HEMA Glove Journey

Спорт

This video was meant to be a comparison video for all gloves, but that ended up taking way to long to shoot, so I turned it into a journey based upon what I have owned and used up to this point. A 4-6 part complete comparison video may come in the future.

Thank you for the work you put into making this video! You may be interested to note that the SP Infinity cost 190 €, which puts them at $297 CAD at the time of writing this comment, which is a fair bit more than the $189 CAD you paid for them. Given that the Euro hasn't dropped below a 1.4 exchange rate with the Canadian dollar, I would venture a guess to say that you got a special reviewers price. Still probably the best bang for your buck in the lineup, but I don't know if the hassle of replacing the glove is worth $300 CAD.

Def did not get a special price, I am not that well known, but I wish! I looked at who I ordered it from, prices are up there as well. , so ya about $100 more now. I agree it is still the best bank-for-the-protection out there though.

Nice, informative video! Sparring Gloves (Mittens) could get more love, though! ;) But I understand that when you go for Spes Lobsters, you will mit necessarily try SG Mittens since they fill a similiar niche..

Unfortunately, as a Scottish HEMA practitioner, I am really having trouble finding any protective gloves that will fit inside the basket hilt swords. ven the Red Dragons come no where near fitting inside the guard on the hilt. The only option I have found for our members is the Dagger Gloves from Purple Heart Armory which fit perfectly inside the basket hilt, but dont offer quite the protection to the back of the hand and wrist that we would want.

Basket Hilts can pose a problem size wise. Thokks maybe? But does you basket provide most of your protection, meaning, you just need a little bit of padding...or?

Or putting rubberization on top of the resin, to absorb and diffuse impacts and prevent the resin from breaking. I think I'm gonna go with Hoofs from sparring gloves. For the cost, they seem worth it.

  • @colleptic

I think the resin will break regardless, it seems to degrade over time, so something under and over would do best. I know lots of people who the SG hoof, so not a bad way to go.

HI, just discovered your channel and I want to first thank you for making this great content! I am a beginner in long sword (Meyer), and I'm looking into gloves and gambeson/fencing jacket. I'm quite tall and have big hands, so my club's equipment is really hard to put on. I'm really interested in the infinity gloves, but a lot of people recommend the SPES heavy -type of gloves to beginners. What is your opinion on that ?

  • @colleptic

    @colleptic

    3 жыл бұрын

Hey thanks for discovering me heh! Here is the thing, a lot of people use the SPES and do not require a 5-finger gloves, so one of the main factors in your decision should be what do you what to use? SPES is the way to go if you are ok with using them, they are a bit heavy (nothing fatiguingly heavy though), but super protective outside of a couple minor areas, just make sure you get the thumb cap protectors. Infinities are not perfect, but one of the better 5 finger gloves I have used to date, and they are priced in an area that will allow you to by other gloves in the future imo. If you go with Infinities, I highly suggest sending them your custom measurements. If you look for my final Infinity review video, I only had to modify the plastic on the pinkies, in one area for comfort. So, if you do not "need" 5-fingers... SPES is they way to go 100%, if you go 5-finger, you have options, but Infinites are a good option.

Hi Stacey, I have a follow-up question. First of all, thanks for the video, really interesting and useful. Now the question. Similar to the person to whom you have responded, I am a begginer in HEMA longsword. I want to buy my first pair of gloves. I am deciding between the SPES Red Lobsters and the Infinities. I understand all the pros and cons of both of those gloves, however, my issue is that I have pretty small hands. The only lobster size available is M/L which accoring to the size chart is quite monstrous for my hands… With the Infinities, on the other hand, I could get a custom size, which is quite a strong argumen for me… To put ot into perspective, I have had the Lobsters on for one sparring and they were good, although quite huge… I also tried the Infinities on, however didn’t spar in those… So, for someone with small hands, would you recommend getting the custom fit gloves or going with the Lobsters, even though bigger than needed? Thanks a lot Denny

i think the pro gauntlet were a little over hyped. two of my instructors have them and we use them in sparring from time to time, i've used them a few times but i don't feel safe in them. the inner fingers can slip out quite easily. just two weeks ago one of my club mates using them had this happen with the pinky finger and was hit on that finger from an under blow and it crushed his pinky between the sword and the plastic shell. didn't break the finger but broke the nail and he needed stitches. tip of the fingers are a problem since the inner glove can slip out exposing your fingers. if that didn't happen so easily it would be a great glove. the bands holding the fingers break quite easily and on one of them some plastic parts have begun to chip and break. considering that the company also went bankrupt, i would avoid getting these now (even in second hand and used) as they won't continue to be improved and if they break replacement parts will now be hard to come by

This is a very old review. All of what you say is valid. In the end the fingers were not encased enough, and it was an over-complicated design to maintain. I used mine for a while, but swapped back to my Infinities with the fingers taped in.

On a scale from Red Dragon to ProGauntlet, where would you place the Konings gloves? (I currently own a pair of spes heavies for longsword, and the aforementioned Konings for everything else.)

  • @colleptic

In the middle. I left out some gloves, because the video was so long with them. We have about three people who use them at our school...I think only one uses them for longsword regularly. The cool thing is I have borrowed them, and they are all in different stages of break in. Just before Covid hit, I was going to borrow all three of them in their different stages of break-in, and do a review. I think since you have them you might agree the finger plates are not good enough? I have seen no broken fingers, but a good amount of compression injuries to fingers. My input up to this point was, they are somewhat heavy, bulky, fingers are to wide and force fingers apart, the leather on the outside wears/splits really fast, all three of them start wearing out really fast, long break in, and they are not protective enough for longsword/heavy weapons.

  • @szepi79

@@colleptic I totally agree on the fingerplates issue. I have suffered a finger compression injury in them (it was against the crossguard of a rapier). Since my primary focus is longsword, I don't mind having them, but recently I was thinking about purchasing a new pair, and based on your review, I think the infinity gloves would be a good compromise for me. edit: I forgot to thank for the work you did in the video & answering my question, so: thanks :)

It was pretty simple. It was a very thick spongy yoga/workout matt I bought from a fitness store (thickest I could find). I cut out various strip/lengths, and then pasted them on with rubberized glue (you can see the glue type in my Frankenstein video linked below this one). since the matt was very flexible, I over lapped some of it on the wrist of the glove, to give that more protection too; worked well and did not change the wrist movement. I then put hockey tape length-wise over/down the strips, and between the strips to assist keeping everything in place. It was a good mod.

You don't have the comfort fencing and black-lance. HA! It's a draw in competition of gloves collection sive! My father and I are waiting for our Weapon Master now. We are not getting the Pro gauntlet. We are Koning long time user, at our third pair. It's still our most favorite one-hand two-hand hybrid gloves. We enjoy more one hand fencing these days, so the weapon master seems promising to us. Really excited to get mines.

I am out of funding, but I want to get a hold of a set of Weapon Masters. I think they will be great for single handed weapons, but for heavier weapons, I think they are lacking, and he has sort-of already mentioned that. I have used Konings, and I think we have three people at our school who use them. For longsword, I have seen no major injuries, just a lot of compression injuries to fingers. The biggest complaint I see is their outer leather wear is bad. Before the covid hit, I was going to do a Koning video, for three different versions, all in different break-in states, but then covid hit. ...
