Henrik Lundqvist Is The Greatest Goalie of the 21st Century

*ADDENDUM
Robert Luongo’s career as a whole looks a lot better than just 41 goals saved above expected, to the point where he could challenge Lundqvist for the title of “best goalie of the 21st century”.
…Buuuut for the first seven years of his career, advanced stats weren’t tracked. So, we have to use the next best thing is we are going to compare their careers completely.
That would be goals saved above average (GSAA). It’s not a 1-for-1 comparison, but beggars can’t be overfastidious.
Luongo’s first seven years add up to an awesome 172.7 goals saved above average. BUT if even if you add that one to his GSAx, it still doesn’t beat out Hernik Lundqvist if you account for his GSAA pre-2007 as well. In fact, the gap is still about as wide as Jonathan Quick’s entire career (~30 GSAx).
A breakdown of macro’s both their full career stats also favor Lundqvist. So without any disrespect to Luongo, there can only be one crown. And who more apt to wear it than a king?

"Lundqvist did not play a meaningless game in his NHL career (a game where his team had a 0.0 chance of winning the Stanley Cup) until his 930th game in the NHL, which came during his 13th NHL season. That means for the first 12 years of his career the Rangers were either a playoff team or had a mathematical chance of making the playoffs in every game. The only season in his first 12 years the Rangers did not qualify for the playoffs was the 2009-10 season when they were eliminated from playoff contention on the final day of the regular season in a shootout loss to the Philadelphia Flyers." -NBC Sports

That might be the best Hank stat ever. What's worse for Hank is that the 1990's logjam of Hall of Fame goalies (Brodeur, Roy, Hasek, Belfour) all won the Cup at least once in their career. And yet, Hank never did. He is our generation's Curtis Joseph. Terrific goalie for years and years that never got the ultimate prize. Goes to show you how tough it is to win the Stanley Cup. Even tougher now that we have 32 teams in the mix every season.

Martinez's goal is still one of the most gut-wrenching and depleating moments of all-time, as you can see Lundqvist's reaction the whole time. I'm not a Rangers fan (nor am I a Kings fan, so that helps too), but that's definitely one of the times I've been the saddest watching hockey.

King Henrik in Game 7's against everyone is also insane. My Sens lost one in 2012 to Hank and I think it was a 2-1 final. He balled out, especially in those do-or-die games where his team needed a win. He probably has a winning record in elimination games, too.

“Lundqvist would play out of his mind, rest of the team not matching that effort” truly the story of his career. Hank was truly one of the best to ever do it. Even his “down turn” was still good, and we aren’t really even acknowledging that the team was rebuilding during that time and icing some uhh shall we say, devoid of talent lineups. I mean, since the Rangers started the rebuild they’ve had at least 3-5 non NHL players at all times and he was still keeping them somewhat competitive. The fact he never won the Cup is criminal. Just goes to show how it really is the hardest championship to win. I’m almost kind of glad he wasn’t able to play for the Caps, don’t think my heart could handle seeing him in a different jersey. Thank you for this video, it was a privilege to grow up watching him play.

Seconded. Especially given the fact that it wasn't a Final 4 series. NYR-NJD in 1994 was Final 4. We had a lot of legendary Finals series to look back on. But that 2nd Round series was next-level. Every play matters, as the cliche goes. That series came down to one play. One shot from Stepan. And I think that was a 3-1 series deficit for NYR, too. Hank needed to be razor-sharp from Game 5 onwards.

  • @theroseexperience

Yet Hank was just better than Holtby when it mattered and what he did from Game 5 on is just unseen by goaltenders. Holtby let in bad goals, Hank did not but that goalie interference call on DSP in Game 5 which would have put the Caps up 2 goals in a close out game is one of the worst calls in playoff history.

Was lucky enough to be at his jersey retirement (bought tix weeks before they announced cause it was a game against Minnesota and I wanted to see Zuccarello and they happened to pick that game to do the ceremony). Appreciate this video coming from a Caps fan, you guys always showed a lot of respect to Hank and I think most Rangers fans felt that. It sucks so much he never won a cup, but the years and years of joy it brought watching him play is all that really matters in the end. Don't forget that Hank played for the same team his entire career, and if a team happens to not field a good team every year, you can't blame that on the goalie. There's a reason why the Rangers had such high draft picks several years in a row and it wasn't because of Henrik. not to mention that the Rangers were not an elite team for basically Henrik's entire career. they looked elite because of Henrik. If you don't believe me, look up their roster from their 2014 cup run. any crazy numbers during the season? do you even remember any of the names on that team?

As a lifelong Northern Virginia resident and Caps fan, I would enjoy seeing a breakdown of our most tragic defeats. I think most years in the Ovechkin era are arguable for most tragic. The sweep against Detroit in the 98 finals which was actually very close for a sweep. The Easter Epic. For me the one that hurts the most is always probably going to be 2015, just because I barely remember watching the 2008-2010 series (I’m 20 years old now so I was pretty young back then). That one came at just the right time for me to vividly remember it and I was on a vacation with a family full of Rangers fans for it too so that was just brutal. I rewatched that game 7 a couple of years ago and it was just as bad as seeing the loss for the first time. I had forgotten just how well the Caps fought, and they really did seem to be in control in that OT until the face off that doomed them. Another year where fantastic goaltending and bad luck robbed Ovi of a cup and perpetuated the unjust choker label.

I, as a Kings fan, always think about how I wouldn't have been upset if the Kings lost the 2014 finals to Hank. We got our miracle run in 2012, 2014 was just extra treat. Watching Martinez's goal every year on the anniversary never fails to give me chills, not just for the feeling I remember watching as a kid, but for Hank and how I wish I'd gotten to see him win a cup too. Growing up in that era of hockey with Hank, Quickie, Price, Crawford, and Rask, man we were spoiled. No other goalie in NHL history deserved to win one more than Hank though. I hope to see him as a part of a front office, winning one someday.

i really feel bad for Lundqvist... in that, his incredible talent was wasted by the rangers. seriously, those teams he was on would have been nowhere near the playoffs without him... shame on the rangers for not getting him a Cup

Awesome video, you've almost perfectly summed up just how great Hank was. Nonetheless I would've loved for you to bring up just HOW BAD the Rangers were during Hanks prime lmao, for example, from 2010 to 2020 the Rangers had a point per game player exactly ONCE. It's almost unfathomable to me that Henrik got any of these Rangers teams into the playoffs let alone into the cup finals 😭

I would definitely put Hank as a first ballot hall of famer, no doubt. It sucks that he could go down as the greatest goalie to not win the Stanley Cup in the new millennium. The Mark Martin of hockey…

That 2005-06 rookie class was nuts. King Hank. Ovechkin. Crosby. Ryan Miller. I'm sure there are other names, but those are 4 modern-day legends from that same class. I wonder if 05-06 is the best rookie class ever...it's at least at the top of the list in my time. In NHL history, probably Top 5 at worst. The 2005 lockout definitely played a role in that but it's still fun to look back on.

Do you think that one day you could do a video on Jonathan quick? Quickie was an underrated goalie, until his recent downfall. He could’ve one the Vezina in 2012 if it wasn’t for Hanks performance

As a Kings fan, I don't really feel sorry for the King after that double ot winner from Martinez. Looking back now almost 9 years later, I can definitely say Hank is not one of the best, he is the best goaltender ever and he should've won a cup. But my biased ass is still glad that my team won although every Ranger and Hank fan was and still is heartbroken from that game 5 and I can understand that. Amazing video, almost did his career justice of how insane he was.

You sir should be hired by the NHL, a broadcast Channel, an NHL team or go on a become a great documentary director on your own. NHL might be the book you Choose to read from but you narrate those old pages back to life in a most magical way. On a personal note, you also managed to to showcase Potvin, Lundquist, the Leafs and another swedish born goalie, I got pretty lucky there! Now show me Lundquist vs Holtby series 😁
