Gotta say Henry, just bought an SG6 to tide me over after selling my Apia Lynx which I felt seriously let down by and I going to keep the SG6. Absolutely outstanding blank, you’ve done a superb job on that rod fair play to you.

I always use cheap as chips telescopic rods, 7', 9' 9'6" and 10', which combined with a decent reel - my current favourite the Fin-nor Trophy 40, new from £40 if you shop around on line, and which is a super reel at any price. I can cast, feel, reel and land fish at a fraction of the price of the recommended gear, and have fun doing it without the fear of losing, or busting expensive tackle in the process. The worst that's gonna happen is that I'll get water in my wellies. Just saying. Many thanks H.G. Raymondo

Hi Raymond. Such a great point made there. You don't need all these expensive Rods. You run the risk of breaking Rod Rings on the Rocks. I do that all the time. I replace my own Rings really badly and with Cheap Chinese Rings i bought as a large boxful for about 6 quid. They still do the same job. The Rod doesn't feel any different to use. I always use a decent Reel with good line though and that gives you confidence to land a decent fish. I don't want to worry about breaking expensive Rods when i'm out there in the mix all day. Stevie in Scotland.

Hi Stevie. Were I to be clambering around in sand and mud, over rocks and boulders, up and down cliffs, and in and out of, and thoroughly soaked by the waves, with valuable equipment, I'd be more interested in protecting it, and probably not ge any fishing done. It's painful enough have to lob expensive lures out in to the unknown. Regards. Raymondo

So it goes. My go to rod at the moment is a #7 weight telescopic fly rod from AliExpress which is useless for its intended purpose, but the end cap unscrewed, and six inch length of broom handle inserted, it makes for an excellent 5-35gram spinning rod. £13 at time of purchase, and still available, and it won't break the bank, or my heart, if it gets busted. And there'll be parts to salvage, probably worth more than the purchase price, and the opportunity to by more if I wish to. R.

Dear Henry. Give me 10 days and I will have you competently paddling and self-righting a kayak. Its worth half this years holiday! Why struggle to cast beyond the surf when you can sit on the other side of in it having dropped a lobster pot? 😊

Because I catch more bass off the shore than I do in my kayak. Believe it or not, sitting in a 12ft bright yellow lump of plastic scares a good proportion of fish in shallow water. Also, I'm on my mark and fishing with 20 mins walk, loading the kayak takes that alone, and most of my marks take more time paddling than a walk. What are good bass conditions are usually poor kayak conditions inshore, or at the best very uncomfortable. It isn't very often that I think lack of distance casting is stopping me catching, once or twice a season perhaps. Kayaks see me fishing and then paddle right into the shallows to ask me if I'm catching, to which I reply 'I was'.

I keep cracking off with my sgs5 10ft 12/46 grm rod. This happens with 40 grm meyals and 28grm metals. I have noticed the eye are very small on the top section, is this the issue? I am using 16lb braid and 20lb flouro rubbing leader with an albright knot. Any advice would be appreciated, losing £7.00 savage gear lures on the first chuck is becoming expensive 😂

I’ve been using a 10-12 foot rod for my bass fishing since the early 80s. Not only do they allow for longer casts, but they afford more control when playing the fish. Granted, modern rods with their super technology and faster actions allow for long casts, but I fail to see how they can control a big fish which has to be managed over boulder fields from the rocks. I will not buy a new rod under 10 foot!
