This man represents the black race to the core. I love listening to his commentary and PBS specials.

He's right, I watch him on PBS sometimes. And non-Americans of African origin, I am not American but I live in the States since 1994. "Race" is mostly an issue in the US, when I lived in Brussels, Belgium, born and raised there, I rarely thought about it and skin colours. Slavery existed in Africa, Israel, Egypt, etc, nothing new, of course slavery is wrong. Yes, true, individual responsibility. I'm an independent, and global citizen, voted Green. I don't care about black, white, red, blue, I look beyond that. We're all diverse, not all the same, don't speak the same way, or think the same, not the same language. I speak French, English, Spanish, and some Italian.

The black experience is very different here than it is anywhere in the world. Not really fair to compare your upbringing overseas to ours

I don't think many Americans realise how different the concept of race is outside of America. Yes racism exists everywhere but it's particularly bad in the US.

@@jayel1471 no it isn't. If you live in South Africa for example it ia daily and ongoing horror or racial and political tension . A huge part of the issue is the insular , exceptionalism of Black folks in America and the complete disinterest or lack of awareness in any other Black experience or even validation of Black experiences beyond America. Most guys don't even know about Afro Brazilians. This inward mentality is the opposite to the internationalism of Black civil rights and intellectual leaders of years before like James Baldwin, King, Malcolm, Angela Davis, Paul Robeson etc. Very few with the exception of Robin Dg Kelley and others today , are makin these important global connections. The US does NOT reside in a vacuum and is not the centre of the universe.

As soon as the non-white population reaches a certain threshold they will be telling you to go back where you came from.

PERSONALLY I'm GLAD this is BEING OPENLY and HONESTLY DISCUSSED by not ONLY BLACK AMERICA ,but all of AMERICA for REASON in PETIULAR , HOPEFULLY it will DESTORY a LIE that NEVER should been in the FIRST PLACE but LONG TERM has to GREAT DEAL of D FRICTION in BLACK AMERICA itself at TIMES in my OPINION . For some REASON we could ACCEPT DIFFERENCE of OPINION in other RACES it this NATION , but AMONGST US as BLACK AMERICANS .. It's there and it's always going to be there , For some MANY YEAR'S PEOPLE have TRY to SELL the of a SOLID BLACK BLOCK VOTE in this NATION which NEVER EXSITED to those WHOM knew the TRUTH . This BLACK BLOCK VOTE was a BLACK COMMUNITY which NEVER EXSITED EXCEPT for those WHOM wanted and needed it . What did LEAD to in MIND was FINGER POINTING and NAME CALLING which was UNJUSTIFIED and UNSERVED of PEOPLE WHOM took a DIFFERENT STANCE on a ISSUE exspecially if they did not FAVOR the ISSUE or ISSUES . So in my PERSONAL OPINION it HURT more the HELPED .Some JUST ACCEPT the SIMPLE FACT YOIR CAUSE is not EVERYONE elses CAUSE . UNTIL WE can ACCEPT and LIVE with that SIMPLE TRUTH of LIFE there WILL NEVER UNITY of the TYPE some ENVISION and TALK ABOUT , it's JUST NOT GOING to happen UNTIL PEOPLE REALIZE and UNDERSTAND we have no PREMINENT CAUSES or ISSUES only . INTEREST which it the BETTERMENT of all of US.

What is the name of the article he wrote in 1998? I want to read it. I know that what he says is true. I have always known that, but I want to read his article. Also, why does the interviewer sound angry at times? Also, where is the rest of the interview?

Nina Travis he’s not angry, he’s emphasizing a point-he’s agreeing with Gates and emphasizing points often missed. Try googling Gates and his corpus of writing comes up. Happy New Year!

Much of what is being said is true while some of it is based on lazy stereotypes that have been refuted by actual peer-reviewed research. He is kind of guilty of the very thing he accuses other of.
