Henri Rousseau: A collection of 140 paintings (HD)
Description: "Henri Rousseau became a full-time artist at the age of forty-nine, after retiring from his post at the Paris customs office - a job that prompted his famous nickname, "Le Douanier Rousseau," "the toll collector." Although an admirer of artists such as William-Adolphe Bouguereau and Jean-Leon Gerome, the self-taught Rousseau became the archetypal naïve artist. His amateurish technique and unusual compositions provoked the derision of contemporary critics, while earning the respect and admiration of modern artists like Pablo Picasso and Wassily Kandinsky for revealing "the new possibilities of simplicity." Rousseau's best-known works are lush jungle scenes, inspired not by any firsthand experiences of such locales (the artist reportedly never left France), but by frequent trips to the Paris gardens and zoo."

I happen to be a big fan of Henri Rousseau's paintings! I am mesmerized by his style and the colors that he uses. There are several paintings of his that I could name that I absolutely adore! I think Surrealism was the main style that he used as a French artist. And the painting called "Self Portrait" is very brilliant! But I also like "The Dream' "Sleeping Gypsy" "The Jungle" "Tiger In a Tropical Storm" "Carnival Evening", paintings like that!

Thank you for these videos of Master Artists, so we can almost have a museum experience in our homes. I wasn't aware of the diversity of subjects in Henri Rousseau's work. Favorites include 11:11 , 6:03 , and 0:11 but there are many more. His snake like plants absolutely glow in the lighting and i love the variety of trees and leaf repetitions.

I love the description that Rousseau “paints in a language of nouns”. So true

There’s hope for me since I am self taught. Some of mine are amateurish. I am relieved that people thought that way about him.

His dreamscapes and jungle scenes are my favorites, the more mundane subjects, not so much. His children and portraits in general are rather cringy, but I love his work.
