I checked the included antenna for the Heltec V3 and it was tuned for 868 MHz. I trimmed it using my VNA down and got it tuned for 915 MHz. Had to cut around 0.5 cm or 0.2 in. The plastic cover will slide off with a little pressure. I still bought a larger antenna but will now be able to compare them.

Great tutorial, thank you! What is the range you get with the Heltec V3 and standard coiled antenna in an outdoor setting (without a large antenna or router)? The Heltec V3 doesn't has an GPS on board, but is it still possible to share the real time location from your phone via the app? Can you power the Heltec V3 via your phone USB-C or via a power bank? (some power bank need a certain load to not switch off automatically)

  • @Disastercommunications

Line of site can be several miles. If terrain is flat safe to say three to four miles. If you add buildings in between that will decrease. You can use phones location via app. Can power up via usb-c. There are a couple banks that will stay on full time. I’ll try to find one and send you a link. Thanks for watching.

Thanks this was helpful. I was able to reflash the Heltech but could not configure it with the web interface (using Chrome). It stalled with the message: "Messages: Loading... ". I was able to edit the configuration but saving it had no effect. I was able to change the configuration using the Android app. I *think* the problem is that the web-to-serial feature in Chrome doesn't work if you have multiple tabs open to the same page. I've just tried again and was able to get write access to the config but if I opened a 2nd browser tab, it stalled again. Might be worth adding a comment in your video.

I cut a notch in the Heltec case to fit in a SMA connector. The Heltec lacks a power switch, though you could put a switch in between the 18650 battery holder. For now I'm using a small powerbank with my Heltecs. Good value units though not as power efficient as the RAK and T-Echo. Does your18650 battery charge ok through the Heltec when USB power is supplied?

You would want to leave channel one as default if your wanting to see everyone else (not in your group). Also, to see everyone on the internet side of meshtastic you would enable mqtt. I have yet to film that video but there is others out there showing that connection. You will need to have the default channel for that as well. Let me know if that answers your question.

Good job on everything so far....your in the right direction. On the android app, go to the last tab (cog wheel in a box). Then on that page, at the bottom, hit the plus sign in the circle. That will cause the app to search for a list of available bluetooth radios. Select the radio...then that screen will go away...within a few seconds, the radio will "dump" settings into the app...If connected, the cloud at the top right will not have a slash through it but should show a checkmark....let me know if that helps...

Correction/Update: You have to have the Heltec connected to your computer via USB C or the Silicon Labs Port entry will not show up in Device Manager. As always, be certain the antenna is connected first before connecting the USB C power or you will burn up the radio. Also, the Edge browser did not work for me so I used Chrome.

@@Disastercommunications I am communicating between devices, now. However, the Meshtastic documentation uses poor discipline with their nomenclature for certain things like frequency, channels, bandwidth, chat channels vs Lora modem channels, and a few other terms. If they would use the exact same term or words every single time to describe a particular item, it would help, instead of using generic shorthand terms like "channel" to describe two different things in two different places in their documentation.

I had the same problem with one of my Heltec V3 units. No config was saved using Linux, Windows or Android, Bluetooth or USB. It seems to be a timing problem on some V3s where the device reboots before the config is properly written. I tried flashing the latest Meshtastic Alpha release and it started working. YMMV of course, but there seems to be some variation in these devices - some people have reported just retrying over and over until the change 'takes'.
