Helping Someone Up after a Fall

This video demonstrates how a caregiver can help a patient up after a fall.
This how-to series, made possible by the Norma Oppenlander Fund, is designed to provide persons afflicted with PSP, CBD and related diseases with demonstrations of techniques that can be utilized to make daily tasks easier to perform.

I was looking for these type of videos because I had this happen to me today with my grandmother but she is very weak. She couldn't get to all fours even with my help. I ended up having to put her on a sheet drag her to the front door, where right under the front door there is a step down. I put her feet out of the door and from there was able to push her up from the back to sit her up. Once she was sitting up I was able to lift her up onto her feet, I had her walker in front of her and my son held her walker in place from rolling. It was much easier now that her feet were lower than the rest of her body and it was almost like standing her from a seated chair position. She was able to turn round and come back in the house, assisted of course. Idk if this will help anyone else but I hope it does.

Excellent, when we visit any senior….make a game out of looking for what can be used to get up by oneself. Survey each room. Take screenshots. Think. Devise. What you did with your grandmother is bound to make her feel more secure. Did you determine why the fall in the first place? Front door is great, but don’t lock yourself out. Secure the door open in two ways so door can’t slam shut. Stuff something in the hinge jam, and wrap the door knob so it won’t close on you accidentally. Have shoes near the door, you need shoes as part of rescue. Practice. Make a game of it. Screenshots means picture album, means sharing with others.

So glad to hear that other folks have had the same problems I'm going through with my husband: 210 pounds of dead weight and often not completely lucid. It looks like we've been trying the way illustrated but when the patient can't help and they outweigh you, both of you end up injured.

These vids always show a person who hardly needs any help! The real world is a different picture. When I do manual handly training I never help the carer who is trying to stand me up! It always demonstrates that half these techniques do not work!

This is great for those occasions when someone has fallen in an area with plenty of room to work. In practice, the people I most often have to help to their feet have fallen in the most inaccessible corner imaginable, usually between two immoveable objects.

Thank you for this video. My father is almost 85 years old. He must have a Walker evertime he walks. Lots of times he forgets to bring his Walker. So whenever he falls. He needs 2 people to help him up. When I’m home but my mother isn’t I cannot get him up at all. So hopefully when he falls down next, and only one person is at home with him hopefully this plan will help.

Okay, this only works if they understand what you are trying to have them do. My mother has severe aphasia with frontotemporal dementia and on the rare occasions when she does fall, she knows she wants to get up but she cannot follow what I'm saying to help her. The other thing is - this really only works for a relatively thin person. Helping someone lift their hips from deadweight to a kneeling position is very difficult, especially if the patient does not understand what you're doing.

Thanks for the video. It’s thought provoking. It’s a start, there are other elements to consider. Even if you don’t know ahead of time that your knees won’t cooperate…it’s possible to be surprised, never knew. What we need has to be devised. It’s not in catalogs. Devise. Fall victim has to cooperate. Butt skootch to a room divider overhead beam, attached is a triangle used to hoist up to sitting. You’ve stashed dollar store swimming pool air mattresses under the bed or behind the couch. Two should do it. Roll over or lift to bring underneath you. We need drawbridge furniture attachments. Modified recliner chair as a lift mechanism. Slant board. Telescope up to chair level. Alexa…I fell, send down the plank.

@barb rarick Absolutely true. My mother has been slowly losing strength in all her limbs, and even with me walking her, her legs will simply give out and she will collapse as dead weight. She weighs just over 200lbs. I am not near strong enough to lift her myself, and that means a night of horror for her and me, if lucky she falls near a couch or loveseat we might manage to get her crawling up it with me pulling and/or pushing after a couple of hellish hours for us both and a wracked up back for me. This technique would never work for her. I need advice to lift a deadweight just like the OP.

This isn't a bad technique IF the person has the strength to get on his/her hands and knees. Just be sure before you roll them that the arm they are turning on is tucked as far beneath them as possible. That way, as they roll up and over it, the arm doesn't get caught under them.

The method in the video would only work if there is furniture nearby. A better way is to get the person in a sitting position, then from back put both of your arms under their arms and then lift them onto their feet. Hold them their for a minute until the regain their balance.

What if she is overweight, with knee problems, shoulder tears and spinal problems. She keeps falling and i can't exactly just pull her up from her armpits since she yelps in pain. And i end up letting go of her. Before, i usually just pull her back up after a fall. She falls a lot of times.... And she would always chase me away since my methods are too brutish :V. Mind you, all other methods are kinda hard to implement since her arm movements are kinda not the same anymore, and her knees dont work the same either.... I don't understand though, i did the put her back on feet method easily b4 and she never complained.... Nowadays, The moment though i start putting her up she says ouch.....

My mother slipped off of her bed yesterday. She is very feeble and has had a shoulder replaced and this method would not really work for her. My nephew came over and we lifted with a blanket onto her bed and that worked very well. Then I ordered an inflatable bed for $50. If she's on the floor again I'll work it under her and then inflate it. It's supposed to go to 18 inches and her bed is 22 inches, so I think it will work.

This just happened to me literally 20-30 minutes ago, and my situation is surprisingly similar. My mother has had two surgeries after breaking her left shoulder. Not sure if it was totally replaced but I believe so. She fell out of bed onto her broken shoulder side but luckily no damage to her shoulder, although she has very thin skin and scraped her elbow and chin and bled like a stuck pig... I have no experience with taking care of disabled people so this was just terrifying for me. Her legs are basically useless unless she's in a standing position or goes from sitting from a chair or her bed, but she was in a sitting position on the floor so It was just near impossible for me to lift her up as I'm not strong enough and I didn't want to hurt her healing shoulder. It was such a hassle but I got her up to sitting on her bed and cleaned up the mess and what not. I agree this method wouldn't exactly apply to her because of her only having use of one arm. I also don't have anybody else to help me. I assume you have more experience with caring for a disabled person so I hope you may have any tips for the next time this happens, because she said last time "this won't happen again, I lost my footing" and making all kinds of excuses to save some of her dignity I suppose. But I knew last time wasn't the last time and this time was even worse so I'm just terrified to leave her alone. Again, any tips would be great because once she's on the floor she's literally dead weight and I'm not equipped to effectively handle a situation like that. I hope you and your mother will have better luck in the future.

john papple After I wrote my earlier entry I ordered and received an air bed. It was a Intex Comfort Plush twin sized air bed, if you want to know. Less that $50 with free shipping. A few days later I went to the grocery in the middle of the night. When I got home I found my mother on the floor. She didn't seem to be otherwise injured. I suppose you should call the paramedics if you have any doubt if there is an injury. But if you think she is okay and you just need to get her off the floor, the air bed worked very well. I opened it up and laid it out flat and maneuvered my mother onto it. I plugged it in and turned on the built-in switch and it started to inflate. My mother didn't like the noise, of course. She was too close to the edge and it was going to roll her off so I had to deflate it and get my mother settled into the middle of the air bed. After that it worked like a dream. It elevated her to a level much like her own bed. I could stand her up and turn her and sit her down on her regular bed. My mother is not "dead weight" but I'd say she is only slightly able to help me. I imagine if my mother was totally helpless I could have had a sheet under her on the air bed and pulled her on the sheet over to her own bed. It's much easier with two people. There are helpful videos here on how to give care to the disabled. Keep looking for them until all your questions are answered. I just bought a gait belt. Look at videos about using a gait belt and see if that sort of support of your mother would work for you. I haven't really tried mine yet. If you know a place in the floor where your mother might fall you could put a cushion or a foam mat on that spot on the floor, if you don't think it would trip her up. Like along side the bed if you think she might roll off. On my mother's bed there is a handhold that has feet on the floor and is held close to the bed by bars that slip under the mattress. It is like a mini-rail that can be used as a hand-hold, and it would also stop her from rolling off the bed.

I have the same issue with my grandfather. His one arm is useless due to having his dialysis shunt in it. When he falls I bring a chair over, have him get on his hands and knees, then prop his body to chair, then I help him lift himself up by putting his working "good" arm around my neck & do a 1-2-3 UP. It's worked so far for us. It is hard when you're only working with one arm on a fragile person.

We shouldn't move people without being sure, granted, but if they can move themselves with some guidance, then that's what we should be helping them to do.

"If the person is on their back" ?????

I'm unsure about rolling someone onto their arm, surely that's going to be uncomfortable. Perhaps moving the arm on the side that the person is rolling onto might be more comfortable for them and easier for them to move the arm once they are on their front (a little bit like putting them into the recovery position). Using chairs at the head and the feet of the person maybe a good idea instead of making them crawl to a place to get themselves up (especially with arthritic knees).

This doesn't work for everyone. My mom is 96. She fell and broke her left femur in 2018 and has now has long rod and screws in it. She can't bend that leg or kneel. Occasionally when she falls, usually backwards, she needs to be lifted. I am not strong enough so have to call 911.

Kind of weird you would end the video without showing us any part of the body hiding process. For example, the cutting, the salutation, the dissolving, the hiding of the weapon, and finally the story you’ll tell the police when they arrive. Maybe next time don’t you click bait on a subject as sensitive as this. The authorities are probably only minutes away now, and I haven’t even started cutting. Thanks a lot

NEVER attempt to help an elderly person up if they have fallen. CALL an Ambulance!! Fractures and pain or other internal injuries may not be evident until the next day....even if they say they feel ok. U are not a doctor or have x-ray vision to determine whether or not ..there is an injury...but you could be responsible for making the situation worse...AND what if they fell because they had a quick mini stroke??...and you are helping them up because to U all seems well???...CALL an ambulance.

If they can't get themself into this position via verbal prompts only, something is very wrong. If a person asks for help they are saying, "Can I borrow your muscles, mine are rubbish?" Hooking your arm under theirs is putting strain on these "rubbish" shoulder cuff muscles. They have already told you that their muscles are not up to the job. There is a raised risk of subluxation. Since 1982 in the UK this has been seen as an unsafe system of work and must be justified if something goes wrong.

Nope nope nope never ever lift shift and transfer by pulling or lifting client by their arms. You’ve got to lift them by the torso and avoid breaking or dislocating arm or damaging fragile blood and lymph vessels in arm pit and inner arm. Please take down this video
