    Some of the Model T’s articulation comes from the frame itself, which is made out of vanadium steel; stronger, lighter, and more flexible than other steels used by auto manufacturers at the time. Two people on either end of a bare Model T frame could pick it up and simultaneously twist it in either direction. Each axle has one laterally -mounted leaf spring, as opposed to having two that run parallel with the frame rails. While this isn’t the best for high speed driving, it works wonders for articulation, as shown in the video.

    The model T suspension is based on old carriage suspensions that were developed for hundreds of years before cars were even thought of. The duel transverse leaf spring suspension was used on carriages at least a hundred years before the model T. Most Amish buggies still use dual transverse leaf springs. Transverse mounted leaf springs are great for suspension travel on rough terrain, and since only 2 are required it simplified production, but they allow extreme body roll which can lead to roll overs if turning too fast. By the 40s transverse leaf springs were a thing of the past and the 4 leaf spring setup found on many vehicles with rigid front and rear axles became popular. Highways and higher speeds needed even more stability so leaf springs were replaced on the front with coil springs and independent front suspensions. Its still amazing to see the model T in action.

    @Tilc Rekcil Many Model Ts had no differentials, they were complicated and expensive. It was optional, because many people lived on cobbled roads where traction was nowhere near as limited, and it was more maintenance than a simple gear to drive the left axle. A proper differential was optional, just like wheel brakes.

  • @HenryJaySabercat

    @HenryJaySabercat

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@specialopsdave as someone who rebuilds these cars, I feel I have to correct both of those statements. The Model T did in fact have a standard differential. It's wasn't very advanced, just a plain old open diff, but it did have one. Perhaps pre T Ford's didn't, but that's beyond my scope of knowledge. Wheel brakes were standard in the form of the parking/emergency brake on the rear wheels. You could buy external rear brakes that operated with the brake pedal, but those were not factory equipment and could only be found aftermarket.
