I think studying the manuals and constantly trying to apply the techniques in slightly various ways is best. This way you can feel rather than think what is best and keep testing with sparring partners. You're right, because sometimes we see a picture and it doesn't seem obvious what they mean, but once you play around with the technique a little, it becomes obvious and the technique comes to life. For example a section might not have a lot of text along with the picture, or something was assumed and not written. Like there are certain things in HEMA that the fencing masters assume you already know. You might think why isn't this technique working Vs a enemy cut, then you find out it actually works against thrusts, and is not meant to be used to counter a cut. Very good video.

Complimenti Federico, i tuoi video sono davvero migliorati! Montaggio, contenuti, e anche il tuo Inglese! Metterò in pratica quest'idea di girare un video mentre si fa sparring :-)

For me it is stay upright and footwork with drills. Drills are key to me and everyone in my club and sparring does help to improve us but take it slow if needed. Focusing on small things like posture or strait foot individually makes life much easier rather than going all at once. Also how come you don’t have lots of subs your channel is pretty damn good.

Ooooh, I love the video. I had these situations - when learned action worked intended way, or when learned action seemed impossible to perform, until it emerged from different tactical situation - and I keep it that way. Or when I see that efficiency of particular technique decreased, so I think about it, talk about it to partners and instructors, so I can do it better. Very proffesional way to train - read, think, be interesed, ask questions, film yourself, experiment and make conclusions. You've made very important point, also present in modern fencing theory - that new technique must be learned with partner, but once you know it, you can improve it. It was suprising for me that drilling one cut or thrust for hours didn't gave me the effect, but when I discovered what I was doing wrong - by looking at me getting hit, by feeling the biomechanics in my body, by hearing and watching more experienced others - I made adjustments, drilled it for few minutes, and the improvement was instant. Great conclusions!

I know this video is a few years old, but @ 0:25, the person on the right side of the video, with the blade tucked under their arm.... Where can I find this? I've never seen anything like it and would be interested to see that application of such.

Wow, very insightful, thank you!! Regarding interpretations im wondering if you might consider giving me some info or doing a video on the "Villains"/"Peasants" Strike as described in the Wide plays of Fiores longsword? Just a thought, been giving me some trouble and the interpretations I find online seem to describe what you talk about, of requiring too many steps to be effective in a real fight.

I know when your about to cut, a lot of the time you drop your elbows first, should be raising them slightly above the shoulder the shoulder line to protect the head in the cut
