If you were wondering, I left out the weight on the video by mistake. I weighed this particular example, and it came out to be 2.4 LBS, or 1.1Kg . That is impressive given its size.

For your information : the handwritten marking of this helmet is "小"(sho/small), so its a 小号(sho-go/small size) helmet. There are also “大” (dai) marked large sized helmets, but both are becoming rare today. Thansks for posting!

Hey, thanks for this post. I have one of these & had had it for over 20yrs before finding a stamped mark on the lower inside rim, which is exactly like the 'small' kanji. Seems to have been one of the helmets repurposed for Thai(?) army use by being fitted for a US M1 liner. Cheers.

It’s very interesting that they made these out of chromoly considering that in the postwar years Japanese manufactures popularized using chromoly in bike frames, resulting in a majority of steel framed bicycles in production today being made out of chromoly

Just got mine, same liner system as yours and the leather is a little dark but pliable, even has the similar painted cartouche towards the rear of the helmet. It came with a yellow star army helmet cloth cover but has a delicate rip on the front edge, so will not be taking the cloth cover off to verify the inner stamping. Mine has some additional small writing in yellowish white paint inside the helmet brim but it is pretty chipped up and may have been scrapped off if reissued to several people. The broad type chin straps are partially there but 2 are cut at a diagonal probably indicating the helmet was removed from the deceased while they were laying face down.

Got a reproduction from IMA due to the MUCH lower price (50 usd) but I also wanted a helmet that I could touch and not feel like I had to handle it like a delicate baby. Got to say after looking at it and this video everything on the replica is spot on and a great first addition to my beginning collection. One thing though that I'm kind of sad that I can't find any information on is the small crest on the crown of the helmet. You can see it in the video from 1:58 onward. That ridge at the top of the helmet. For some reason that surprised me as I'd never noticed it before and didn't know if it was an old holdover from when the Japanese were using the Adrian helmets.

There was no such thing as the Japanese Marines. You are probably thinking of the Naval Landing Forces, however this was not its own branch and was part of the navy, as the name suggests. There were only two branches of the Japanese military, the army and navy. Also, NLF helmets were not different from typical navy helmets.

interessing to see that they both used an efficient steel alloy + tryed to make a 3 points chin-strap (even though it turned out to be far from perfect) what about the mass/weight? on the average, or more on the lighter side?

I made a pinned comment, but no, it's actually pretty dense given its size. This particular model came out at 2.4 LBS or 1.1 Kg.. I would absolutely love to ballistic test one of these, but would feel awful unless it was an example that was structurally sound, but aesthetically fucked.

@@MikeB128 aside from the Steel grade (and thickness wich might be beetween 1.1 and 1.3mm with this helmet's weight) do we have other informations related to the shape process and the potential heat-treatment? Because thoose two last thing seem to be the only two missing factors to be able to know how to build a "perfect" shell replica.

You had two types of Japanese ''marines''. The first type of Japanese marines were actually the Naval Landing Force, which were not quite the marines of the USA or even the UK, but more a sort of advanced landing party, made up of members of the crew of a ship, and were in some ways more like the Navy Seals. The second type were the Special Naval Landing Forces which were even more like the Navy Seals and the Royal Marines of the UK; the US Marine Corps is strange in that it is not actually under the Navy itself, as marines usually are, but under the Department of the Navy which controls both the actual US Navy, the US Marine Corps and the US Coast Guard. The Special Naval Landing Forces were raised from the men at the naval barracks, the Naval Barracks Units, were sailors were trained and unlike the British Royal Marines were still actually just a type of sailor who had more extensive training in land-based warfare (just as the sailors on ships did hence the Naval landing Force mentioned above). As well as the helmet above and the Adrian one, they also apparently used Brodie-style helmets as well during the earlier SIno-Japanese war but I have not really found any photos to back that up; the Brodie helmet was popular with their Chinese enemies though (who also used Stahlhelms).

Leutnant Ale just buy a Hiki, you can get it fixed up by Alexander and Sons restoration if you want proper color/markings. Doubtful you’d find a Nakata for a good price. World war supply has a bad liner, and the ties are too short, and IMA won’t be much better if at all judging from their other Japanese repros.
