Hells Angels and The Mafia: Similarities and Differences | Michael Franzese

Ойын-сауық

In today's episode, we delve into a group that's often being associated with the Mafia Cosa Nostra. Many wonder if other groups possess the same level of organization, formality, and intricate systems. One such group that stands out is bikers organization Hells Angels. During my time behind bars, I had the opportunity to get to know one of their members intimately, Chuck Zito. Join me as we explore the inner workings of the Hells Angels and shed light on their unique code of conduct. To gain deeper insights, we'll delve into an eye-opening article titled "Living By The Code: Rules That All Hells Angels Have To Follow" while I provide my own perspective on how its similarities and differences with the Mafia.

Many years ago, an uncle of mine worked at a parts house and met and became friends with members of a local Hells Angles club. They came to do business with the parts house and was very impressed with the help and respect my uncle showed them. They stuck with him and invited him to several events, including the Sturgis ride. Of coarse he never went, but they respected that. When a prospect decided to be an idiot one night and mark up the parking lot with tire marks, they made the prospect clean the lot with a small cleaning brush. My uncle asked why they did that. He was told it was because the prospect disrespected my uncle and their relationship with him.

Michael, as a retired California cop (32 years), the Hells Angels were easy to deal with as long as your approach was one of respect, being upfront on the reason for the stop, not resorting to minor violations (which should be overlooked), and understanding their chain of command/culture. Knowing the difference between a panhead and a shovelhead may have helped, too. I can see two bottles of your wine from my couch as I write this! Wishing you the Best!

They then proceeded to help me pull the thermostat out of my overheated car. Great guys and taught a younger me something about how to diagnose certain engine issues. Both were Hells angels. Back in the 70's I often went to a club where Hells Angels hung out as well. I remember one night I went up to the bar. A few others were waiting and I started talking to a girl in front of me. Next thing one of the Hells Angels came up and was staring at me in an uncomfortable way. He later came over to where we were sitting and invited the 4 of us to one of their apartments. We, of course, very wary. We were nervous but we actually had a great time. The girl had told the guy with her I had been respectful. 🙏🏻. Loved the video Michael. God Bless!

A lot of the Biker Gangs like Hell's Angels were formed because groups of army vets(particularly the Vietnam War) sought camaraderie & brotherhood like they had on the front lines. But when they got home they were hated by the public and had hard times assimilating.

  • @jody6851

    @jody6851

WWII vets weren't hated at all. This statement is totally false. This wasn't like after the Vietnam War which was strongly opposed by at least half the country with Vietnam vets getting stigmatized because of these political passions. WWII vets were honored, and if anyone was hated or at least raised suspicions, it was an able-bodied man who didn't serve and somehow got a deferment from the military during WWII for no apparent reason. However, some vets came back with PTSD as with all wars, and some couldn't find good fulfilling jobs with the skills they had to offer the civilian world upon returning (watch the classic 1946 film "Best Years of Our Lives" to see a great portrayal of that and the difficulty of WWII vets transitioning back to civilian life), and couldn't quite cope with their return to a humdrum conventional and "normal" life after all the intensity and horrors they had experienced in war. That's what motivated the first Hell's Angels.

The rest of the country had grudging respect or outright sympathy for the thankless task that was IMPOSED upon them. HOWEVER....one reason viet-vets had so much hard-times transitioning and such was there was no Fanfare waiting for them like their dads got back in the 40s. I’m rewatching Miami Vice, my favorite show as a kid, and two seasons in I’m realizing they killed on average about 5 people per episode 😂 I love old tv westerns. Between Marshal Dillon, The Rifleman and the Cartwright family they killed more people than cancer. My issue with SOA and I watched every episode, is writer Kurt Sutter. He had flashes of brilliance with The Shield and Sons but he has a tendency to lean into shock value especially rape and especially man on man rape. It’s a theme on every show he does. He also paints his lead characters into these insane situations where there’s no way out then some magical federal agency shows up and tells them “we’ll get you out of this IF you do what we say”. It’s hysterical.

I was an apprentice with a couple of guys who were Angels, in Joburg, South Africa. We were friendly, and sometimes they'd have a beer with us, etc. One day, before the Easter Weekend, I was supposed to go home 1600 km's away, but there was a cockup at the bank and I couldn't get my bankbook updated so I couldn't draw my money (dating myself here). So I couldn't go home. There I was, all forlorn, sitting at home, when one of the guys came past. He saw my bike, and knew that I was supposed to be heading home so he came in to enquire. I told him the story, he asked whether I had the bucks, and I assured him I did. He pulled out a bunch of money out of his pocket. It was his bike payment, he was on his way to the bank but I could have it until after the weekend when the bank had sorted their shit out. I saw my mommy and daddy that weekend, had a great time and paid him back early the next week. My claim to fame - an Angel gave me his bike payment because I needed it.

Very good presentation. I lived in Oakland for over 40 years and used to see the Hells Angels almost on a daily basis since my path to work took me past their headquarters on Foothill Blvd. I used to see Sonny Barger many times outside the clubhouse chatting with other chapter members. They were always respectful, had their bikes neatly parked, and would actually wave back if you waved at them as you passed. Sonny had some run-ins with the Oakland police and he did a couple of prison sentences, but he really unified the Northern California chapters and rival biker violence pretty much dwindled away. Sadly, he passed away last year in 2022. It will be one year on June 29. He was kinda like Huey Newton. They were both considered criminals, but they had more good to offer to the community and the police did not like the way they could inspire and unify people.

The Hell's Angels ran drugs for the mob ( maybe they still do) . They also have a reputation for being very abusive to their women. I think what is written on that website and what really goes on in the club are two different things.

My understanding is, the Hell's Angels originated when groups of WWII veterans wanted to carry forward with the camaraderie they had had as soldiers and motorcycle clubs were formed which over time morphed into groups such as the Hell's Angels (although I understand there are several other groups as well with similar initiation rites, rules of conduct, hierarchical structures, etc.)

We agree on many things, Michael, but this not one of them. I was at Laughlin in April of 2002, which is a date permanently etched in my brain. There was no regard for the innocent people, many who were older, in that incident. I grabbed the two people that were with me, and pulled them to the other side of the casino when I saw the first knife appear. Then shots rang out, and patrons were running for any exit they could find. The 1% patch says it all. They're no different than any other thug, gang member, or criminal that continues to plague our society.

You’re aware the Hell’s Angels are different from Chapter to Chapter? Yes they tend to attract unsavory characters, but not all of them are like this and sadly the bad ones give them a bad rap. I used to be one, got inducted while in grad school after I testified on behalf of region’s leader got hit by a car and they tried to blame him for the accident. He was actually innocent and I was just doing my part to vouch under oath what I saw as a witness. I used to drive a bike then as it is far cheaper than driving a car, and when you’re in grad school you are a broke AF. While I rode with them, I can personally attest we never did any crimes. Did we have some shady guys? Sure, but again while we rode we never held up anyone, robbed anywhere, no violence or bar fights. We were a very loyal unit and at most if trouble was about to start, all it took was someone to realize they were sorely outnumbered that they backed down. I’m sorry to hear you had that experience. I will admit that yeah some clearly get violent/act like thugs. But not all of them. And we most certainly were not drug runners or drug lords or “expanding territory”

@@lawrencetalbot8346 Unless there are more than a few "bad chapters." I grew up on Long Island's North Shore (though I did manage to visit the South Shore from time to time, even a few times one of Michael's favorite nightspots in Long Beach "Channel 80"). I live in Virginia now, but I used to bicycle the North Shore's hills every weekend for exercise during the warm months. There was a great snack place on 25A in Woodbury called Al Dowd's Beefalo where I'd often stop for a beer or a buffalo burger along the way to recharge. Arch rivals of the Hell's Angels -- the Pagans -- would also hang out at Al Dowd's. I'd come in with my 12-speed bicycle and they'd be there with their giant choppers and I had no problem socializing and having pleasant conversations with them. But the Hell's Angels chapter on Long Island saw the Pagans as invaders of their territory. This eventually led to a full turf war at what was then the Vanderbilt Caterers in Plainview, LI just south of the LI Expressway, now a restaurant and horse betting parlor called Race Palace. There was a big convention of bikers and tattoo artists held in 2002 with the Hell's Angels prominent among the attendees. But when Pagans showed up, a giant riot ensued with many injuries, extensive damage and at least one person murdered stabbed to death with a knife. I recall there were hundreds of arrests of Hells Angels, Pagans and many others. I never saw Pagans riding on LI roads again, though I've never seen Hells Angels on LI roads, either, though I'm sure it was just timing. Al Dowd's was eventually torn down as well.

He doesn't talk much about it but one of the things he did say was he kept his mouth shut and when he was in prison they watched his back because of it. Saved his life and destroyed it as he says. You should do book reviews as well. You were supposed to be a doctor so I know you have read some great mafia books. You already do movie reviews and 85% of those movies were books first. For example The Godfather a known classic, Mario Puzo in my opinion doesn’t get the credit he deserves for writing that masterpiece and I know it’s cliche to say the book is better but in an interesting instance like this when the movie was groundbreaking success it still doesn’t come close to how phenomenal the book truly is. The side by side formation, the bike sounding like thunder. I Wanted to ride from that moment on. I used to sneak my dads Honda CB 400 out when I was like 13,14 years old. He got rid of it. Ended up getting my own bike as an adult and have owned a bike always since. I'm not HA material but riding keeps me right. As a veteran now riding is an especially good way to go, we seem to find a lot living through riding motorcycles.

Buck up. God has honored you with the inner strength to cross "the desert" alone, with no certainties, feeling abandoned perhaps, with that feeling described in the Santana lyrics: I ain't got nobody that I can depend on. The ability to cross the wilderness of the soul to reach the garden, clarity of understanding and knowledge that you have never been alone is in you. Integrity gets you across. You've got this, if you want to find your self and the truth of it. You won't be sorry thay you chose, unremembered now, to serve God in this way. Love does not die in the dark. Michael I really enjoyed this video as I am really interested in the history of the Mafia and American Outlaw Motorcycle culture. I just finished George Christie’s book ‘Exile On Front Street’. And am currently reading ‘Patriot Gangtser’ by Jeff Burns. Jeff was not a Hell’s Angel but had many friends in the organization. Most of the crap where people think that in American Outlaw Biker culture is the stuff spread by law enforcement especially the ATF undercover. Jeff talks a lot about how the undercover agents had to start the crimes themselves in order to get anything on individual Hell’s Angels and later a lot of the charges were reduced or dropped completely. I believe that it mostly comes down to a few bad apples in certain chapters that gives the rest the bad name at least in American Outlaw Motorcycle Culture. As for outside the U.S. some I hear are run like crime syndicates. I think it would be cool if you would have a sit down with George Christie so he can tell his version of being an outlaw biker. Thanks again for ALL of the content. God Bless You!

He had a beautiful daughter at the time she was 18, me and my young friends were barely 13-14 years at the time. We used to whistle at her every time she came out, with her dad or not. Let me just say, he wasn’t fucking around. I remember one time after a whistle, he got so mad he came to our door and said, whistle one more time and I’ll call 4 hells angels right now and terrorize this whole fucking neighborhood! We never whistled again. Didn’t know the magnitude of this guy at that age lol
