Hellebore Winter Care / Quick Tips / Homegrown Garden
The days may be short and the garden rather dull, but now is the time for the hellebores to shine! These winter/spring flowering perennials are a must for flower borders in a part shaded spot or under a tree.
In this video, as part of a new 'Quick Tips' playlist, you'll see how I prepare them for blooming and learn how to prevent black spot disease on your hellebores.

Thank you for the tip on black spot. I'm in a dryer climate and thought it was a sign of underwatering. Your soil looks much more humus than mine. Thanks for sharing this tip. My wife loves them and gets disappointed when they look so unhealthy.
Those hellebores are beautiful. The quick tips are a good idea 👍
Great! I hope you continue with your quick tips segments. Here, in mid-January, we're only growing snowmen with several feet of snow covering the ground. It's nice to see some real greenery and flower blooms at this time of year. Cheers!
Love Hellebores, thanks for sharing yours. We are presently buried in 10” of snow, so my hellebores are nestled in good for the winter. Thanks for sharing your garden. 👍❤️😊

Our winter just kicking in good now, I’ll see my hellebores come April.
You'll love Ashwood Nurseries. There's lots more than hellebores to tempt you. If you get chance to visit the garden that's a treat too. Enjoy.
Really helpful video, I've been puzzling over hellebores for a while as I've been hesitant to cut off all the leaves.
I don't have any garden of myown but I can hear you talkingabout your garden for ever. You are absolutely wonderful and it is a blessing just listen to you. Thank you for these positive and interesting videos. It is a real joy to watch them. 👍🏻😊🌹🌹🌹
I love that we begin to see colors in nature again! Can't wait for spring!
І квіти гарні і сама, як квіточка.Хай щастить!
The shorter format really works. Thank you. (I always postpone watching anything longer than 5 mins, then end up never watching!)

Super helpful, did not no to do that. Will get out and cut those leaves now. Mine’s got some beautiful big pink flowers on it already. Definitely brightening up my winter!
I love Hellebores, I have been collecting them in the sale 🌸💕🌸
lovely little video
Grose flowers are so beautiful! I planted some Holly hocks and they’re already coming up, so tall and beautiful. 🌸🌺
Brilliant vid. Some of my white helebores are already in flower and I was wondering if I needed to remove the leaves. Feels so drastic though, but you've shown what to do really clearly! Cheers!
Thank you for this! I’ve never grown hellebores before and put one in last year. My instinct was telling me to give it a hair cut as the leaves seemed to be suffocating it but I was nervous to do it. I’m going to crack on and give it a trim today!
Long or short, always great to see a new video!

Thanks for watching! I do hope you’ll find one 🌸
I didn't know they were related to anenomes but that makes sense bc I think anemomes are gorgeous too. I actually (usually) prefer single petals to doubles
Love Ashwood Nursery and they sell beautiful hellebores. It’s a regularly trip for me. John’s garden was on channel 5, Carol Klein visited it. There’s a lovely farm-shop near by too, Roberts Farm shop worth a pop in. I’m anxious about cutting all the leaves back I cut the large and unhealthy ones. I must try to be braver.
Looking Butifull
Very nice video 🙂 godbless
I could safe a lot of white hellebores from a flowershop ...havent been sold around Christmas. Are not in their prime ...but a few buds seem to appear ... I ve planted them around trees ...they don t like severe strong sunlight. Hopefully they become happy there ... Kind regards, Marcus

I share in your joy.
Can't grow these in Florida but if I did, I wouldn't ever cut the leaves off had I not seen this video. Thanks
I think I have that pink one. I love the leaves on it. Have you ever collected seeds from them. They are at least $25 here! I'll still buy one or two more this year though!
hi, im a new subscriber who wants to grow fruit and veg this year. i got some gardening tools for my christmas present. will you be recording a calander/schedule for planting fruit and veg throughout 2022? woiuld be cool to follow along at home with a schedule or something
Hi was wondering when do you cut the flower stems? Thanks x
They are just beautiful, I bought some seeds last summer. Your videos are never too long, I seen 4:55 and thought darn. How is that winter Clematis coming along.? Have a great week ahead.!

@@homegrowngarden ...great, I really do enjoy watching your videos. Look forward to seeing the Clematis when it's in bloom.
We have a hellebore with flowers that are almost black - don't know the variety. Didn't know to remove the blackened leaves - thought it just the ravages of winter. Ours is in a large pot. Do you know when I should feed it and what with? Happy gardening - spring on the horizon!
Thank you for this - only could you please specify what you mean by "this time of year"? I see video was uploaded in January, but should I use this as "fall prep" or "winter prep" - before or after first frost? Thank you!
Thanks for the great info! Question; can I put them in the ground now in January? (I live in zone 7B). I bought 2 potted hellebores and I have them outside in their pots.

Absolutely! Just don’t plant them on a day when the soil is frosty. 🥶
I really enjoy watching your program and progress on the garden. Do you have a patreon? Cheer ! Have a great day!

I noticed that Ashwood Nursery sell some of their own Hellebore hybrids as plug plant packs which seems like a bargain if you don't mind waiting a couple of seasons for them to bulk up plus you can't specify the colours. I'd love to have some in winter containers but the price of 2 or 3 litre plants in a garden centre is just too high for me.

I'm looking outside at today's snow storm and believe those colorful flowers would not stand a chance in this climate...😔 🇨🇦

Hellebores will start to go dormant in the summer months so there’s no maintenance required. Just make sure it’s kept watered in hot spells.

@@homegrowngarden Thank you so much
I want to add hellebore so bad!
Pink? I would say dark-red.. When you said: 'here we are allready', there stil was a leave there, rather black so it seems..
Hi
I despair at how the routine removal of Hellebore foliage has become received wisdom. I've seen too many weakened by this ghastly practice. The damage from leaf spot is over-stated and misunderstood. Consider this: you're removing the leaves from your plants annually, yet you're still seeing the leaf spotting. I've never removed the leaves from my hellebores and I have very many, and all are in the rudest of health. But don't take my word for it - try leaving them alone one year and see what happens.

The new leaves appear after the flowers in the spring so they aren’t leafless for long at all. It was the practice carried out at the hellebore nursery I visited quite recently where they breed and grow their own from seed. You do you and I’ll carry on as I do. They’re blooming their socks off now 🙂
I'm surprised by how mild your winter appears to be.

If you ever stopped smiling, I think it would send me into a deep depression
Don't compost them anywhere.
Thanks
