. I think Vinnie does the original justice, not overplaying. Music isn't a contest...
