Hemostasis Part I, platelet plug, fibrin meshwork, vWF, Platelets, thrombin, fibrinogen, PAR, GPIb

platelet plug, fibrin meshwork, vWF, Platelets, thrombin, fibrinogen
This video is the first part of my 2 long videos on #hemostasis
After explaining the definition of haemostasis, we go through its four stages in detail
#vasoconstriction
primary hemostasis or the formation of a #platelet plug
secondary hemostasis which includes the #coagulation cascade leading to conversion of #fibrinogen into #fibrin by the action of #thrombin
plug contraction and consolidation
Next, we take a specific look at platelet function in hemostasis. Platelets are disc-shaped and anucleated. They are derived from megakaryocytes in the bone marrow. And they have 2 types of granules: alpha-granules, and dense (delta) granules.
Their function can be divided under the following four categories:
platelet adhesion ( mediated by von willebrand factor and Glycoprotein Ib )
change of shape (plates with protrusion, increasing surface area, increasing affinity for fibrinogen )
secretion of granules ( signaling by PAR receptor, switched on by thrombin, ADP release activates more platelets)
platelet aggregation ( GP-IIb and GP-IIIa )
If you want to continue learning about hemostasis watch Part II of this video.
