Helmuth Hübener's stand against Hitler | with Matt Whitaker

*Today, 10/27/22, is the 80th Anniversary of the execution of Helmuth Hübener.*
We know we say this often but this truly has to be one of the most fascinating stories that we've heard on Saints Unscripted. Matt Whitaker joins us to share the story of Helmuth Hübener. Helmuth was a 16-year old Latter-day Saint living in Nazi Germany. Helmuth started writing anti-Hitler, anti-Nazi pamphlets in order to spread truth about the horrors of Nazi Germany. He was putting his life at risk by listening to the radio to hear the information and would certainly be executed if he wrote and distributed any anti-Hitler pamphlet. However, as a firm believer in truth, Helmuth chose to risk his life. He was able to hide his cover for awhile but in the end, was caught. Watch the episode to learn what happened next!!
Matt Whitaker is teaming up with Angel Studios to create a mini-series of Helmuth Hübener's story and we are STOKED!!! Check out the links below!!

Was the book Elie Wiesel? It's a pretty popular one for high school teachers to use since he was a teenager at the time. I read it like fifteen years ago so I really don't remember any details except for him being a teenager and looking at himself in the mirror after spending years in a concentration camp and thinking he saw a lifeless corpse instead of himself.

Thank you for shining light on this story. It's not one that makes church officials look good, but there's room for more understanding. We can't condone church officials failing to do the right thing, but we can be understanding. Understandable, but not OK. This teenager on the other hand - amazing! And I can't help but remember someone else that said "remember me", who was also executed by religious/political officials conspiring against him - because he spoke the truth.

Helmuth was certainly an inspiring individual. This video downplays the fact that there were MANY LDS Nazi/Hitler supporters both in Germany and N.America, even members of the 1st presidency (looking at you J. Reuben). Helmuth was an outlier and the church actually made efforts to suppress the story of Helmuth in the many decades after the dust from WWII settled. Tell the full truth of the story please, warts and all.

It wouldn’t be prudent for them too (to say the least). Doing so would put the lives of all Latter-day Saints and their families, in these countries, at risk.

Helmuth was excommunicated from the church. The church did not support him. Unfortunately. He was reinstated much much later after his death.

It’s what ethicists call “supererogatory.” It’s beyond what’s required of a moral person. Heroically moral. Not required of God, primarily because it’s like holding people accountable for trying to keep their families alive because of the evil of OTHER people. The moral contradictions are stark. Much like the difference between the Nephites defending themselves and the Ant-Nephi-Lehis refusing to defend themselves.

@@towardcivicliteracy Anti-nephi-lehi people were the greater heros for sure. Having the courage to protect your family - nonviolently. That takes the ultimate courage. True, it cannot be forced or even expected. It's beyond those things. Think Gandi, MLK Jr, etc. Think Jesus saying Love Your Enemy, and then living that by praying FOR his enemies as they tortured him to death. The Anti-nephi-lehi story shows that it can work, cost less lives than violent battle, and change hearts - real justice. Best story on the book of Mormon

@@leem3299 "The Anti-nephi-lehi story shows that it can work, cost less lives than violent battle, and change hearts - real justice. Best story on the book of Mormon" Yes, but just to clarify, it's not clear to me from the scriptures, that such heroic morality is always a good idea, generally. Though I don't know of any scripture that suggests this directly, it seems very plausible to me that violently defending oneself and others is not merely justified, on an individual level, but necessary for God's broader purposes--particularly to preserve a people in the earth and have a fighting chance to save other of his children while in mortality. There are also many, many pretty clear examples from the Book of Mormon, that God will generally command non-violent measures, if at all possible. (For example, the "exodus cycle" found in the Book of Mormon, where the people of God simply fled from wicked and/or tyrannical people.) But, those options might not be available, or the people are "ripe for destruction" (i.e., the justice of God can no longer be withheld).

There is racism, homophobia, antisemitism, and Islamaphobia and are not too broadly defined. Racism = “Prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against a person or people on the basis of their membership in a particular racial or ethnic group, typically one that is a minority or Marginalized” Homophobia = “encompasses a range of negative attitudes and feelings toward homosexuality or people who are identified or perceived as being lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender” Antisemitism = “Hostility to or prejudice against Jewish people” “hate or strong dislike of Jews, or actions that express hate of dislike of Jews” Islamaphobia = “the fear of, hatred of, or prejudice against the religionofIslam or Muslims in general, especially when seen as a geopolitical force or a source of terrorism.” Look under google to find these definitions for yourself, don’t take my word for it - I found it under these sources: Oxford Language dictionary and Wikipedia which used the same dictionary when quoting a definition.
