Helsinki Innovation Districts: Spaces and places for Youth!

The children and young people need more spaces that encourage them to use the city diversely for play, physical
activity and hanging out.
In 2023, new engaging urban solutions were formulated
through experiments. Agile pilots precede and provide inspiration for the renovation and more thorough
development of the urban space. In Mellunkylä, they showcased how the street space
could be enlivened.
Two digital games were piloted within the Mellunkylä agile piloting program. The contents of the games were designed together with children and young people in
the area. Aimed at young people, an augmented reality based ball game brought movement to the street space. An orienteering game for local children and families was tested in collaboration with schools in the area.
Close cooperation was carried out with different services of the City. The agile piloting programme was part of UNICEF’s Child-friendly Municipality work, its one objective is to promote an urban space that feels safe to children.
