Henrik Widegren - The Ballad of the Superstar Surgeon Paolo Macchiarini - Live from the hospital

Музыка

This is a ballad about the superstar surgeon Paolo Macchiarini. And sadly, every word in this song is true.
Anna, thank you for reviewing my lyrics! And Chancellor of Justice, thank you for dropping Macchiarinis charges of slander. I agree.

The Ballad of the Superstar Surgeon Paolo Macchiarini
Music/Lyrics: Henrik Widegren
Ladies and gentlemen
Please, let me sing
Let me tell a story,
So hideous and grim
It is just as crooked
As a tortellini
It is about the surgeon
Paolo Macchiarini
T’was in Stockholm, Sweden
Two thousand ten
A surgeon was recruited
By enterprising men
They celebrated with
Champagne and Martini:
”Hooray we got the superstar
Paolo Macchiarini!”
He wanted to facilitate
The patient’s respiration
With advanced medical
Regeneration
He thought outside the box
And anything goes
So he planted stem cells
On a garden hose
But some people were
Somewhat sceptical
What if the new trachea
Did not stick at all?
But noone likes
A naysaying genie
So they cheered and bowed
To Paolo Macchiarini
The next year in Stockholm
Opening night
The OR was packed
Everybody wanted a bite
But Paolo loved animals
Protocol, be cursed!
So he tried the operation
On humans first
In fancy papers he
Described his victory
And soon he operated
Patient two and three
But he forgot to mention
Something very odd
How the first patient was
Coughing up blood
Next in line was Julia
Not sickly at all
He told her that the risk
Was very, very small
She had a family and her hair
Was blond like linguine
She trusted the surgeon
Paolo Macchiarini
So Paolo kept busy
And patients in line
But the plastic airways
Weren’t doing fine
The tracheas are perfect
Reported Macchiarini
But the tracheas looked like
Rotting zucchini
One day four doctors
Finally awakened
And shouted out:
“The emperor is naked”
But the board said:
“How have you acquired
These medical records
We could have you fired”
But soon everybody
In this world could see
Plastic doesn’t work
But there was no plan B
Slowly the patients
Lost their breath
Their new, fantastic airways
Caused a slow death
At last Macchiarini
Together with the board
And the president
Were fired. Thank the Lord!
But they’ve got new jobs
Are safe and sound
While half a dozen patients
Lay in the ground
So why do I sing this?
Why do I bore ye?
Because we must never
Forget this story
A mixture of Bergman and Fellini
The ballad of the surgeon
Paolo Macchiarini
The superstar surgeon
Paolo Macchiarini

Both of the versions of this song are great The original Swedish one has some brilliant wordplay that doesn’t work in English, but this one has its highlights too I, too, came from Medlife Crisis, but I think I’ll stick around. This song managed to both be humourous and treat the subject matter with the gravity it deserves

This is a really good summary of the whole disaster, tbh. I'm glad he's finally being tried in court, but honestly there's no prison time he can be sentenced to that will undo the immense harm he caused. Personally, I'd like to see consequences for the people whose negligence let him continue for as long as he did, as well...

Yes, Dr Paolo did Not care about his own patients! He never did follow up, no matter how badly his patients suffered post-operation! Nor he ever kept tabs on his patients, even when the other Doctors reached out to him! He did not return their phone calls! It is these same Doctors that had to watch Dr Paolo M’s patients experience terrible, painful outcomes and deaths! He is likely a Psychopath! Yet, many said how charming, warm, mesmerizing he was when he spoke! He fooled many! Also, his previous colleagues did try to tell the Karolinska Institute in Sweden Not to hire him, that his research was suspect and untrustworthy, but they were ignored! It is hard to fathom how this Dr didn’t show empathy to even his very young patients! He has Children himself!

"...... and unfortunately every word in this song is true." These words make me so sad because they are true! I am Italian and I didn't know this story. I knew it with your song, Dottor Henrik. As a ballad is a marvellous ballad. A very good ballad. And, this Italian Doctor, is....... I am not sure what he is. In Italy, quite everybody doesn't speak about him, because televisions, papers, and, finally, the "media" don't speak about this "story". After I listened about your song I did some research, an Internet research, I knew about him. It is quite impossible that most Italians doesn't know about this "fellow-countryman"; I'll pray for the victims and their relatives. And I hope their souls are in Heaven. ❤❤❤

I was a medical student in Florence when Macchiarini became Professor there. I remember his name in the newspaper everyday, as the Tuscany politicians strongly wanted him. Then once in Florence, the thoracic surgery school doctors just hated him and tried everything to kick him out. It was my opinion that we had a superstar and we lost him to the Karolinska because of the envy of his Italian colleagues… It was the 2010.

It wasn’t even tested on animals !! These patients were tortured to death slowly . They suffered horribly in their last moments If my trachea was damaged and I had to choose between death and having this thing operated in me I would choose death easily . That being said we might want to remember that Karolinska institute started out as the Swedish State institute of race biology in 1922, inspiring Hitler.

The reminder about protocol requiring animal testing first reminds me of an article I read regarding the "no animal testing" craze. The author pointed out that if a new product advertises it was not tested on animals. that means it was tested on humans instead. Probably the first customers.

    1. Unless you are highly educated in medicin, you'll never understand your options. You would be chosing between "dying a horrible death" or "risk of dying a horrible death with a chance to survive". 2. Self perservation will make the absolute majority chose the alternative where survival is possible, no matter the threat of pain and agony.

What he did is so far from a laughing matter, the way he destroyed and ended life, the way the whistle blowers were treated and the way the board of KI dragged our amazing Institute and Hospitals name in the mud. BUT this song was spot on, just what we needed, it’s so tragic that feeling it is too much to handle. So being able to laugh at his stupidity and pathetic excuse for a doctor is just brilliant 😂😭

Jag tycker att du gör både den Svenska och den Engelska versionen väldigt bra! Du får till allvaret, heder till dom sjuka och piken till "stjärnkirurgen" på ett sätt som förklarar och berör sanningen!
