Helping a 3-Legged Kitten After Amputation Surgery
Үй жануарлары мен аңдар
*CW: non-graphic post-surgical scar on a kitten, may be upsetting to some viewers* Jez needed amputation surgery after breaking his leg badly as a baby kitten. In this video, I share my experience fostering a three-legged kitten in the days after surgery, and show you that tripod cats can get around BEAUTIFULLY! Jez is doing GREAT and you can see him in his new home at @wolfgang_and_puck

When I was little my family had a three-legged cat named Crash! I found him laying in the middle of the street when I was about 9 years old. He was the sweetest cat and I’m so glad my mom was brave enough to run out into traffic to rescue him

Jeannie Russo He lived to be 22 years old and he passed away peacefully in his bed at my mothers house about 10 years ago. He’s buried under his favorite tree in my mother’s backyard. He will always be missed
I have a tripod kitty! He's the best! He was found as a stray, badly mauled by another cat, and they fixed him up but the shelter was so overcrowded no one caught that he had an untreated wound on his leg until it was too late and infection had set in. An added bonus of tripods missing their back legs is that they can't jump very high, so it's easy to keep him out of things. I did have to make some minor accessibility tweaks to my living area (stairs up to the bed, making sure I got a cat tree that required no big leaps to get to the highest spot) but they're super easy tweaks and totally worth it to give him a great life. Adopt tripods!

I hope youll see this... it has me wondering how they do (or will do) with the litterbox? Once they become on the older side and that squatting or even arthritis starts in the remaining back leg. how do they manage? Or are you not at this point yet? One of mine hurt her back leg, just a muscular thing, but trying to potty every time would re-injure what she had done. After not long i wondered what she would do if i held her in the litter, putting her down enough to feel the litter but still supporting her weight from underneath her belly area - this helped her fully heal! luckily she understood what i was trying to do seemingly instantly. Took a few weeks of setting alarms and inventing the phrase "I have to go pee the cat" but it was all worth it. I kind of wonder if similar support could be done either via person or device for these tripod kitties once they get older, if squatting is the only issue and theyre otherwise healthy?

@@pawprints1986 Thankfully that's not an issue I've run into so far. He had his leg amputated when the vets think he was approximately four years old, and it's been about seven years since then. So far no signs of arthritis, thank god. He did at one point somehow tweak his remaining back leg to the point he could still walk but tried not to if possible for a couple days, and he still managed to use the litterbox just fine then. So far the only problem the litterbox has presented is that tripods have a much larger turning radius than other cats, so he needs an uncovered, largeish box to be able to turn around in it. And not too much litter, since his balance is wobbly. TBH I don't have a plan if he does develop arthritis, because he also contracted FIV from his assault and as cold as it sounds, I don't expect he'll be around that long. Of course, I've heard FIV+ cats only have a 5-year life expectancy after contracting the virus, and he's still spry and perfectly healthy after seven years, so if I'm very lucky arthritis will be a problem I'll have to solve at some point. I guess I'll have to deal with it when it comes!

My cats leg is being amputated because he got hit by a car we thought we were going to have to put him down because we can not afford the costs but a local charity has said they will pay for it and the vets are only charging cost so doing their labour for free he is going into surgery tomorrow!❤️😸💞 I hope he will be ok!!!

My cat had his leg amputated 5 days ago. Seeing him for the first time made me cry, it was stressful for the both of us because it was a traumatic situation. I’ll be honest I still find it difficult because I keep picturing the way he looked before. But I still love him with all my heart. I’m so happy he survived his ordeal. Now he’s back on his 3 feet and healing quite well. And he’s the sassy chatty cat he always was. I can’t wait for his stitches to come out so he doesn’t have to wear a cone all the time and can really get stuck back in to normal life

We are in the process of deciding to complete a partial arthrodesis for ankle repair on our 1.5 yr old cat Valley Blue or amputating. It’s been 4 days since he was hit by a car. He has a wound that needs to heal before it can be splinted for 8 weeks to see if it heals with regained mobility and vet thinks amputation should be a strong consideration. I am torn about the surgery option. We could save his leg but it is an invasive and painful procedure and recovery will be 16 weeks with most in confinement. Whereas amputation could bring short recovery and sooner pain relief. Thank you for this video.

Our kitten is in surgery as we speak , having his rear left leg amputated , after getting it caught and broken and shattered badly outside . we have been crying all day , thinking we had to put our fur baby down , but thank God we were able to get help from the rspca for the costs involved . The relief of being able to save our baby and not bury him is beyond measure , but the pain of it all will take some time to heal for us and our precious baby " Loki ". Thankyou for posting this . Its helped us a lot. xo
Omg I can’t even handle how cute he is! He’s sitting in the background just catting, and the part where he was just suckling....argh, I wanted to kiss him so bad.
Something very fun about tripod cats; without one of the back limbs there, they fit Perfectly against your chest!! Makes them very fun to carry, haha.
I've never had a tripod cat but I do currently have a tripod bunny! He had his hind leg amputated about a month before his 5th birthday. He celebrated his 9th birthday last December and he is still doing great! It's amazing how well these 4 legged animals can do when they loose one of those legs.

I think it's the fact that they don't give up even when they're missing a leg. It really delivers a message.
my friend has a cat with one ear, one eye and three legs (in an accident as a kitten) and he's the happiest kitty ever. his name is Bungle.
Ruthie goes in for her amputation on Monday (36 hours?). An outside kitten that was abandoned then suffered trauma snapping her femur. She’s a bit older but still a kitten. Now an inside cat for sure. Amazing that she crawled to the guy who has two three-legged dogs. 😂❤️

I am going through this now. Was your cat able to go outside again? My cat is 1.5 and an outside kitty. This is a hard decision for us.
I have fostered a little tripod before. she came to me scared, needing comfort, as she had had a very hard life before meeting me. she never fully warmed up to the rest of the family, but she was so sweet to me when it was just us. she found a forever home, and i have a feeling she has made a very sweet companion. she did get along well even though she didn’t have a front leg...
He's one of the most beautiful kittens I've ever seen. You did good
I'd echo her sentiment about watching an animal go through an amputation like this. I had a dog who had the majority of her lower jaw removed and it was very emotional to watch her be confused and the physical difference of her. She did bounce back well as an 8 year old dog, so pets are resilient and strong
My grandparents recently adopted a 3 yo tripod poodle mix! I'm so excited to meet him soon
My kitten (less than one year old still), was born out in our garage with only three and a half legs (one was a stub, it was there but heavily webbed and useless) and so I took her inside and she ended up getting the stub amputated because the bone was breaking through the skin and it got infected. She is our fastest cat even with just three legs and is so so happy! (Her name is tiger lily) I think the hardest part was her limited freedom for the week after surgery.
So glad he got adopted. Happy for him!
This video goes out to all those people out there with disabilities, from being handicapped to having mental disorders. Jez is your hero.
