There should be a stenciled serial number at minimum and a stamp in many cases. He may even want to do an online search for that serial every so often. Also at gun auction sites.

My dude.. I have wanted help with this same problem since acquiring my own izzy to the point its kind of a backburner life goal of completion to restore it with the original scope. That is if I could ever find it, I'm okay if I don't its still a good rifle but it would be so cool to do. Will definitely make use of that function when its available.
