@Lordoftherobe that's not even close to "most". I think bellular referred to that list as the "incumbents", and I don't think you need to be a AAA title to succeed at the live service model. In fact having AAA budgets are more of a liability in live service than they are in GAP titles because you pay that penalty more in success than in failure. Since Sony doesn't publish many live services in such a crowded ecosystem, I'm waiting to see if they earn the negative "AAA" label that their budgets definitely justify.

TLDR: - No progression past purchasing all stratagem's + equipment & unlocks - Sony dumbassery with region locking steam players - No weapon customization / improvement system - Balanced weapons instead of power fantasy against hordes of enemies The ultimate irony is, if you spend money to buy any of the premium passes, you are ironically paying to lose because grinding premium credits in missions is the ONLY long term progression that really exists right now in game. You also have no guarantee the equipment you purchase will be balanced and fun anytime soon if it isn't immediately so.

Never thought about this, but 'concurrency' as a measure is an interesting phenomenon. It's easy to think that it's not the same as player counts. So you may think that it's related to game-hours.... but it's not even that. It's OVERLAPPING game-hours. 10 random people playing 6 hours a day have a high-chance of overlapping playtimes. The same 10 random people playing 2 hours a day have a MUCH less chance of over-lapping -- much less than even 66% less chance than before that the numbers might indicate. So, in that hypothetical scenario, you didn't change the player numbers at all. There's still 10 "players". You changed the game-hours they play by ~66%. But you changed the "concurrency" by something probably greater than ~85%. Note that I'm not saying there's not a huge reduction in ACTUAL players, just that different measures can imply very different things and "concurrency" is extraordinarily misleading.

This new system is so damn random and up to the game master you just feel annoyed. When the automotins came back in bulk after their defeat it was awsome to see their invation. Then we pushed the same few planets over and over again. Bugs have a similar problem events are aweome. Then it just dies down and becomes fight for this same planet over and over. How many major orders are the exact same thing on the same planet? Our enemies seem artificially limmited and obviusly are incabable of reaching super earth until the devs make it so. Bug players should have been able to kill them many months ago just with how many people were diving. And the bots should have been able to branch out into a real problem by now because the lack of divers keeping them in check. The first game you could actually lose the war. If one faction pushed hard they could threaten the whole game.

The balancing is STILL terrible, and the ONLY reason why recent buffs happened was because the moron in charge of balancing got overruled. Not to mention the pure bs on the war map that's happened the last two major orders, like several planets under 100% control turning to 100% bug overnight and planets that were mostly liberated suddenly went back to 0% that night. The program running the map needs to be tweaked fast, or people are going to start ignoring major orders and do what they want. It'll be funny if either the bugs or bots make it next to Super Earth to suddenly have their progress reset by the program since no one tried to stop them.

The main thing you have not covered is that the game design of Helldivers 2 is extremely shallow. The only longterm progression system in the game is upgrading your ship which only has a fixed number of upgrades, as a result a LOT of players have no reason to return. There is no gear progression, Destiny 2 has gear creep every season so there is a reason to return every season, same can be said for games like WOW and other small group MMOs. Even Warframe has gear creep every Update with a new playable Warframe as well as systems, Helldivers is extremely static with no long term progression.

This (on top of the fact that it's inherently deceptive) is why I hate game mechanics *designed to waste your time* purely for the purpose of inflating the game's "playtime" to appease some corporate clowns who don't know anything about designing a game, stretching existing content thinner and thinner with grindy meta progression and locking content into "season passes". Not only is it monotonous but it also kills the sense of progression, content pacing, and balance if done poorly. "Good" games don't have to 'trick' people into continuing to play them.

I've got 200 hours in Helldivers 2, and here's some thoughts. The game is still fun to play, the story is really good, but it's dripped out slowly. When I started playing it had a lot of "number go up" good endorphins, but the moment you've unlocked everything that kind of dies. The variety of gameplay in helldivers is quite narrow. There's a large range of missions, but they all feel like "go to the point, hit this sequence of arrows at a terminal, go to the next point" with occasional "fight a bunch of bugs while doing this" - but the fighting bugs is the same experience as just walking around, so a mission of "kill 400 bugs" doesn't feel different to a mission of "carry this hard drive over there and hit the button" - when you compare it to (say) Deep Rock Galactic, there just isn't as much variety there to keep it interesting. The game is still worth the cost of entry as long as you play it with friends,. You can get 50 hours of fun out of this easily. Not every game needs to be a perpetual live service slog. If you just compare it to regular non-live-service games, it's a reasonably good value prospect. If millions of players buy a game, play it for 50 hours and have fun, then move on, that should be considered a huge success. It's this AAA Forever-Game Live-Service mentality that brands it as a failure. You didn't make all the money in the universe? You didn't make as much money as Minecraft or Fortnite? FAILURE FAILURE FAILURE this game is a catastrophe, let's all point and laugh.

Way to many people are signing up for a multi-year commitments but don’t realize the game was initially fun because it was in a growth phase and when it becomes time for the developer to start putting in content at a sustainable pace and bringing in a sustainable amount of income things aren’t going to be like they were. What we really need a Peer to peer muli player game revolution. No more live services with developer babysitting. Epic doesn’t support unreal tournament '99 but you can still find a lobby to this day. The “new content” live services provide is never anywhere near what people’s expectations are.

I work in this industry and server counts are not Unique player account counts 6 million players could still be playing, but only for 10 minutes at a time instead of 2 hours, if they are not having fun they log off. Unique player counts across all play sessions in a day versus current server counts are completely different counts. Example: 24 players Each play 4 hours concurrently at different times gives you server counts of 4 each player overlaps with another set of players for 4 hours. Each play an hour on the server at diffrent times gives you server counts of 1 . Each player plays an ablut hour when free. Server counts through out the day can be as high as 24 throughout the day multiple times if they go for shorter sessions or longer ones but one hour could have as many as 24 players if they are all in game at the same time. All three of these examples are sample utilization patterns that show why just server counts dont explain player behaivor. The server counts are used for server load evaluations as a operational standard not for demographic analyisys as much due to lack of distinct counts of the universes population. Now servers do know unique counts of players and frequency of session and percentage of engagement. (how often we log in and what do we do when we log in) and that can drive your retention strategies.

The numbers are fine. A player base of 30-40k is pretty healthy. However, I believe the drop-off happened too soon, and the game should have maintained higher numbers for a bit longer, especially since it’s relatively new-barely 6 months old. Issues like poorly implemented nerfs, game breaking bugs, the Sony debacle, and Sony banning sales in 177 countries prematurely took their toll.

I feel like this is the narrative that has been lost in the sauce. I bought the game after they dropped the patch with some actual buffs in it. I think they'll figure this thing out in the end. Non-issue. The game has 40K players still. It was not a AAA title. They sold more than 8 million copies. This game succeeded whether people acknowledge it or not. People will come back whenever there is new content. This is not news worthy and the game media is trying to make it sound like it is. No game keeps 90% of its audience.

its just annoying to play, the most optimal way to play is not fight ad run away and the AT situation on the bug front is back to square one with the behemoth chargers. Buffing bot accuracy is also annoying when the gatling devastators already do lots of suppression. The game mandates movement but half the support weapons require you to stay still to reload.

Most of those upgrades are solid as well, like giving target priority to mortars is actually huge.
