Ғылым және технология

In today's video, we take out Trimble's latest 7th Generation RTK receiver, the R12iand put it head to head with the Hemisphere S631 under canopy. See what difference Hemisphere technology can make when under canopy.

Before you ask, yes we have tested the repeatability. Check out our video on the subject: kzread.info/dash/bejne/d5uO19mEo9uzgqg.html.

The head to head we were all waiting for. I've used both now and the S631 is superior. And more importantly, at least half the cost.

Hi Jay, glad to hear it! Trimble makes some great products, but they can be pretty expensive!

With base rover of same brand, this performance is not surprising at all. Even Chinese boards work great in base rover setup. Spectra (Ashtech) works the best with CORS networks but Trimble doesn't back it the same way as they do their own.

Hi Snuffy, We have a video on repeatability here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/d5uO19mEo9uzgqg.html. We were using the regular fix modes.

What is the correct format used for each unit ? don’t tell me you guys using Smartnet. CMRX or RTX gives the best performance for Trimble.

Hi Chao, we were using the latest CMRx message format recommended by Cansel in base & rover setup.

The Hemsiphere S631 was using RTCM 3 MSM, the industry standard message type, not even Hemisphere's own ROX message type. We know a lot of users use networks, and wanted to see how the S631 performs with a widely available message format. If you want to see it performing on ROX check out this video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/dJqa2tWmcryng7Q.html

That is not real cover. All new rtk would work well there. Get in some thick bush. The trimble would kick ass!

Hi Rupert, Unfortunately, we are at the tail end of winter up here! We are still waiting on the leaves of the trees to come out. Both units work great in canopy, but we saw the Trimble struggle a bit in those low satellite count environments. You can check out the S631 in some different tree cover here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/eqKIxpOGqqiXaLQ.html.

Not a brand shill but my 631s work well in the brush, even with Surefix turned on, matter of fact I tend to double and triple check because I don't think it should get fix.

Obviously it won't as it struggled in these scenarios shown already!

All Trimble RTK tech is borrowed or let's say bought from Ashtech. Brainchild of the legend Javad Ashjaee. Trimble now makes good software. Sorry they buy good software.

Great test, though I understand there is a lot more to just getting a "Fix" (i.e. position quality and repeatability). At my employer we have 2 pairs of Carlson BRx7's (rebranded S631's) and I have been blown away by where we can get shots and the repeatability (checking again and again). In 2 years of use now we have seen a couple of "blown" shots, so they are rare but do occur (I'm sure the same could be said concerning the Trimble's). Where the BRx7/S631's suffer is in internal radio performance. I have been disappointed in the radio's inability to punch through brush/trees over long distances. My prior experience was mainly with Topcon Hiper II's and Hiper V's and those radio's performed amazing! What we have done is purchased a radio extension cable with 5/8x11 mounting bracket (bought from iGage.com) and we boost our antenna (the same stock antenna) up +/- 15ft using a 3-section prism pole held in a prism pole tripod. This has helped tremendously, but still short of the Topcon's amazing performance. A few months ago I was bragging to a Trimble dealer sales rep about how awesome our BRx7's are and his comment was "well where you'll see a difference is in the quality of the position, in other words the Trimble's position will be "tighter" and more accurate". My response was, "Well why on earth would I want to pay 3x as much (literally 3x, he told me the Trimble R12 base/rover system cost) to gain a position a couple of hundredths tighter?" If I'm locating a property corner on the end of a 2,000 foot long line (typical scenario for us), what does that couple of hundredths matter? It's "good enough". In the end, I didn't have to conventionally traverse to that point which would have been much less accurate anyway! Loving videos like these! Keep up the good work!

Hi Garry, what radio settings are you using on the BRx7/S631s? We have managed over 6 miles line of sight, and 3 miles inside of the city. Check these videos out, kzread.info/dash/bejne/m4p9vLWvYLuaqto.html and kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZJt3p9Sen6WYgNY.html. I would reccomend these settings: 1 Watt Satel FEC ON 450 MHz
