Henri Nouwen on Thomas Merton
I spoke with Henri Nouwen when he traveled to Mobile, Alabama in May, 1994 to visit the L'Arche community. My wife Marie was on the Board of L'Arche Mobile at the time. Nouwen talked about first meeting Merton at Gethsemani and the effect Merton had on his thinking. Enjoy!

Fr Nouwen's accent was much thicker 25yrs previous and evidently Thomas Merton could not understand him too well that he indicated in his journal, and called him Henri Now. He wrote also he was very friendly. Is his right eye a glass eye? It stays fixed while the other roams.
A great spiritual master has influenced another master profoundly.

Merton is cool. And so is this guy!
Very rarely do we get a saint of our times.it is people like nouven sent to us by the Lord in our generation to look into our sins and the gift of a free will to stay away from sin.future generations will allways have another saint to show people the way.

About 5 years ago I travelled to the Abby of Gethsemane located-outside of Bardstown, KY. I’m not a fan of visiting gravesites but I located Merton’s grave at the abby… simple , unremarkable which I appreciated. I visited the abby because of Merton so I figure why not locate his grave. The area was so peaceful and quite, I didn’t want to leave.
