I gotta say...I really found Arthur rejecting Mary to be...strangely comforting. It felt...better. Instead of all the effort you go through, that he would be the one to let Mary go instead of her letting Arthur go...it shows a character maturation...it's melancholy but hell, the line delivery, the characterization of Arthur and the dynamic of him finally cutting that thread on his own...well...ultimate fate aside, he gave himself some closure with that variation. :(

I was really surprised they didn't differ his journal entry if you reject her, after receiving her letter in Beaver Hollow. I declined because I hated the idea of Arthur thinking himself a fool, but he's self-deprecating either way. Took the relief of closure away for sure :/

In my first playthrough, I rejected her the first time and I still got another letter from her. Rejected her the second time and she's like "oh OK I miss you though". Damn, she's clingy. The content of her final letter is pretty much the same though whether you helped her or not.

Well it's too deep and vague for their current situation without any prequel, I couldn't say manipulative since Mary in exchange asked Arthur (for a date?) to go to the theater, you see Arthur loved, liked, and wanted to Marry her but his father is against it cause he's an outlaw. She wasn't using Arthur, she was not formally scheming about how they can properly get back together and convince Arthur to leave his "bandit" side and start a new life with her somewhere

You Gotta respect Arthur for saying no, Mary was leading him on in the sense that she wanted him to change even though deep down she knew that he would never truly change. He saw through Mary's hypocrisy & realised that her way of life & the things that she was justifying weren't so different to the questionable morality that she claimed that Arthur had. Arthur was just tired of fighting for a lost cause & I don't blame him. She's ultimately using Arthur as a means to help her family, the same family that shunned Arthur & treated him like garbage. While Arthur is far from a perfect man he didn't deserve to be strung along like a puppet just so a family that is barely being held together can keep gambling & whoring whilst Mary has the gall to question & criticise Arthur's morality... People who live in glass houses Mary, shouldn't throw stones, otherwise you'll lose the help of the one man who has not only helped you numerous times in the past but has loved you despite all of the above. Great game 10/10

It was on this mission that I understood when Abigail said "Oh Arthur" and he said "Don't oh Arthur me" ... Everything makes sense now

Mary came off as just using Arthur since she has no one to lean on, thats the feeling i got the first time and by judging her tone and the dear god annoying "Oh Arthur" i rejected her

Accepting to help makes you feel good. But rejecting to help her feels more like the right thing to do, cutting off the impossible love. I would know.. Then again, one can say the Strange Man is very close to Arthur, by then.

They both clearly still have feelings for each other, part of Arthur wishes he left the gang and settled down. If he did he would still be alive.

It breaks my heart that Arthur really did want to leave with Mary but felt he had to take care of John and his family first, you can see he’s desperate and Mary doesn’t believe him. Overall I think it’s a good thing he didn’t go with her and he helped John and his family start again before he died, and I’m glad he got to have that last bit of quality time with Mary before he found out he was sick.

NPCs a lot more attractive than Mary Linton Arthur should pursue instead: Sadie, Mary Beth, or that woman those 2 twins are fighting over.

I'd say having Arthur walk away is actually the smartest thing to do, because what I saw from Mary, she was the type of woman who just use him whenever she was in trouble. Perhaps she missed him, perhaps even loved him at one time. But she let her family's opinion of him decide not to be with him. But then again Arthur wasn't right either, because what he showed is that he preferred The Outlaw life over her. There was fault on both sides. And usually when a break-up happens, there's always fault on both sides. If there aren't, that means either the man or the woman is perfect, and that's impossible because there are no perfect people in this world.

And in the end all they want to do was have a normal life in the Free Country which its superiors wouldnt let them have so they have to find their own way. Now these "LAW" MEN you speak of. They ran things through blackmail, ransom, and betrayal, now if thats something you think is just then you need to play the game again. We all know who the true heroes are.

@Diamond Beau also im the story arthur didnt kill civillians, dutch did kill an innocent girl. But thats not arthur. If you killed a civillian, thats on you as a player. Theres also an honor system. You choose if your character has good or bad morale.

Other than Mrs. Linton, Sadie is the best choice. She could really handle Arthur and his life. Mary-Beth is beautiful, but only 21, while Arthur is 36.

If you ignore her with THAT mission she sends you a letter saying sorry and she gets why you wouldn’t help her. And says she’ll always love you and gives you some rings she had of Arthur’s and a picture of when they were young and Arthur looks mad different

I chose not to help her at all. She reminded me of this girl I used to know. Ugh...It's all in the past now.

The declining to help daddy is badass. Arthur is just cutting her manipulative bullshit short right there.

I was blind to how manipulative she really is when I first played it. I just wanted Arthur to be happy with her so bad.

Rather than kill off arthur... they should have got him to help john get out, then meet up with mary. In the epilogue... mary should have wrote to john, saying arthur died a few years ago and that she looked after him until he died

It just hurts now to see Arthur and to here him... he really is the best character ever I didn’t think I’d like another character better then commander shepherd but even she didn’t make me feel or impact me like Arthur did gotta give major props to rockstar they know how to freaking write a character...

This is so touching in a way. I wanted Mary and Arthur to have a child, settle down, and live a good farm life, like like how John tried to.

I wish for that too but now John is living the life Arthur wanted a long time ago. Hence the ring John gave Abigail which was originally Mary's. Arthur inspired John in a sense which was touching and motivating.

@@SharinganRebirth All that makes RDR1 so much more tragic. And all the tragedy happened because Agent Ross managed to track John down after he went after Micah's gang and pretty much wiped them out. Apparently there was indeed wisdom in Dutch's early sayings, in the end, revenge really turned out to be a "fool's game". John wouldn't ever need to hunt his old friends down and wouldn't have been murdered, and Jack would not have became an outlaw exacty like Arthur, Abigail and John didn't want him to.

You can hear the disappointment in Arthur’s voice after she asked for help again. Instead of her asking to get back together she disappointed him.

A words for not sincere when she said that it went Arthur a talk to her she wouldn't listen to him she tried to justify a change of mind she never had any intentions of running away with him has nothing to do with what how long he was gone read between the lines when interacting with this character everything's you says is in manipulative or outright deceit and dishonesty

She does write you a letter if you don't help her the first time. Jamie comes home on his own and she still thanks you because she realizes that if you helped her, Jamie could be somewhere else.

I speak from experience, it’s not worth it. You can be happy for a few days, weeks or even months, but it’s just a matter of time until your toxic BF/GF manipulates and hurts you on a deeper level. Walk away, although it really hurts, you’re moving on and healing for someone that actually deserves you.

@@NAGASMINE she isnt a thot, shes the opposite, shes the type of WOMAN who wants to have a family, caring father and husband that will be there. She wants him to give up the gangster life and be with her, but Arthur is already married to the gang. The truth is, whether or not you want them to be together, it cant, wont, and shouldnt happen, until theyre both dead and at peace, then they can be together for eternity. Hes cursed and shes a broken girl, great recipe for a love story and a hell of a story. Rockstar did amazing.

@Diamond Beau tbh i shipped Sadie and Arthur they have the chemistry and shes vulnerable after her loss and she needs a man to comfort her. But Mary is Arthurs true love so. The story it goes with is correct.

Those two walking into that bright ass light makes me feel happy

As I said before if I was Arthur I would have been in the smashing stage with Mary :)

At 18 centuries,theres no cure for TB, mostly just not making it worse with the symptoms

After getting her letter to meet her in the city, if you never meet her, she sends you another letter to the camp by the cave and pretty much says goodbye forever and the mission disappears

Sure you can say she’s manipulative, but rather than face the ugly truth I’m happy Arthur was able to make the memories of going to that show with her

You missed a scene. There's a convo if you just let time run out too when she asks you to help her daddy. And yes she still writes if you said no the first time but instead of thanking you she says she doesn't blame you or something along that line.

Oh, Arthur...

I helped her the first time for old time sake for both Arthur and Mary but when she was in St Denis and was asking for help again and tried to play that sad shit on Arthur. I had to say no, she wanted comfort and someone to lean on but after leaving Arthur for another man, simply because it was the better choice in her life. She had no right whats so ever coming back and asking for favors.

I never help Mary. In my all my playthroughs. Mary is the definition of a woman that strings you along then ditches you the second she gets what she wants.

She used him for her brother and she used him for her father. After being nice she sends him a good bye letter. She didn't seem to care at all about his feelings. She just came back when she wanted things.

When I played it we went to a different theater and even her lines were different after the show

"You're an idiot", "you're brainless", "Arthur, stop", "Arthur, come on!" Arthur walking away from her without agreeing to help her is so satisfying. If it currently wasn't my first playthrough, I would've never agreed to her offer. God, she makes me mad. Arthur deserves better. I like the idea of him realizing how awful her family was to me, that she treats him like a fool, and that he doesn't need her in his life. And even when you hesitate and she starts, "Don't do it for my Daddy, do it for me." You treated him awfully and still do. Seriously, he's like a clown for her errands.

I know Arthur's a kind and caring person inside but remember he's lived a criminal's life since he was 14 (I think), and despite Mary loving him, she has morals that prevented her from living with him because he wasn't a "good" person. But she also is desperate to help her family that she loves dearly, just like Arthur that loves his family, the gang. And in the end they both choose their family instead of eachother. Still I understand why he could reject her demands for help. So I just always help her in the memory of what got lost.

If i had a nickel for every oh arthur i would have enough to shut Dutch up with "1 more score"

I declined because I felt like she was taking advantage of Arthur. He wasn't good enough for her unless it suited her, so it felt good to decline helping her and her hypocritical dad. Crazy how this game makes you emotionally involved.

My fiancee and I have been saying "Oh, Arthur" all the time since this part.

I missed this mission got a letter in chapter 6 with a letter from her with a wedding ring and a picture of Arthur and Mary when they were young but the letter said I probably wouldn't get this letter since I didn't help her out the second time and now I feel like a piece of shit....

I declined to help Mary, my impersonation of Arthur is not a friend zone type of guy. But then I played the mission again just to beat up that guy and get the brooch for free, also tied him and threw him into the water.

I wore the legendary bear hat and the legendary white bison chaps on this mission and she said “ you sure dress differently than you used to”

That's an awesome bit of detail. I've also been told that if one wears any outfit made by the trappers that various NPCs and the gang members at camp will comment on it.
