The heat has been killer here in central Indiana. Watering every day and sometimes twice. Supposed to get down to 85° this week. Yay.

You really hit home today! I'm in south central WI and have only had the hose out once this summer so far. I've moved my planted pots undercover when rain is coming just trying to get them to dry out. I've only had a handful of days I could actually work in the garden,

Thank you for addressing this topic. In WI we have had constant rain and it has taken a toll on plants. I have started to have a problem with earwigs in the pots destroying plants quickly. Sprinkling Sluggo in the planters as well now but that takes time to work.

Good luck! Make sure you’re using Sluggo Plus - regular Sluggo isn’t all that effective on earwigs.

Yeah this heat has been brutal for most of the country. We (Philly region) went from a super wet spring to a really dry period. Hoping for some well needed rain tonight.

In Indiana, we had the heat dome, but none of the rain! Just day after day of high temperatures and scorching winds. I watered every twice a day just to keep everything alive. Thank goodness the heat has broken!

Here in Texas the weather has been pretty crazy as well! I have yellow and red calibracoas. They are in plastic hanging baskets. The red ones are are coming back wonderfully but the yellow are still in shock… they seem more sensitive to the crazy weather. Great video as always!

Hi, I bought all petunias at Lowe’s and Home Depot in April. I put them down nice and beautiful some in the flowerbeds. A lot of them in the containers probably over 100 of them is dying by the hours one minute they beautiful next minute they’re all dead I take care of it water as needed, everything else looks beautiful, except the petunias. I had bad luck with them every single year. my sun patient inpatient vincas looking really nice.thanks

I’d suggest you visit a local nursery and talk to them… there may be regional issues you may be contending with and a pro could help guide you… especially if it’s a pest or climate issue. Have you tried Wave or Supertunia petunias? If you’re getting a random multi-pack from Home Depot, they might not be varieties that have the vigor you may need. That said, the fact that you are having success with vinca and impatiens could indicate that your petunias aren’t getting enough water. Petunias need a lot more watering than the other two. If you’re in a hot climate, that is even more likely… I know a lot of people in Texas and Arizona who see petunias as shoulder season crops because they simply cannot give them the amount of water they need in the summer. If people around you are having success growing petunias, I’d also suggest talking to them… they may have cracked the code for your area.

@@UpNorthGardenMI. Supertunias are the best! Their vigour and lack of the need to deadhead make them the way to go!

Thank you so much for this timely advice! I did out off fertilizing my because of the rain. Today I had family over for the afternoon so I am about to get at it tomorrow!! And I did have that bucket problem with 2 of my planters ugh. I finally just put them under the overhang of the house and counted on the shifting wind to bring them some rain but not all of it. It seems to have worked. Also, the calibrachoas ugh! They were doing really well into about day 3 of the rain now not so much. I don’t usually have good luck with them but my daughter in law got me a gorgeous orange and blue (Detroit Tigers?) hanging basket that I transferred to a bigger pot. I picked up a moisture meter too hoping to keep a closer eye on that because I am not so diligent.

Sounds like we’ve had the same weather as you. I had to get out the moisture meter since my finger doesn’t seem to be as calibrated as it used to be. I’m so glad you mentioned to fertilize even if they’re still wet. I have another question, during the heatwave, so many of my blooms are smaller, they’re in abundance, but the petunias, calibrachoa, bidens and even nemesia have small blossoms. I thought I did a good job keeping them watered 🤔. Thanks for sharing your knowledge, you’re one of my favorite KZreadrs.

As long as they’re still producing, I wouldn’t worry about the bloom size - they might have been affected by the dramatic changes in temperature.

Crazy. It didn’t like something - if it didn’t recover, I’ll probably inspect the tuber - thinking I may have overwatered. Between heat and overwatering, that might be what did it in.

Great video. Confirmed what I have been trying to do with them. What about fertilizing annuals that are planted in the saturated ground? Should I let them dry out or fertilize them? I have lantana, marigolds, zinnias, and bubblegum petunias in the ground.

I wouldn't be too worried about the lantana, marigolds, and zinnias -- wait until they dry out a bit. The Bubblegum is a tough call... the good thing is that once the moisture gets back to normal, it should bounce back quickly.

Thanks so much Corey for your encouragement! Zone 3 Manitoba and we are waterlogged too. I have large pots on my deck that had water showing above the soil! The pots have a cavity in the bottom for extra water so no drainage holes. Hubs drilled 4 holes in the bottom and water poured out like a faucet!! 😳💦😳. Question, would sprinkling water soluble granules on the soil surface work as the rain washes through? 🇨🇦💦🇨🇦

I discovered a pot were forgot to drill holes in… I think I caught it in time. I avoid “self-watering” pots without drainage holes for that exact reason… another option would have been to drill drainage on the side of the pot at the level of the platform/reservoir (but that would be hard to gauge when it’s full. The granules should help. 🤞

Thank you so much, Corey! It's so mind boggling sometimes with this crazy up and down weather! I'm in Nebraska! I do have a question, if you don't mind? I just started seeing Japanese beetle bugs AGAIN two days ago for the first time this year. How do you suggest I treat those! I actually kill them when I see them, but is there something I could put on my plants to keep them off of them?

What about the perennials? Should we fertilize them now too? Some of my new hydrangeas have brown dried up leaves. Should I snip those off?

  • @UpNorthGardenMI

    @UpNorthGardenMI

    8 күн бұрын

I usually fertilize my perennials with time-release pellets in spring and mid-summer (except sedum and echinacea which I don’t fertilize) and in the spring I add a layer of compost. So if you haven’t fertilized them, I’d do it. You can occasionally do water-soluble if that’s easier, but don’t feed them weekly.

I love superbena verbena and find it difficult to know where to deadhead. Would love a video on explaining that if possible. I think the spent blooms when all the petals drop look the same as the buds. Am I crazy? 🥴
